President’s Samia Suluhu Hassan’s maiden speech at the United Nations General Assembly (Unga), has been mentioned among the seven most important during the session.

On September 23,

President Samia Suluhu Hassan addressed Unga’s 76th session in New York, USA this week.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s speech has been selected by American website ‘Foreign Policy (FP)’ among the most important addresses at the assembly and the only one from a female head of state.

Samia becomes one of the few female heads of State from Africa to address the UN General Assembly.

Other head of the whose Unga speeches have been highlited as important includes: the U.S. President Joe Biden, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

In their publication, Foreign Policy asked several of their columnists and contributors to weigh in on the speeches they found most compelling or most concerning.

When President Samia finally took the stage to deliver her speech at the Unga, she presented a distinctive contrast to the endless stream of all-male speakers who had preceded her to the podium on the third day of the General Debate.

In her maiden speech, Samia repeatedly praised multilateralism and the United Nations system. She noted her nation’s dependency on technical and financial support from external sources and admonished that “multilateralism cannot and should not succumb to the virus.”

She decried the COVID-19 vaccine inequality, noting that high and middle-income countries were now giving booster vaccinations while developing countries such as Tanzania had barely inoculated even 2 percent of its population.

“The level of vaccine inequity that we see is appalling.It is truly disheartening to see that most of the countries have inoculated less than 2 per cent of the populace and thus need to seek more vaccines for our people,”

“With the current pace, it is less likely that we will meet the WHO threshold of vaccinating at least 40 percent of people in every country by end of 2021, and at least 70 percent by the first half of 2022,” she said.

President Samia also spoke at length on gender equality, a cause she avidly advocates.

“As the first female president in the history of my country, the burden of expectation to deliver gender equality is heavier on my shoulders. Being passionate about gender equality is not sufficient and as such, my government is reviewing policy and legal frameworks in order to come up with actionable and measurable plans to ensure economic empowerment of women and other aspects pertaining to gender equality and gender parity,” she noted.

President Samia pointedly noted that ‘COVID-19 is threatening to roll back the gains made’ in gender equity and said she plans to implement policies aimed at female economic development and political and social advancement.

She assured the Assembly of Tanzania's commitment to remain a formidable member of the United Nations and a dependable supporter of multilateralism.

Other female presidents
Although most African countries joined the UN in the 1960s soon after they attained independence, with a few joining earlier than that or later, it wasn’t until 2006 that the first African female Head of State, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, addressed the UN General Assembly.

Currently, the 54 African member states of the UN make up to 28 percent of its overall membership. Before 2006, only male heads of State and governments had addressed the General Assembly.

Other African female heads of State that followed were Joyce Hilda Banda of Malawi in 2012, Catherine Samba-Panza of the Central African Republic in 2014, and most recently, Sahle-Work Zewde of Ethiopia in 2019.

South African Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) has just released its list of top 10 investment attractive countries in Africa, aimed at investors targeting real assets in an economy or looking to expand businesses that rely on physical infrastructure.

According to the author, RMB Africa Economist Daniel Kavishe, a new world called for a new approach to the publication, and this year’s report assesses the extent of the pandemic’s impact by sketching the landscape of the continent pre-COVID-19 and then painting a picture of both its actual and potential outcomes through and post-pandemic.
Historically, investment destinations in Africa have been ranked based on the tenets of economic activity and business operating environment. However, this year’s approach required an extra layer of sophistication, taking into account key factors such as the operating environments, fiscal scores and development plans, all of which are key to investment attractiveness in a Covid world.
“We created a new set of rankings that incorporated some of the unavoidable COVID-19-induced challenges, of which the operating environment score was one,” Kavishe said.
She added that a fiscal score was also part of the methodology, and this was essential because fiscal scores are important indicators of how governments respond to COVID-19.
“Although the pandemic brought much devastation, it also enabled opportunities for reimagining policies and trade relationships. Increasingly clear now is that home-grown strategies to tackle poverty, inequality and unemployment across Africa must be implemented. If not, all of Africa suffers,” Kavishe noted, adding that capital will flow naturally to economies offering a good mix of opportunity and ease of doing business.

