Thousands of Rebels Approach Tripoli: Reuters Witness
By REUTERS. Published: August 21, 2011 at 1:36 PM ET

OUTSIDE TRIPOLI (Reuters)
- Thousands of rebel fighters 25 km (15 miles) west of Tripoli were seen moving toward the capital Sunday evening, a Reuters correspondent at the scene said.

The fighters passed a road sign saying Tripoli was 25 km away, the correspondent said. He said that as the rebels advanced they took control of a barracks belonging to the so-called Khamis brigade, the Libyan government's most elite security unit which is commanded by one of Gaddafi's sons, Khamis.

Foreign news media networks BBC, CNN, Al-Jazeera, Arabia, PressTV and others are once again spreading lies such as that the son of Muammar Qaddafi, Saif al Islam, has been captured.

They are also reporting on snipers to sow confusion and fear but they fail to mention that the snipers are western agents and are attempting also to assassinate truth reporters, in what is clearly a targeted campaign to prevent any media coverage of events and manage it via the above compromised media networks.

Libyan news web sites have been taken off the Internet in attempts to silence and prevent the government from being able to report to the world, given that foreign media residing in Libya have proven themselves incapable of doing so.

For this reason, over the past days and weeks there have been frequent attempts to take Mathaba News off line all of which have failed, with Mathaba remaining as the only independent news network on-line during the current crisis.

It is also the reason that the foreign agents operating in Tripoli have been tasked with eliminating independent truth news reporters Dr Franklin Lamb, Mahdi Nazemroaya and Lizzie Phelan, the first two of which have been shot at during the past few hours, but escaped the assassination attempts.

Several reporters and journalists with western agencies are working directly with NATO as intelligence agents, and a CNN journalist threatened Mahdi Nazemroaya wishing that he be killed by the terrorist rebels, after a sniper narrowly missed him while he was on the roof of the hotel.

He had gone onto the roof to put a large white sheet with PRESS written on it with tomato sauce (ketchup) so that NATO air craft would not have any excuse for bombing the hotel. However, NATO has a history of deliberately targeting journalists covering war zones. #

[h=3]"NATO using rebels as pawns"[/h]*NATO is blocking any attempts by Libyan rebels to negotiate with the Gaddafi regime, claimed Franklin Lamb, director of Americans for Middle East Peace.

"We have talked to rebels who want negotiations," said Lamb, who is now in Tripoli. "They don't want to kill their Libyan brothers and sisters. NATO has forbidden that. This is NATO's campaign. They need Gaddafi dead or out of the country, so that they can claim a victory. In a sense, they are using the rebels as pawns. And when the thing is over, depending on which way it plays out, I think there will be enormous infighting."

If the violence does drag on, some analysts say, the UN may extend NATO's mandate to carry out air strikes against the Libyan regime during the UN General Assembly in New York next month.

"This could happen, if they don't get rid of Gaddafi," said Ivan Eland, a senior fellow at the Independent Institute in Washington, "I am sure getting rid of him is their main goal, while protecting civilians is their stated goal."

HEBU SOMA HAPA Propaganda War Attempting To Boost Rebels

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Euphoric Libyan rebels took control of most of Tripoli in a lightning advance Sunday, celebrating the victory in Green Square, the symbolic heart of Moammar Gadhafi's regime. Gadhafi's defenders quickly melted away as his 42-year rule crumbled, but the leader's whereabouts were unknown and pockets of resistance remained.State TV broadcast Gadhafi's bitter pleas for Libyans to defend his regime. Opposition fighters captured his son and one-time heir apparent, Seif al-Islam, who along with his father faces charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands. Another son was under house arrest.

