Sorry for not writing in Swahili. Since there’s a risk nobody will read, it’s too much time and effort, and I have problems making myself understood even in English.
Lots of confusion in this post. You don’t need any special “contract” to commit the crimes that are being committed in Loliondo. A wealthy “investor” - and this one is specially influential - with a regular hunting block (licence to hunt) is quite enough. There was a special irregular contract signed in 1992 that was revoked after the Loliondogate scandal erupted, but OBC have continued through all these years, and got significantly worse.
There isn’t any monitoring, in Loliondo or elsewhere, and hunting regulations can be violated. However, since the 1990s nobody has provided any evidence. This is both because there isn’t any monitoring and because nobody has made any real effort beyond asking questions in social media. There is also a possibility that no live animals have been flown out.
Of course, there’s an airfield, there are several in Loliondo, but OBC have their own. This can be googled in seconds, and the start of the clip with Kinana is from that airfield.
There used to be an Etisalat message when OBC had guests and you switched on your phone within a 20 km radius of their camp. Some say this is still the case.
Though the real and very serious crime is against land rights and human rights, and this is VERY well documented. There were many years of lobbying by the investor OBC that organize hunting for Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai to have their core hunting area of 1,500km2 of registered village and important grazing land for the Maasai turned into a protected area. This led to a local police state, several mass arson operations, “arrests” for the sake of intimidation, and a most brutal and lawless land theft in 2022.
In June 2022 and ongoing, Loliondo was brutally and lawlessly attacked by security forces, demarcating and then evicting everyone from a fake and illegal 1,500km2 “game reserve” (that was illegally gazetted months later as "Pololeti Game Reserve"). All councillors from affected wards were abducted and locked up for over 5 months, there were shootings, beatings, slashings with bayonets, rape, theft of motorbikes and telephones, destruction of houses, illegal arrests and trumped up charges, even shooting of cows, thousands fled to Kenya, everyone was supposed to squeeze into residential and agricultural areas with very insufficient grazing areas left, having to enter their own land as thieves at night for grazing, seizing and huge “fines” (extortion) on livestock that continue.
The government can get rid of OBC and return to land to the Maasai tomorrow. There isn’t any “mystery” in this. There’s just greed, selfishness, cruelty, anti-pastoralism, tourism cult, and support from unethical donors like the Germans.
