Ukrainian drones attacked several military facilities in Russia and occupied Crimea overnight on May 17, a source from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) confirmed to the Kyiv Independent.

The source said that it was a joint operation carried out by the SBU and Ukraine's military intelligence agency.

"Today's operation proved that the Russians are unable to protect their main naval bases in Sevastopol and Novorossiysk," the source said.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed earlier during the day that 102 aerial and six naval drones had been intercepted and destroyed and did not report any damage or casualties.

The drones were targeted at naval bases of the Black Sea Fleet located in occupied Sevastopol and the Russian city of Novorossiysk in Krasnodar Krai, the source said. The attack also impacted a power plant near Sevastopol, leading to power outages.

The port in Novorossiysk is where Moscow began redeploying its Black Sea Fleet after a series of devastating Ukrainian strikes, including a missile attack on its headquarters in Sevastopol on Sept. 22, 2023.

The source also confirmed the drone attack on the oil refinery in the Russian town of Tuapse, located on Russia's Black Sea coast.

A military intelligence source confirmed earlier for the Kyiv Independent that the agency carried out a successful drone attack against an oil base in Russia's Rostov Oblast on May 15.

The next day, drones hit production facilities of the state-owned Russian weapons manufacturing company "Basalt" in the city of Tula, a military intelligence source told the Kyiv Independent.

Ukraine ikaenda kujifua Ulaya ikafanya mageuzi makubwa sana kuanzia maofisa, sare, training, silaha, utoaji wa vyeo na kuondoa Soviet mentality. Ndio maana maofisa wa Ukraine wengi ni miaka 40 na 50 katikati hapo. Ikaja vita ya 2022 Ukraine ikawa tofauti kabisa na ilivyotarajiwa.

So far haya mageuzi yanaenda kuipa nguvu mpya Urusi. Hata hivyo Shoigu na Gerasimov hawajafanya vibaya, ila kazi kubwa naona imefanywa na Russian Central Bank na wizara ya uchumi, uzuri kule hakuna chawa wewe kama hujui hupewi cheo. Ukraine asks US to help locate targets in Russia – media
Ukrainian lawmakers are also pushing for the use of US weapons in cross-border strikes, the New York Times said

Kiev has urged Washington to provide intelligence on targets on Russian soil, as the Ukrainian Armed Forces lose ground on the battlefield, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, saying US administration officials have begun “to review” the request.

In addition, members of Ukraine's parliament have approached lawmakers in Washington, requesting the green light to use US-provided weapons in strikes on Russia, the paper wrote, citing US and Ukrainian officials.

The Russian offensive in Kharkov Region was facilitated by the US restrictions, which are “handcuffing the Ukrainian war effort,” Kiev’s delegation told Congress, according to news website Politico.

Despite such requests being turned down in the past, administration officials are now reviewing the latest requests, the NYT wrote.

Intelligence from the US and other allies on military targets on Russian soil would allow Ukraine to better plot approach routes for its drones and missiles, the newspaper said. With detailed terrain mapping, it would allow them to fly low and avoid radar detection, increasing their effectiveness. While Kiev already has access to commercial satellite imaging data, US intelligence would provide more detailed and timely information, they wrote.
