Tanzanian engineers shine in EAC region

Kenya has soooo many engineers, our board has just refused to sign them up...so the data available may be misleading on the clarity of the numbers of the personnel.

the problem of fewer registered engineers in kenya is a kenyan problem, not because there are few engineers in Kenya but because of problems to do with EBK, they are too stiff for reasons unknown, they act as if we in europe when we in kenya... apparently they have rejected more engineers than they have accepted, ... But once ERB problems are solved then alot more engineers would be properly registered

anyway, mi nilifikiri nikija hapa nitaona Tz engineers have won achievments in some innovation, or they have been ranked high in skill... kumbe mnatuambia tu ni wengi waliosajiliwa???? po! haya shinini basi

TANZANIA’S engineers outnumber the rest in East Africa six member states community, which is almost equal to combine total of the remaining personnel.

The number of engineers in the country based on data from Engineer Registration Board (ERB) is bigger compared to the combined number of engineers in Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda and Burundi.

The ERB statistics show that the country has at least 17,800 engineers compared to almost 10,000 of Kenya and Uganda about half of Kenya.
“This is one area which we [Tanzania Engineers] are not threatened by our counterparts in the region,” Eng Patrick Balozi of ERB told 'Daily News'.

Mr Balozi said stiff competition and donor conditions attached at construction projects they finance have been posing challenges for EAC construction firms to come to Tanzania.

“Our biggest concern is not losing a job to our fellow engineers in the region rather getting jobs from donor aided projects. The trend is if a financier finance a certain project wants a contractor, a consultant to come from the same country that has aided the project,” Eng Balozi said.

Analysts said despite the fact that some designing and engineering needs to observe local culture and tradition, still donor countries seem not to agree. Engineers gave an example of Dar Rapid Transport which was delayed due to a number of modifications made from the original plan as it was designed with Brazilian touches inapplicable to Tanzanian cultures.

"This denies us [engineers] to participate on big national projects…. we have many opportunities in the country, only if we managed to walk from this donor conditions. We don’t even consider crossing borders to other EAC member states,” Eng Balozi said.

Integrity Business and Investment Solutions, Managing Director Octavian Kivyiro said the Engineering Act 1997 contravene with EAC’s free labour movement protocol.

“Tanzania is the highest on unconforming convergence services— especially on engineering professional movement,” Mr Kivyiro said. The removal of restriction will allow engineers form either side to join hands in joint venture or merger and bid for big local and international projects.

Last week Tanzania’s stakeholders in East Africa trade and investment integration met and deliberated on steps to fast track removal of non-tariffs barriers (NTBs) and restrictions to boost cross-border trade.

The stakeholders, met under Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) umbrella, deliberated mainly on restriction based on Engineering Act and NTBs. However, Eng Patrick Balozi of Engineer Registration Board, said the proposal for amending the Engineering Act was drafted two years ago but “to date nothing have been done.”

Wahandisi watanzania tukianzia na board yao lazima wabadilike. Ubunifu bila pesa,we jamaa vipi?

So what's here to shine about? 😂😂😂 Shining is achieving something, what have you shone at here?🤣🤣

Let me repeat:-

You call yourself an engineer and don't understand why?
Tz registration of engineers is simplistic. As long as you have the degree, you are registered.
In Kenya, you have to work under a registered engineer in the same field for a minimum of three years, write a report, apply for an interview, pass the interview before you're registered hence the numbers seem more in Tz but skilled engineers are more in Kenya. To cut the story short, most engineers in Kenya are unregistered by the EBK. Stop being stupid. That's the reason your country is still sourcing Kenyan engineers despite your supposed 'superior numbers'

Tanzania ukimaliza chuo Unatakiwa Kujisajili kuwa Graduate Engineer.

Utatatika kufanya kazi si chini ya Miaka 3 na kuwa supervised na Professional Engineer ndio uwe Engineer kamili.

The other thing that is very obvious, ni ubora wa Elimu wa inayomuandaa Engineer Kwenye hizi nchi mbili.

Ila Ukienda Kenya Wanasoma Applied Physics au Mathematics only wakiwa chuo kikuu, hivyo inawafanya wanafunzi wake kukosa Conceptual Understanding iliyokamili kuhusu Fani husika.

Practical training.