"It's over, frizz-head," chanted hundreds of jubilant men and women massed in Green Square, using a mocking nickname of the curly-haired Gadhafi. The revelers fired shots in the air, clapped and waved the rebels' tricolor flag. Some set fire to the green flag of Gadhafi's regime and shot holes in a poster with the leader's image.
The startling rebel breakthrough, after a long deadlock in Libya's 6-month-old civil war, was the culmination of a closely coordinated plan by rebels, NATO and anti-Gadhafi residents inside Tripoli, rebel leaders said. Rebel fighters from the west swept over 20 miles (30 kilometers) in a matter of hours Sunday, taking town after town and overwhelming a major military base as residents poured out to cheer them. At the same time, Tripoli residents secretly armed by rebels rose up.
When rebels reached the gates of Tripoli, the special battalion entrusted by Gadhafi with guarding the capital promptly surrendered. The reason: Its commander, whose brother had been executed by Gadhafi years ago, was secretly loyal to the rebellion, a senior rebel official Fathi al-Baja told The Associated Press.
Al-Baja, the head of the rebels' political committee, said the opposition's National Transitional Council had been working on the offensive for the past three months, coordinating with NATO and rebels within Tripoli. Sleeper cells were set up in the capital, armed by rebel smugglers. On Thursday and Friday, NATO intensified strikes inside the capital, and on Saturday, the sleeper cells began to rise up.
President Barack Obama said Libya is "slipping from the grasp of a tyrant" and urged Gadhafi to relinquish power to prevent more bloodshed.
"The future of Libya is now in the hands of the Libyan people," Obama said in a statement from Martha's Vineyard, where he's vacationing. He promised to work closely with rebels.
By the early hours of Monday, opposition fighters controlled most of the capital. The seizure of Green Square held profound symbolic value — the plaza was the scene of pro-Gadhafi rallies organized by the regime almost every night, and Gadhafi delivered speeches to his loyalists from the historic Red Fort that overlooks the square. Rebels and Tripoli residents set up checkpoints around the city, though pockets of pro-Gadhafi fighters remained. In one area, AP reporters with the rebels were stopped and told to take a different route because of regime snipers nearby.
Abdel-Hakim Shugafa, a 26-year-old rebel fighter, said he was stunned by how easy it was. He saw only about 20 minutes of gunbattles as he and his fellow fighters pushed into the capital at nightfall.
"I expect Libya to be better," said Shugafa, part of a team guarding the National Bank near Green Square. "He (Gadhafi) oppressed everything in the country — health and education. Now we can build a better Libya."
In a series of angry and defiant audio messages broadcast on state television, Gadhafi called on his supporters to march in the streets of the capital and "purify it" of "the rats." He was not shown in the messages.
His defiance raised the possibility of a last-ditch fight over the capital, home to 2 million people. Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim claimed the regime has "thousands and thousands of fighters" and vowed: "We will fight. We have whole cities on our sides. They are coming en masse to protect Tripoli to join the fight."
But it seemed that significant parts of Gadhafi's regime and military were abandoning him. His prime minister, Al-Baghdadi Al-Mahmoudi, fled to a hotel in the Tunisian city of Djerba, said Guma el-Gamaty, a London-based rebel spokesman.
NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Gadhafi's regime was "clearly crumbling" and that the time to create a new democratic Libya has arrived.

Libyan rebels in Tripoli's central square

Celebrations in Tripoli as Gaddafi's defences collapse and two of his sons, including Saif al-Islam, are captured.

Last Modified: 22 Aug 2011 02:54

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports from Green Square in central Tripoli

Euphoric Libyan rebels have moved into the centre of the capital, Tripoli, as Muammar Gaddafi's defenders melted away and thousands of jubilant civilians rushed out of their homes to cheer the long convoys of pickup trucks packed with fighters shooting in the air.

The rebels' surprising and speedy leap forward, after six months of largely deadlocked civil war, was packed into just a few dramatic hours. By nightfall on Sunday, they had advanced more than 32km to Tripoli.

Zeina Khodr, Al Jazeera's correspondent, said from the Green Square: "There's a party in the Libyan capital tonight. The people are in charge of the city. They've decided the square is now called Martyrs' Square, the original name. They're shouting 'We're free' and shooting at a poster of Gaddafi."

Abdul Hakim Belhaj, the Tripoli battalion commander for the opposition National Transition Council said, "We want to thank God for this victory, we call on the residents to protect the city, we call on remaining parts of the regime to surrender and join the opposition."

Green Square which has now been renamed Martyrs Square by the rebels had been the site of night rallies by Gaddafi supporters throughout the uprising.

