Italian PSYOPS mission over Libya

PSYOPs Psychological operations are planned propaganda operations to convey selected information and indicators to foreign audiences to influence their emotions, motives, objective reasoning, and ultimately the behaviour of foreign governments, organisations, groups, and individuals.

On May 17, 2011, an Italian Air Force C-130J, departed in the morning from Pisa airbase, dropped about 400.000 leaflets over Tripoli, Libya. As reported by ANSA news agency, leaflets contained a message addressed to the Libyan people directly from the NTC (National Transition Council) that had asked Italy to deliver it to counter Gaddafi’s regime propaganda in Libya’s capital city.
The text of the message was:

"Libya is one and its capital is Tripoli. Today we ask you to join and to take the right and wise decision. Join our revolution. Let’s build Libya away from Gaddafi. A unified, free, democratic Libya."

The mission was planned by the COI (Comando Operativo di vertice Interforze – Italian Joint Operative Command) and was conducted by personnel belonging to both the 28° Rgmt “Pavia, based in Pesaro and specialized in “operative communication”), the ItAF and the Intelligence Service. The airdrop took place from 7.000 mt (20.000 ft – the crew had to wear oxygen masks to operate at that altitude) from a position that was calculated taking into consideration many factors, among which the air temperature and humidity, the aircraft airspeed, the wind direction and intensity etc. Leaflets took up to 3 hours to touch the ground in Tripoli and surrounding areas.

The PSYOPS sortie was an Italian mission, not part of Unified Protector, even if NATO was obviously informed about the operation and supported it.

Even if Italy has conducted similar missions in Afghanistan using helicopters, this was the first time since 1918 that the ItAF performed a PSYOPS mission dropping leaflets over a foreign capital since 1918 raid over Wien by Gabriele D’Annunzio (Aug. 9, 1918).

Reuters: Colonel Gaddafi's wife and daughter cross border from Libya into Tunisia
(Reuters) - The wife and daughter of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi crossed over the border into Tunisia several days ago, a Tunisian security source told Reuters.

Gaddafi's wife Safia and his daughter Aisha came to Tunisia with a Libyan delegation on May 14 and are on the island of Djerba in the south, the source said.

"It was expected that they would leave yesterday but they are still at Djerba," the source added.

It did not appear that the two women had been traveling with Shokri Ghanem, Libya's top oil official, who is believed to have also crossed into Tunisia and appears to have defected.

Not this time. I don't think so. This news has been going around for a couple of days before being elevated to status "confirmed". The same like Shokri's defection. So it seems highly credible.

Since the revolt began in February against Gaddafi's rule, Aisha Gaddafi has made several public appearances backing her father and attacking the rebels and Western powers trying to overthrow him.

A month ago she appeared at her father's Bab al-Aziziyah compound in Tripoli and addressed cheering crowds of supporters in an event broadcast live on Libyan state television.

"Talk about Gaddafi stepping down is an insult to all Libyans because Gaddafi is not in Libya, but in the hearts of all Libyans," she said.

A lawyer by training, Gaddafi's daughter runs a charitable foundation and in 2004 joined a team of lawyers defending former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Libyan Gov denies report that Gaddafi wife and daughter are in Tunisia



Deputy Foreign Minister Khalid Kiam says Gaddafi's wife and daughter Aisha are in Tripoli. (2245 18/05/11)

Acting strange. On Monday, Musa Ibrahim (gov. spokesman) denied that Shokri Ghenam has left for Tunisia and now Khalid Kiam says Gaddafi's wife and daughter are still in Tripoli. The truth will, however, soon come out!

This is a good move by Gadaffi, if NATO seek to intimidating him to surrender by killing his family, then it is wise to keep them away.
Besides, Those Ladies could at the time of intense toughness kill the will of the man who is willing to defend his country even to his death.
Let them stay away for a moment.
 
Gaddafi's wife and daughter heading from Tunisia to Poland

A Tunisian newspaper on Thursday reported that the wife of Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's and their daughter Aisha had left the Tunisian airport of Djerba heading to Poland. It added that Polish government sources confirmed the arrival of the wife and daughter from Tunisia.

The Tunisian Ministry of the Interior has denied on Wednesday that the wife and Aisha had entered the Tunisian territory, contrary to many press reports about this.

A spokesman for the Tunisian Ministry of the Interior was quoted as saying: "The presence of members of the Gaddafi family is subject to international sanctions including a travel ban," pointing out that the Tunisian authorities will enforce these sanctions in case members of the Gaddafi family try to enter into the territory of Tunisia".

NATO chief "confident Gaddafi rule will collapse"

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - The head of the NATO military alliance said Thursday that military and political pressure were weakening Muammar Gaddafi's hold on power in Libya and would eventually topple him. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen delivered his message as Libya's government denied persistent rumours that Gaddafi's wife, daughter and top oil official had left the country.

Libyan officials have produced no evidence of the whereabouts of the three, raising questions about Gaddafi's ability to hold together his entourage in the face of a widespread rebellion and NATO bombing. "We have significantly degraded Gaddafi's war machine. And now we see results, the opposition has gained ground," Rasmussen told a news conference in the Slovak capital, Bratislava.

"I am confident that combination of strong military pressure and increased political pressure and support for the opposition will eventually lead to the collapse of the regime."

