Russian artillery disrupts enemy rotation near Belogorovka in Lugansk region — expert

LUGANSK, January 10. /TASS/. Russian artillery men have disrupted a secret rotation attempt of Ukrainian troops near Belogorovka in the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), military expert Andrey Marochko told TASS.

"Objective control of the Belogorovka sector of the line of engagement showed an enemy group (nearly a company) moving toward the Ukrainian frontline positions. Judging from the nature of actions, gear and other data, it was established that Ukrainian militants were planning secret rotation maneuvers. The data was promptly sent to the command, and an artillery strike on the target was launched," he said.

The Russian artillery men wiped out part of the enemy group, Marochko specified. The surviving Ukrainian soldiers "fled in the opposite direction from the positions, without providing assistance to those wounded," as they also abandoned ammunition, grenade launchers and other property, he added.

US companies still paying billions in taxes to Russia – media

American corporations still active in Russia paid $1.2 billion in taxes to the Russian state in 2023, according to figures published by Newsweek on Saturday. More than 300 US firms are believed to still be operating in Russia.

The figures were provided to Newsweek by B4Ukraine, a Kiev-sponsored group of NGOs that has spent the last three years hounding Western companies to cut their ties with Moscow.

According to the group, the five companies that paid the most profit taxes to Russia in 2023 were tobacco company Philip Morris International ($220 million), beverage corporation PepsiCo ($135 million), confectionary company Mars ($99 million), health and hygiene consumer goods firm Procter & Gamble ($67 million), and confectionary company Mondelez.

American companies paid a total of $1.2 billion in taxes to the Russian state in 2023, up from $712 million in 2022, according to an earlier report compiled by B4Ukraine. Their contribution makes the US the largest source of foreign taxes paid in Russia.

It is “probable” that gas prices could rise by three or four cents a gallon, the outgoing US president has said
Biden admits Russia sanctions could hurt Americans

US President Joe Biden has admitted that the latest package of American sanctions targeting Russia’s oil industry could harm ordinary Americans, saying they may lead to a slight increase in gas prices.

On Friday, the US Treasury Department unveiled a “sweeping” round of sanctions on Russia, imposed in coordination with the UK. The measures target two major oil producers, Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz, as well as their subsidiaries and entities providing insurance and transportation services. Over 180 vessels allegedly used to transport Russian oil in defiance of Western restrictions, which the US has described as a ‘shadow fleet’, were also sanctioned.

Asked whether he is concerned that the sanctions could lead to gas prices going up, Biden said the possibility cannot be ruled out. “It is probable that gas prices could increase by as much as three or four cents a gallon, but the sanctions will have a more significant impact on Russia’s ability to continue its actions in the conduct of war,” he said.

“These restrictions will have a profound effect on the growth of Russia’s economy,” Biden argued, adding that the sanctions aim to hinder Moscow’s ability to finance its military operations.

The sanctions package arrives less than two weeks before the end of Biden’s term. President-elect Donald Trump has been critical of Biden’s approach to the Ukraine conflict and vowed to swiftly end the hostilities.