First of all, if you have to include facts in your write-up, at least get them right. In Kenya, Engineering courses take 5 years not 4 years. The first year is where you study Advanced calculus, engineering Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and some social sciences.

Secondly, the total number of years taken for an engineering student in Kenya and Tanzania is the same. In Kenya, its 8-4-5 (Primary, Secondary, University) a total of 17 years. In Tanzania it's 7-6-4, again a total of 17 years hence your analogy on the number of years is crap - just like most things posted by Tanzanians here. 🚮 🚮

Thirdly, It's stupid and simplistic to judge the quality of education by the number of years spent in school. In England, it takes 3 years to complete an Engineering degree and a total of 16 years from primary to university. So are you going to claim Tanzania's education is superior to England's because you take longer? Are you trying to say UDSM graduates better engineers than Oxford? 🚮 🚮

Fourth, your conclusion is that Tanzania's education is superior to Kenya's yet the monied in Tanzania bring their kids to learn in Kenya while international schools and aristocratic private schools in Tanzania seek to hire Kenyan teachers. Why would rich people in Tanzania leave better education in Tanzania to come to inferior education in Kenya? Don't you think you're stupid?

Now, back to Engineering. I know the process is the same in Kenya as it is in Tanzania (You immediately register as a graduate engineer then after 3 years under a professional engineer, you qualified to register as a Professional Engineer) - the difference is the rigor of the process. Kenya's process is way more rigorous hence fewer Graduate Engineers in Kenya manage to register as professional engineers hence we have fewer records of engineers in Kenya. Meanwhile in Tanzania, more engineers are registered. For instance, I graduated sometime back over 6 years ago, our class had 140 students, Currently, I am in the process of writing my report for registration. If successful, I will be among the first ones from our class to register. Less than 6 individuals from my class are registered so far. Meanwhile, our class had a Tanzanian who moved back to Tanzania after graduation, he got registered exactly 3 years after our graduation - before anyone from our class registered. You get the gist now?

On practical training - Which construction technology are you using that hasn't been used in Kenya? Currently, we are doing the expressway, we did skyscrapers long before Tanzanians knew what a skyscraper is. Your first skyscraper was done in 2011 (PSPF Golden Jubilee Tower), our first skyscraper started in 1969 and completed in 1973(KICC), you built your first overpass 4 years ago, we have been having them since 1970s, we have geothermal energy and are even exporting engineers to build Ethiopia one, you don't, we have several wind farms while you are trying to build your first, we have had vehicle assembly plants long before you, we had a refinery thats now defunct - you have none, the pipeline you're planning to build, we have had it for over 50 years, we are leading in Africa in tech hubs, you have been using our radar for years now, we did the SGR before you so who between us can teach the other about new engineering technologies? First of all are you an engineer? Because only a non-engineer would mention something like 'ELECTRIC SGR', there is nothing like electric SGR. You sound like the rest of empty headed noisemakers in this forum na ushabiki wao. An SGR is an SGR, the electric part is the locomotive which can be installed on any SGR. This is not a maglev which has electricity running in the rail to form a magnetic field that floats the train on the rail. Stop trying to sound professional if you are not a professional and if you are, then Tanzania has some very shitty engineers. The technology used in construction of Tanzania's SGR is exactly the same as one used in Kenya's other than the welding and bolting part (which is very basic btw) and we did it long before you so I wonder what new technology you are talking about. Don't be like the ichoboys and Joto la jiwes and eliakeems who just argue for the sake of it.

Talking of ghorofas, everybody knows Nairobi has way more skyscrapers than Dar (ama unataka tuzilist) and outside Dar, there are no skyscrapers in Tanzania while Kenya has some outside Nairobi. About buildings collapsing - all buildings that have collapsed in Nairobi are ghetto buildings that definitely were done by quacks due to corruption (You are lucky your ghettos have no storied buildings). Meanwhile, in Tanzania, you have collapsed buildings right in the middle of the CBD that were definitely done by engineers. What does that say about your engineers?
Lastly, I have seen many major projects in Tanzania seeking the consultancy of Kenyan engineering and architect professionals (e.g Mwanza Airport, TPA Tower, Tanzanian Parliament, Fumba Town) yet I am yet to see a major Kenyan project done in Kenya that employed Tanzanian professionals so what is this superiority you talk of?

End of rant.