Obama says Gaddafi's departure from Libya inevitable

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Thursday it was inevitable Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi would have to leave power and only then could a democratic transition in the North African state proceed.

Obama was speaking as part of a major address in Washington about the Middle East, which has seen a series of uprisings this year including ones that have toppled governments in Tunisia and Egypt as well as a three-month-old revolt in Libya.

"Time is working against Gaddafi. He does not have control over his country. The opposition has organised a legitimate and credible Interim Council," Obama said.

"When Gaddafi inevitably leaves or is forced from power, decades of provocation will come to an end, and the transition to a democratic Libya can proceed.

"Had we not acted along with our NATO allies and regional coalition partners, thousands would have been killed. The message would have been clear: keep power by killing as many people as it takes," he said.

His comments echoed those of NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen who said on Thursday military and political pressure were weakening Gaddafi's hold on power and would eventually topple him.

NATO this morning detained a tanker in Malta that was due to ship fuel from Italy to a port in western Libya, a senior Libyan source told Petroleum Economist. The Jupiter was destined for a port within the Qadhafi-held east and the well-placed sourced said it was carrying 12,750 tonnes of gasoline for use by the regime's military forces.

A Nato official told Petroleum Economist that the ship was boarded "and told it cannot deliver its gasoline because fuel is being diverted to regime forces". He added that the ship was now at anchor off Tripoli awaiting instruction from its owner.

Nato added: "It is the Qadhafi regime which is depriving its own citizens of vehicle fuel by diverting reserves for military use. Nato naval forces can deny access to vessels entering or leaving Libyan ports if there is reliable intelligence to suggest that the vessel or its cargo will be used to support attacks or threats on civilians, either directly or indirectly."

And for the first time, Nato said UN Resolution 1973, which authorises military action to protect civilians from harm, could now cover the supply of fuel to the regime.

"UNSCR 1973 authorises all necessary measures to protect civilians and preventing the use of fuel for vehicles attacking civilians is within the mandate," Nato said.

A second vessel, the Cartegena, is still thought to be heading from Turkey to Zawiyah, in western Libya, carrying 42,000 tonnes of fuel for the regime. The source said it had been told to sail well south of Malta, amid fears that its cargo may also be interdicted. Although the tankers bill of lading states Tripoli, Lebanon, as its destination, the cargo is heading for Libya.

NATO aircraft target Tripoli's seaport

Smoke rises from a fire on a boat on Thursday in Tripoli after NATO air strikes targeted the port of the Libyan capital.

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- NATO aircraft targeted warships overnight, striking eight of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's vessels in Tripoli's seaport, the organization said Friday morning. A Libyan government official said the targets included commercial vessels as well as military ones.

"All NATO's targets are military in nature and are directly linked to the Gadhafi regime's systematic attacks on the Libyan people," said Rear Adm. Russell Harding, deputy commander of Operation Unified Protector. "Given the escalating use of naval assets, NATO had no choice but to take decisive action to protect the civilian population of Libya and NATO forces at sea."

In a statement, NATO said the attack occurred after two weeks of escalating use of government maritime forces that had disrupted the flow of humanitarian assistance. All the vessels targeted were naval warships with no civilian utility, said Harding.

But a Libyan official who led CNN personnel on a tour of the area said the commercial port, not the nearby military port, was hit. From the distance at which CNN was allowed to view the area, it was not clear what sort of vessels were hit.

The port's general manager, Mohammed Ahmed Rashed, told reporters that six rockets struck in three strikes that hit five coast guard boats and one navy vessel, which had been in dock for maintenance. The port remained operational, he said.

Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim called the attack a "clear attempt to bring the nation to its knees," and said the port serves as the main entry point for food and other critical supplies into the country. "The nation will starve," he said.

"Obama is still delusional," Ibrahim said. "He believes the lies that his own government is spreading around the world and his own media is spreading around the world. They have not proved one single charge against us and they refuse to investigate us."

He added, "It's not Obama who decides whether Moammar Gadhafi leaves Libya or not. It's the Libyan people who decide their future."

Russia slams NATO strikes on Libya

NATO says its fighter jets have destroyed eight Libyan warships in the ports of Tripoli, Al Khums and Sirt.
Russia has once again slammed NATO for its air strikes on Libya, calling for the deployment of international peacekeeping forces to end the violence in the North African country.


Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Friday that “The actions of the coalition do not respect the UN Security Council Resolution No. 1973”, which authorized the enforcement of a no-fly zone to protect civilians.

Lukashevich said Russia believed NATO's aerial attacks killed civilians and destroyed Libya's infrastructure.

The Russian official also called for resolving the crisis in Libya through diplomatic and political channels “with the help of the peacekeeping potential of the UN and the African Union.”

Lukashevich emphasized that all decisions concerning the situation in Libya should be taken by the UN Security Council.

However, NATO spokeswoman Carmen Romero said on Saturday that NATO operations have weakened the ability of Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi's forces to attack civilians.

“We have the momentum -- we will prevent attacks and threats against civilians until the threat is removed. The evidence shows we are doing just that,” Romero said.

NATO military spokesman Wing Commander Mike Bracken also said NATO's campaign has confined the movement of Gaddafi forces and forced the embattled ruler to go into hiding.

The military alliance said on Friday its fighter jets had destroyed eight Libyan warships in the ports of Tripoli, Al Khums and Sirt.
