Climate change refers to changes in the weather patterns of a specific area, which include rising temperatures, droughts, increased flooding, and shifting rainfall periods.

Climate change has become a global challenge, caused primarily by the increase in greenhouse gases and excessive deforestation.

In our country, climate change has had significant impacts. As witnessed this year, we have experienced heavy rainfall leading to floods in many areas of the country, resulting in the loss of lives, destruction of property, infrastructure, and crops in various regions.

Thus, due to the impacts of climate change, the government must seek solutions to address these changes. In the fight against climate change, I have proposed three key suggestions to the government that can help in tackling this challenge in our country:

1. Promotion of Tree Planting Nationwide

This is one of the important strategies and plans that can assist in mitigating the effects of climate change. Public education about the importance of trees and the environment is crucial in raising awareness about climate change. Therefore, education for the community should be delivered through various means, including:

Awareness Campaigns: Government and non-governmental organizations should jointly conduct nationwide training campaigns on the benefits of trees and forests. This will help greatly in increasing awareness of the relationship between trees and the environment, creating a community ready to protect and value tree planting for the benefit of society and the nation.

Community Training via Media: Media outlets such as television, radio, and social media should also be involved in providing educational programs about environmental issues and the value of tree conservation in addressing climate change.

2. Effective Management and Implementation of Forest Policy and Laws

Despite the existence of policies promoting tree planting and forest conservation in the country, deforestation remains significant, driven by various reasons, such as corruption by forest management officials, and the shortage of staff and workers to protect and grow forest resources. Therefore, I urge the government, based on the National Forest Policy of 1998 and the 2002 policy, to improve the implementation of these policies by increasing the workforce in the forestry sector, which covers more than 50% of the country’s land area. Additionally, the government should ensure strict supervision to combat corruption related to forest resources. This will enable better forest management to combat climate change.

3. Promotion of Alternative Energy Use

According to statistics from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, approximately 469,000 hectares are lost annually due to deforestation for various uses, including the collection of firewood and charcoal. Therefore, the government must implement strategies to combat this situation. Forests are vital for the survival of living organisms as they absorb pollutants, aid in rain formation by increasing humidity, and provide clean air for animals and birds.

Our country faces a significant challenge with the destruction of forests, largely because many Tanzanians rely on charcoal and firewood as their primary source of energy.

Thus, to combat this issue, the government must implement long-term plans to promote the use of natural gas as an alternative energy source to address this climate threat. I would like to propose three main suggestions to the government to promote the use of natural gas energy in the country:

First, the government, in collaboration with NGOs, development partners, and the media, must lay a solid foundation for environmental education about climate change and the importance of alternative energy sources, such as natural gas, in protecting the environment and health. Education has been provided, but mostly in urban areas, while significant usage of firewood and charcoal occurs in rural areas.

Second, after providing community education about the negative impacts of non-renewable energy, the government should take steps to create favorable conditions for the guaranteed and affordable access to natural gas energy for people across the country, as an alternative to wood and charcoal.

Due to the large population of the country, the natural gas market will likely be large and profitable, contributing significantly to the national economy. Therefore, the government must improve infrastructure for roads and electricity, and promote investment opportunities for organizations, institutions, and companies both locally and internationally to invest in the production, processing, and distribution of natural gas to reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal.

Third, the government must establish a sound policy to promote the use of natural gas in the country. Additionally, the government should enact laws to ensure the effective implementation of this policy, including regulations on the sale of affordable natural gas according to the economic status of both urban and rural citizens. A lower price will encourage more people to switch from using firewood and charcoal as their primary energy source. The government should also be vigilant against companies that may violate this law. This will ensure the success of this policy and promote the growth of natural gas usage in the country, helping to fight climate change.