Our correspondent said rebels met little resistance as they moved from the western outskirts into the capital.

"Hundreds are on the street, and most of them are armed. Most of these are fighters who came down from the mountains in western areas of Libya. They entered the capital a few hours ago and with the opposition inside the capital, have managed to liberate the city from the government's control," our correspondent said.

"People are worried about sleeper cells but cleaning up operations are under way to make sure there are no snipers in the buildings nearby. People are confident that the government has fallen and they are in control."

Pockets of fighters who are still loyal to Gaddafi still control parts of the city - including the areas around Gaddafi's Bab al-Azizia compound in the south of the city. The AFP news agency reported the sound of heavy gunfire in the area early on Monday morning.

The chairman of the rebel National Transitional Council Mustafa Mohammed Abdul Jalil said early on Monday: "I warn you, there are still pockets of resistance in and around Tripoli."

NATO's chief spokeswoman, Oana Lungescu, said there was no formal co-ordination between the military alliance, which has waged a months-long air campaign against Gaddafi, and the rebels on the ground.

"What we're seeing tonight is the regime crumbling," Lungescu told AFP news agency.

Saif al-Islam arrested

There was no word on the whereabouts of Gaddafi himself. Gaddafi has delivered a series of angry and defiant audio messages in recent days, vowing not to surrender. In the latest one, he acknowledged that opposition forces were moving into Tripoli and warned the city would be turned into another Baghdad.

"How come you allow Tripoli, the capital, to be under occupation once again?" he said. "The traitors are paving the way for the occupation forces to be deployed in Tripoli."

Earlier, the rebel leadership said that Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam, had been arrested in a tourist village in western Tripoli.

Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, confirmed Saif al-Islam had been detained and said the ICC would speak to the rebel National Transitional Council about his transfer to The Hague where the court is based.

Saif al-Islam, his father and Libya's intelligence chief, Abdullah al-Senussi, were indicted earlier this year for allegedly ordering, planning and participating in illegal attacks on civilians in the early days of the violent crackdown on anti-regime protesters.

Meanwhile, Gaddafi's eldest son, Mohammed, surrendered to rebel forces and spoke to Al Jazeera shortly afterwards.

In the interview, he took an apologetic tone and said it was a lack of wisdom that caused the revolution and crisis in Libya.

"I've never been a government or security official, however I can tell you the absence of wisdom and foresight is what brought us to here today. Our differences could have been solved easily," he said.

As he spoke though, his house was attacked and shot at and the interview ended with the sound of gunfire.

"I'm being attacked right now," he said. "This is gunfire inside my house, they're inside my house. There is no God but Allah - no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger."

However, the head of the National Transitional Council later told Al Jazeera that Mohammed was not hurt.

"Neither Mohamed Muammar Gaddafi nor any one of his family was harmed," Mustafa Abdel Jalil said. "He will remain in his house, and I guarantee his safety."

There were no confirmed reports about the whereabouts of other members of the Gaddafi family.

'Relinquish power'

US President Barak Obama said Gaddafi must "acknowledge the reality that he no longer controls Libya. He needs to relinquish power once and for all".

In a statement issued from Martha's Vineyard, where is on holiday, Obama said: "The future of Libya is now in the hands of the Libyan people." He promised to work in close co-ordination with the rebels and said the US would "continue to insist that the basic rights of the Libyan people are respected."

There were unconfirmed reports that two South African air force planes were spotted at Tripoli airport.

Speculation was rife that the planes were there to ferry Gaddafi out of Libya, but Mahmoud Shamam, of the NTC told Al Jazeera that it was unlikely the planes were meant for that purpose as the airport was under rebel control. He added that he did not believe that Gaddafi is in Tripoli.

Mohammed Dangor, South Africa's ambassador to Libya, speaking from Johannesburg, told Al Jazeera he had no knowledge of any of his country's planes in Tripoli.

"I have no knowledge of any South African planes in Tripoli ... but Nato should know, since they control the airport and no plane can land without their permission," he said.

Jalil said the rebels would halt their offensive if Gaddafi announced his departure. "We will give Colonel Gaddafi and his sons a safe passage out of the country," said Jalil.
