Exclusive: Top Ukrainian pilot killed when US-made F-16 fighter jet crashed​


A top Ukrainian pilot was killed when a US-made F-16 fighter jet crashed on Monday, just weeks after the long-awaited planes arrived in the country, a Ukrainian military source told CNN.


Pilot Oleksiy Mes, known as “Moonfish,” was killed in the crash while “repelling the biggest ever aerial attack” by Russia against Ukraine, said the source, adding that the pilot was buried on Thursday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that the Ukrainian Air Force used the F-16 to destroy missiles and drones launched by Russia on Monday, the first time any Ukrainian official confirmed the jets were being used in combat.

FACTBOX: Talks out of question: situation in Kursk Region

MOSCOW, August 29. /TASS/. The Ukrainian armed forces have lost more than 400 military personnel and 29 armored vehicles in the Kursk direction over the past day. In total, the enemy has lost up to 7,450 servicemen since fighting began in the region, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

- Russian jets struck Ukrainian reserves in 11 settlements of the Sumy Region, including in Sumy.

Ukraine's losses
- Over the day, the enemy lost more than 400 servicemen and 29 armored vehicles, including an infantry fighting vehicle, an armored personnel carrier, 27 armored combat vehicles, as well as an artillery gun, an MLRS launcher, a mortar and 17 vehicles.

- Since the beginning of hostilities, Ukraine's losses have amounted to up to 7,450 servicemen, 74 tanks, 36 infantry fighting vehicles, 64 armored personnel carriers, 486 armored combat vehicles, 227 vehicles, 52 artillery pieces, 15 multiple rocket launchers, including four HIMARS and one MLRS, as well as five anti-aircraft missile systems. In addition, 10 electronic warfare stations, two counter-battery radars, an air defense radar, five pieces of engineering equipment, including two engineering demolition vehicles and one UR-77 mine-clearing vehicle, were destroyed.

The enemy surrenders
- According to the Russian Defense Ministry, five Ukrainian servicemen have surrendered.


Alaudinov's statements
- The Ukrainian armed forces units are building up their defenses at a number of sites in the Kursk Region and are entrenching themselves, Deputy Chief of the Russian Armed Forces’ Main Military-Political Department, Akhmat Special Forces Commander Major General Apty Alaudinov told TASS.

MOSCOW, August 29. /TASS/. The current situation is most difficult for the Ukrainian army in the Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk) area on the Kiev-controlled territory of the DPR, Commander-in-Chief Alexander Syrsky has said.

"I’ve worked for several days in a row in brigades <...> in the Pokrovsk area, where the situation is most difficult," he wrote on his Facebook page (banned in Russia; owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist in Russia). In these conditions, he said, "non-standard decisions have to be made now and then."

Today, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said he had held a meeting with Syrsky and General Staff Chief Anatoly Bargilevich to discuss the situation on the frontline, with special attention paid to Krasnoarmeysk and Dzerzhinsk (Ukrainian name - Toretsk).

Over the past week, the Krasnoarmeysk area has often been mentioned in a negative context in Ukraine. The General Staff reported a tense situation there. Zelensky said after a meeting at the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s office said that it had been decided to send reinforcements to the area. Verkhovna Rada member Alexey Goncharenko (listed as a terrorist and extremist in Russia) said the situation near Krasnoarmeysk was close to disaster and speculated that the Ukrainian military had no plans for defense in that area.

On August 28, a military source in the DPR told TASS that the Ukrainian troops in the community of Grodovka near Krasnoarmeysk had been encircled.

Urusi akimaliza chukua hichi kipande, ni kweli malengo ya SMO yatakuwa yametimia ila hawezi kukaa kwenye mazungumzo, lazima ataendelea kupambana ili atengeneze buffer zone kwenye haya maeneo ili kuzuia Ukraine kuingia umo au kurusha makombora, kwa maneno mengine Mrusi ataongeza mipaka kuingia ndani zaidi mwa Ukraine ili kujilinda, usisahau kuna Odessa bado ambayo kila siku inashambulia Crimea, Mrusi hawezi kukaa chini mpaka awe na uhakika na hizi sehemu hatarishi zote kazichukua, ili hata Ukrain akija vunja makubaliano tena baadae basi Mrusi anakuwa yupo kwenye sehemu nzuri ya kujilinda kwa chochote tofauti na sasa.
