Russian army takes operational control of all roads to DPR's Kurakhovo — official

DONETSK, October 4. /TASS/. All roads leading to the Ukrainian-controlled Kurakhovo in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) have been taken under operational control by Russian forces after the liberation of Ugledar, DPR head Denis Pushilin said at a meeting with foreign reporters in Donetsk.

"Ukraine lost an important logistical hub [Ugledar], or link, which is now under the operational and visual control of our units, along with all the roads leading to Kurakhovo," Pushilin said.

He added that Ugledar was the only major town in the South Donetsk direction. Its location on elevated terrain allowed the enemy to observe the surrounding area for dozens of kilometers, making it a key logistics center for Ukrainian forces. "Our units now have operational space to advance further. Only small settlements lie ahead," the DPR head explained.

Kiev may have to accept loss of territory – Stoltenberg

Ukraine could sacrifice some land in favor of ending the conflict, the former NATO chief said

Ukraine may have to recognize the loss of some of its territory to Russia in favor of achieving peace and security guarantees, Jens Stoltenberg said in his first long interview after stepping down as NATO secretary general.

Stoltenberg ended his 10-year tenure as the chief of the US-led alliance on October 1. In a conversation with the Financial Times published on Friday, he said that Kiev may be forced to rethink seeing the restoration of the 1991 borders as a prerequisite for any peace deal.

Stoltenberg suggested that “a kind of new momentum” would come after the US presidential election in early November, possibly ushering in “ways to try to get movement on the battlefield combined with movement around the negotiating table.”

The West should “make the conditions” that would enable Ukraine to “sit down with the Russians and get something which is acceptable . . . something where they survive as an independent nation.”

Asked what he would propose to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, the former NATO chief offered a comparison to the resolution of the Soviet-Finnish war nearly 85 years ago.

“Finland fought a brave war against the Soviet Union in ‘39. They imposed much bigger costs on the Red Army than expected,” he said. “The war ended with them giving up 10% of the territory. But they got a secure border.”

Stoltenberg argued that Ukraine could obtain security guarantees from NATO even “if there is a line that is not necessarily the internationally recognized border.” He noted that the US defense pact with Japan does not cover Tokyo’s claim on the Kuril Islands, which are part of Russia, and that West Germany was admitted to NATO despite the fact that East Germany was controlled at the time by a separate, Soviet-aligned government.

“When there is a will, there are ways to find the solution. But you need a line which defines where Article 5 is invoked, and Ukraine has to control all the territory until that border,” Stoltenberg said, referring to the section of the NATO treaty, which outlines the duty of member states to defend each other.

Russia has repeatedly said that it would not accept Zelensky’s 10-point “peace formula” and not relinquish control over Crimea and four other regions, which Kiev and its backers continue to view as Ukrainian territory under illegal occupation.

Kiev’s hopes of imposing its terms appear more distant after the failed 2023 counteroffensive and Russia’s new victories in the Donbass, where Moscow’s troops have been making steady progress throughout 2024. During its renewed advances, the Russian army pushed the Ukrainians out of several heavily fortified towns, including Avdeevka, which fell in February, and Ugledar, which was captured earlier this week.

Ukraine Lost 115 Servicemen in Volchansk, Liptsy Areas – MoD

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Ukrainian troops in the Liptsy and Volchansk areas lost up to 115 servicemen as a result of the defeat inflicted by Russia's Battlegroup Sever, the group's spokesman Yaroslav Yakimkin told Sputnik.
"The Armed Forces of Ukraine lost up to 115 servicemen, an armored combat vehicle, three cars and a 122-mm D-30 howitzer," Yakimkin said.
He said Russian units defeated the formations of the 57th motorized infantry, 92nd airborne assault brigades, as well as the 129th territorial defense brigade

Russia ‘Moving Like a Steamroller’ Through Ukraine-Controlled Territory as US Support Dries Up
05.10.2024

Moscow is now advancing at its fastest rate in over two years, according to observers – the result of Russia’s commitment to its war of attrition and Ukrainian losses recently suffered during its ill-fated operation in the Kursk region.
Moscow continues to steadily advance through Ukraine-controlled territory as the United States turns its attention towards the Middle East, notes independent journalist Sarah Bils.
The US Navy veteran and co-founder of DD Geopolitics joined Sputnik’s The Backstory program this week as reports emerged that Russia had liberated the coal mining town of Ugledar in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). Russian officials confirmed the development Thursday after the Ukrainian military claimed it was withdrawing from the city after a week of heavy fighting.
Located at an elevation of 614 feet, Ugledar is a strategic link between southern and eastern fronts in the conflict and a crucial supply hub. Russia’s control of the settlement marks a major step towards the complete liberation of the DPR, also allowing it to protect a nearby rail line running from Crimea to the Donbass region. Ukraine had previously launched attacks on Russian supply lines from the city, which claimed a population of about 14,000 in 2022.
“The interesting thing about Ugledar is.. that there's nothing behind Ugledar. There's no fortifications behind Ugledar,” noted Bils. “So what the [Russian] troops can now do is sweep to the west and then come up from the south and hit up Kurakhovo, which is not fortified on the south side. So allegedly the Ukrainians will likely have to retreat again, and that will be from Kurakhovo.”

“The situation is looking like it's kind of panning out to be a lot like at Avdeyevka where the front collapses, the city falls, and then there's no reserves behind it and people are just running,” she continued. “The retreat is actually quite ugly right now.”
