FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR NATURAL GAS PIPELINE, TANZANIA AND KENYA
Map showing alternative routes for the gas pipeline from Dar es Salaam to Tanga in Tanzania and Mombasa in Kenya
A natural gas pipeline is set to be extended from Dar es Salaam to Tanga in Tanzania and Mombasa in Kenya. COWI has determined the social and environmental viability of the project.
With the intend of increasing trade, the Kenyan and Tanzanian governments wish to construct a 530 kilometres long natural gas pipeline from Dar es Salaam to Tanga in Tanzania and Mombasa in Kenya. The proposed gas pipeline will include gas skid supply terminals in Tanga and Mombasa.
Planning for environment and society
COWI's work on the project involved field work, public consultations with local authorities and a socio-economic survey for communities living along the project area.
Other activities undertaken by COWI included preparation of an environmental and social management plan, an environmental and social monitoring plan and a resettlement action plan (RAP) framework.
Social and economic impacts
The study carried out by COWI includes route selection, technical and economic feasibility as well as financial modelling and environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA).
COWI collected and analysed local data and carried out client liaison, field investigations and surveys to determine realistic alignment options. Cost estimates, outline ESIA and required mitigation measures of identified route alternatives to establish the optimal route were also carried out by COWI.
The study also comprises the identification and scoping of resettlement issues with analysis of population density, existing land use along the line route and socio-economic analysis of the impacted population.
