Russian military reports new gains in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region
Moscow has also announced the liberation of another settlement in Donbass
The Russian military has seized two settlements in Kharkov Region and Donbass from Ukrainian forces, the Defense Ministry in Moscow announced on Wednesday.
Troops dislodged Ukrainian forces from the village of Kislovka, around 25km east of Kupiansk, a key Ukrainian logistics hub in the region, the ministry said. The announcement comes two days after the reported capture of the village of Kotlyarovka, immediately to the south of Kislovka.
The development apparently signals an intensification of combat on the Kharkov axis, where the front line – which approximately runs along the border between Ukraine’s Kharkov Region and Russia’s Lugansk People’s Republic – has remained largely static for months.
Russian troops have also liberated the village of Novokalinovo in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic, the ministry has claimed. The village is located just to the east of Ocheretino, a key railway hub in the area and an important stronghold due to its elevated position. Russian forces broke through Ukraine’s defensive lines near Ocheretino in late April, and the full liberation of the town was announced by the Defense Ministry on Sunday.

The fall of Ocheretino has apparently become a major issue for Ukraine’s forces stationed in the area, as it led to the loss of several villages around the town in a matter of a few days. In Ukraine, the Ocheretino defeat has been widely blamed on the 115th Mechanized Brigade, which reportedly abandoned its positions without orders to do so.
The Ukrainian command poured in reserves in an effort to wrestle it back, including the 47th Mechanized Brigade ‘Magura’, with Western-supplied armor, including US-made M1 Abrams tanks and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. However, the unit, which is portrayed in Ukraine as an elite force, has apparently failed to stabilize the situation.
Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has said Russian forces are in full control of the battlefield situation and are steadily advancing. Throughout April, Ukrainian forces lost around 1,000 soldiers per day on average, the minister said earlier this month, estimating Kiev’s military losses at 111,000 this year alone.

Lithuania is waiting for Kiev’s request to send in military trainers, the nation’s prime minister has said.
Lithuania is prepared to deploy soldiers on Ukrainian soil for a training mission, the country's prime minister Ingrida Simonyte told the Financial Times on Wednesday.
French President Emmanuel Macron floated the idea of having NATO boots on the ground in Ukraine in February, arguing that nothing should be excluded to prevent a Russian victory in the conflict. The Lithuanian government has similarly stated that there should be no red lines in efforts to aid Kiev.
Speaking to the British newspaper, Simonyte said she has parliamentary permission to deploy soldiers in Ukraine, but has not received a request from Kiev. NATO to rule out boots on ground in Ukraine – media
A policy statement is set to be issued after French President Emmanuel Macron refused to exclude potential deployments, according to Corriere della Sera.
NATO is set to formally oppose sending troops to the battlefield in the Ukraine conflict, echoing the long-standing US stance on the matter, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported on Sunday.
According to a draft policy document to be approved at the bloc’s summit in Washington in July, NATO would adhere to a “no boots on the ground” principle, which the Italian outlet described as “one of the key phrases” in the paper.
However, the US-led military bloc is also preparing to make changes, the newspaper noted. Western efforts to support Ukraine that are currently being spearheaded by the so-called Ramstein Group led by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will reportedly be redelegated to NATO headquarters in Brussels. The move stems from the fact that the lion’s share of Ukraine aid is being provided by NATO members, Corriere della Sera explained.
The newspaper also reported that NATO would continue to strengthen its military footprint in Eastern Europe and the Baltic states, with plans to bring the bloc’s combined combat strength in the area to 300,000 troops.

Greek PM was asked whether S-300 or Patriot battery could be provided to Ukraine. Mitsotakis replied that the Patriot battery is in Saudi Arabia for geopolitical reasons, because Greece wants to be present in the region, where there is also a lot of unrest.
"As you know, we have also sent a frigate to the Red Sea because we are interested in freedom of navigation for many, I think, understandable reasons. But with one difference: the Patriot battery from Saudi Arabia can return to Greece within a few days, and if you transfer a battery to Ukraine, it is not sent back. So for us there is no question of sending Patriot and S-300," Mitsotakis said.