Here are the top 10 investment attractive countries in Africa in 2021, according to RMB​

  1. Egypt: While Egypt’s economy was hard hit by the pandemic, it was also one of the first to bounce back to a path of growth. This, owing to the swift measures it introduced and the fact that it been on a stronger footing at the outbreak of COVID-19.​
  2. Morocco: The economy of Morocco continues to benefit from political stability. A special fund to combat COVID-19 was established in 2020, representing 2.7% of GDP. Two-thirds of the funds were to be provided by private sources and one third by the government.​
  3. South Africa: The southern-most country in Africa offers a strong manufacturing and retail base that will continue to support southern African regional economies with goods and services.​
  4. Rwanda: Rwanda continues to benefit from the efforts it has made to improve its operating environment. Furthermore, as part of the National Strategy for Transformation (NST), various investments should support the construction and energy sectors over the next few years.​
  5. Botswana: The country has high foreign exchange reserves, which have enabled it to weather the pandemic-induced economic storm better than most. The Pula Fund, a sovereign fund created in 1994 that finances a large part of the budget deficit, has meant that fiscal dependency on debt has been low.​
  6. Ghana: Ghana entered the current crisis on a relatively stronger footing than its African peers. Structurally, its economy has seen major shifts over the past few years, positioning it for significant growth going forward. This is supported by primary-sector industries like oil and gold and accelerated development in the tertiary sector.​
  7. Mauritius: Aided by an extremely favourable tax regime, its financial sector will remain one of the main drivers of Mauritius’ economy into the future – notably through cross-border investment activities and banking services.​
  8. Côte d’Ivoire (CIV): A rise in private investment should continue to fuel construction, agri-industry and services (trade, transport and ICT in particular). Private investment will benefit from the impetus provided by public investment under the 2016-20 National Development Plan.​
  9. Kenya: According to RMB, the Kenyan government’s efforts to ensure that implementation of the “Big Four” plan focused on industrialisation, universal health coverage, food security and affordable housing will invariably lead to fast economic growth.​
  10. Tanzania: Tanzania has been on a rapid path of development over the past few years. This growth can be attributed to consistent public investment from the government in key secondary and tertiary sectors, ranging from the energy sector to advancements in the telecommunications and finance sectors.​

  4. Rwanda: Rwanda continues to benefit from the efforts it has made to improve its operating environment. Furthermore, as part of the National Strategy for Transformation (NST), various investments should support the construction and energy sectors over the next few years.​
  5. Botswana: The country has high foreign exchange reserves, which have enabled it to weather the pandemic-induced economic storm better than most. The Pula Fund, a sovereign fund created in 1994 that finances a large part of the budget deficit, has meant that fiscal dependency on debt has been low.​
  6. Ghana: Ghana entered the current crisis on a relatively stronger footing than its African peers. Structurally, its economy has seen major shifts over the past few years, positioning it for significant growth going forward. This is supported by primary-sector industries like oil and gold and accelerated development in the tertiary sector.​
  7. Mauritius: Aided by an extremely favourable tax regime, its financial sector will remain one of the main drivers of Mauritius’ economy into the future – notably through cross-border investment activities and banking services.​
  8. Côte d’Ivoire (CIV): A rise in private investment should continue to fuel construction, agri-industry and services (trade, transport and ICT in particular). Private investment will benefit from the impetus provided by public investment under the 2016-20 National Development Plan.​
  9. Kenya: According to RMB, the Kenyan government’s efforts to ensure that implementation of the “Big Four” plan focused on industrialisation, universal health coverage, food security and affordable housing will invariably lead to fast economic growth.​
  10. Tanzania: Tanzania has been on a rapid path of development over the past few years. This growth can be attributed to consistent public investment from the government in key secondary and tertiary sectors, ranging from the energy sector to advancements in the telecommunications and finance sectors.​

IMF tayari imeisaidia Tanzania mkopo wenye masharti nafuu kiasi cha Tshs 1.3trl kwaajili ya kusisimua Uchumi wake uliodorora kwasababu ya covod-19 kwani niukweli usiopingika Tanzania tumeumizwa zaidi kwenye Sekta za Utalii,biashara na Usafirishaji,

Rais Samia Suluhu Hassan kwa kutumia pesa hizo na baada ya kutoa madarasa ya kisasa elfu 15 sawa na wastani wa madarasa manne kwenye kila shule ya Sekondari ya Serikali nchi nzima huku kipaumbele kikiwa ni shule zenye upungufu wa madarasa lakini furaha iliyoje Rais wetu ametoa tena jumla ya madawati 462,795 ambayo ni sawa na Wastani wa madawati 120 kwenye kila Shule ya Sekondari nchi nzima ambazo jumla ya shule hizo ni 3,863.

Sababu za Rais Samia Suluhu Hassan kutoa madarasa mapya manne ya kisasa na madawati mapya 120 katika kila shule ya Sekondari ya Serikali nchi nzima ni kuhakikisha wazazi wa watoto watakaojiunga na kidato cha kwanza mwakani katika mwaka wa masomo 2021|2025 hawalipi hata Shilingia mia moja kwani Rais wetu mnyenyekevu ameshalipa pia ada za watoto wote 1M wanaotakiwa kuanza shule siku moja nchi nzima yaani trh 06|01|2022,hii haijawahi kutokea katika historia ya nchi yetu,
