Kiev’s setbacks on the frontline are causing Western backers to change their position on how the conflict between Russia and Ukraine should be resolved, Le Figaro has reported, citing multiple sources.
After 30 months of fighting, the idea of a negotiated settlement is being “discreetly” discussed in the US, EU and even in Ukraine, the French newspaper said in an article on Monday.
Russian forces are “slowly but steadily” advancing in Donbass, approaching the strategic town of Pokrovsk, the outlet noted. “In the West, it is increasingly openly acknowledged that Donbass and Crimea are beyond the military reach of the Ukrainians,” it added.
Kiev’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region may have achieved its political objectives, but, contrary to Ukraine’s hopes, did not lead to Moscow withdrawing forces from other parts of the frontline, Le Figaro stressed.

Russian paratroopers have ambushed Kiev’s forces in Russia’s Kursk Region, eliminating Ukrainian personnel together with several units of hardware, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said. It also published a video of the operation.
Russian airborne forces are working to dislodge the Ukrainian military from Kursk Region, where a cross-border incursion has been underway since early August, the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
In an area near the border with Ukraine, “the timely detection of the enemy and rapid response by the paratroopers allowed to swiftly destroy the opponent’s personnel and armored vehicles,” the statement read.
An ambush was set up on a road, and the “confident actions” of the Russian drone operators led to the elimination of “a Ukrainian all-terrain vehicle with its crew, an infantry fighting vehicle, and a Western-made armored car,” it said.
According to the ministry, a Ukrainian-operated APC was also taken out, and the personnel traveling inside it were later killed by paratroopers in a gunfight.
In addition, and anti-tank missile system crew blew up a Ukrainian truck, which had been used to supply ammunition to the contact line. The missile directly hit the cargo, causing a major explosion that obliterated the vehicle together with the driver and an accompanying soldier.

Latvia’s Air Force allegedly dispatched a group of NATO fighter jets to its border with Belarus to investigate an unidentified flying object which turned out to be a flock of birds, according to media reports.
The Baltic state’s Defense Ministry released a statement on Tuesday stating that in the early hours of September 17, the Air Force detected an “unrecognizable flying object” that had approached the Latvian-Belarusian border and crossed it in the vicinity of Kraslava district.
In response, the ministry said that warplanes of the NATO Airspace Patrol Mission took off and were sent to intercept the object. After failing to find anything suspicious, the fighters returned to base.
However, later in the day, LETA news agency reported that airspace monitoring devices had identified the “unrecognizable flying object” as a flock of birds. The precise species has not been specified.
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has nevertheless reiterated that the public must be informed when unidentified objects approach the country’s borders, while Defense Minister Andris Spruds noted that the fighter jets were airborne because it was initially impossible to determine what the “object” was.
