How about Mombasa port and sgr-ke takes business away from 'dar port' (I doubt it exists)massive job losses & revenue loss to follow"

You should be worried much if at all your business men are opting out of Dar port in favour of Nairobi ICD.

Who tells you that Sgr is making a loss? Just because they reduced the price by 50% does not mean they are making a loss. Have you ever heard of the term economies of scale? Si wewe ni economist then you should know that one train carrying more than 100 containers will probably consume less than 10% of fuel that all the 100 trucks would have consumed. Also Gok will save money that would have been used to repair roads. So before you conclude that Sgr is making a loss, wait for their budget statement at the end of the financial year and go to statement of financial position and compare their total assets on the one hand with their Capital and liability on the other hand then you will be able to know whether they are insolvent or not. Kwa sasa ni mapema sana, give KR space to breathe. I would argue even if they made a loss in the first year, what's the problem if they are able to "recoup" it in the subsequent years?

They haven't, Dar cargo has increase na sasa we even dock lager ships. Hii wala haituumizi vichwa.

For SGR to meet its financial objectives, The minimum charge on cargo and passangers was calculated and CRBC gave a figure 3k per person NBO-MSA and 80K per teu MSA-NBI. Any deviation from this is prolonging the repayment period and thus raising the intrest payable. This extra intrest will be paid from taxpayers whilst the money was used to move Tanzanian Cargo

Tanzanian cargo is mere 400 containers, remember Uganda had more than 3,500 this week. Na Waganda hawapigi makelele hata saa hii wamelala. Did you expect Gok to tell Kenyans that" We will not use Sgr because the traders have refused to engage our services at ksh 80,000 per teu. " Unadhani wakenya wangeambia aje Gok? Some of the things you expect Gok to do is insane. Ni kama mtu afungue cyber cafe halafu aanze kucharge one bob per minute na next cyber inacharge 50 cent per minute. So unaexpect mwenye cyber afanye nini, afunge biashara? Wachanga mchezo, na kama ako na familia ya kulisha? Thats why WB economists concluded that SGR was uneconomical. Even with railway dev levy +passanger + cargo revenue at optimum, The minimum charge to make economic sense for the loan and insane 8% intrest is 3k per economy class and 80k per teu..More expensive than road transport with road maitenance added.

You have a fair point about viability. However, i like Sgr mainly because it will open up previously closed up areas. And the long term impact of that is enormous. Remember, the old railway was actually very costly for the British empire but they persisted even though the critics then said that it was uneconomical. Look at what that railway has done for Kenya. Mombasa port would be useless without that railway. Nairobi would not exist simply because it was a railway depot. Nakuru would not exist because it was a stopover between Nairobi and Kisumu, for people to rest (and later some white settlers settled in Nakuru). Kisumu port would not exist without the railway. Kampala would not exist without the railway. Listen, the advantages of constructing railway is far bigger and beneficiaal than you think. It's not just about carrying cargo and people. It is also about opening up previously closed areas. Turning primitive African jungles into concrete cities like Nairobi and Kampala. That is how a real economist thinks....long term.
