Ukraine loses up to 49,800 servicemen since beginning of hostilities in Kursk direction

MOSCOW, January 7. /TASS/. The Armed Forces of Ukraine lost up to 49,830 servicemen during the hostilities in the Kursk direction, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

"In total, during the military operations in the Kursk direction, the enemy lost up to 49,830 servicemen, 293 tanks, 217 infantry fighting vehicles, 159 armored personnel carriers, 1,511 armored combat vehicles, 1,426 vehicles, 344 artillery pieces, 44 launchers of multiple launch rocket systems, including 13 HIMARS and 6 MLRS, 16 launchers of anti-aircraft missile systems, 8 transport and loading vehicles, 89 electronic warfare stations, 13 anti-battery radars, and 4 air defense radars," the ministry said.

Ukraine loses over 290 troops in Kursk Region over past day

MOSCOW, January 8. /TASS/. The Ukrainian armed forces have lost over 290 servicemen in the Kursk Region over the past day, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"Over the day, Kiev lost over 290 servicemen, a tank, an armored personnel carrier, four armored combat vehicles, four automobiles and three artillery pieces," the report says.

In addition, units of the Battlegroup North defeated formations of four mechanized brigades, a tank brigade, an airborne assault brigade, an assault brigade, two territorial defense brigades, an assault regiment, and a Ukrainian National Guard brigade near Viktorovka, Zazulevka, Kazachya Loknya, Kositsa, Kurilovka, Lebedevka, Loknya, Martynovka, Melovoy, Mirny, Russkoe Porechnoye, Sudzha, and Cherkasskoe Porechnoye.

The ministry also noted that strikes from operational-tactical aircraft and artillery fire targeted enemy manpower and equipment in the areas of Veselovka, Guyevo, Daryino, Nikolayevo-Daryino, Nikolayevka, Nikolsky, Novenkoye, Pogrebki, Sverdlikovo, Yuzhny, as well as Belovody, Vodolagi, and Zhuravka in the Sumy Region.

According to it, ukraine's overall losses in Kursk Region exceed 50,000 servicemen.

Russia’s Su-35S fighter hit stronghold of Ukrainian forces in Kursk region.

MOSCOW, January 8. /TASS/. A Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber, escorted by a Su-35S multirole fighter, hit a stronghold and manpower of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Kursk border area, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

"A Su-34 multirole supersonic fighter-bomber, escorted by a Su-35S fighter, took off from its base airfield and carried out a bombing strike on a stronghold and manpower of the Ukrainian armed forces," the report says.

As the ministry noted, the strike from the Su-34 was carried out using universal planning and correction modules.

"After completing the combat mission, the entire group successfully returned to the base airfield. According to the intelligence report, the targets were successfully hit," the Defense Ministry added.

MOSCOW, January 8. /TASS/. Eighteen Ukrainian servicemen have been taken prisoner west of the Kurakhovo settlement in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

"Units of the Battlegroup South have taken more favorable positions. They defeated the formations of two mechanized and an air mobile brigades of the Ukrainian army in the areas of Seversk, Belogorovka, Chasov Yar, Vasyukovka and Yantarnoye in the DPR. Three counterattacks by enemy assault groups were repulsed. Ukraine lost more than 280 servicemen; 18 soldiers of the 46th air mobile brigade were captured west of Kurakhovo," it said.

Russia’s army also destroyed a tank, an infantry fighting vehicle, a US-made M113 armored personnel carrier, seven pickup trucks, two artillery pieces and an ammunition depot.
 
Russian Firepower Decimates Ukrainian Airfields & Drone Facilities in Latest Strikes

Russian forces targeted Ukrainian military airfield infrastructure, as well as drone assembly and storage facilities, over the past 24 hours, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
"Using tactical aviation, strike drones, missile forces, and artillery, the Russian Armed Forces struck the infrastructure of military airfields, drone assembly and storage sites, and concentrations of personnel and equipment belonging to Ukrainian forces and foreign mercenaries in 147 locations," the ministry's statement read.
Additionally, Russian air defense systems intercepted six HIMARS rockets manufactured in the United States and shot down 105 fixed-wing drones.

Jim Rogers predicts Russian economic boom

Russia is headed for an economic boom once the Ukraine conflict is over, according to US investor and hedge fund manager Jim Rogers.

In an interview with RBK news outlet on Wednesday, Rogers said the resolution of the conflict would stabilize the geopolitical situation and positively impact Russian bonds, the ruble, and foreign investment.

Many non-Russian investors have seen their funds blocked due to Ukraine-related sanctions and Moscow’s countermeasures since early 2022.

In March, Russia launched an asset-swap scheme allowing Russian and foreign investors to exchange frozen Western securities for immobilized funds in Russia. Two rounds of the scheme freed some 10.64 billion rubles ($102 million) in foreign assets. However, Rogers, whose Russian portfolio includes shares in state airline Aeroflot, did not participate. He told RBK he wants to retain Russian assets and is looking forward to buying more as soon as non-residents get the opportunity to trade on the Russian market.

“I would be happy to buy more Aeroflot shares, I would be happy to buy Moscow Exchange shares, I would be happy to buy something if there is real peace,” he stated.

Rogers said the Russian market is currently unsuitable for most foreign investors due to conflict-related risks, including fears of asset confiscation. However, he predicted a drastic shift following a resolution, leading to a market boom, higher bond prices, and a stronger ruble.

“If the situation changes, perhaps I will be driven to pay more attention to bonds and the ruble,” Rogers said. He added that shares in the Moscow Exchange (MOEX) and stocks in travel and tourism could become significant beneficiaries once geopolitical tensions ease.

Rogers also linked his optimistic outlook to Donald Trump’s US presidential election victory. Trump has pledged to resolve the Ukraine conflict upon returning to the White House, and his incoming special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, recently expressed hopes for a resolution within 100 days of Trump’s inauguration on January 20. Rogers noted that Trump “really wants” to resolve the situation but cautioned that achieving peace will require negotiations with Moscow.

Russia has reiterated its openness to diplomacy while insisting that Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification must be part of any settlement. Moscow has also demanded that Ukraine cease military operations and acknowledge the “territorial reality” of its former regions that chose to join Russia.
