Libya's National Transitional Council claim to have captured and killed Colonel Gaddafi in the town of Sirte.

Reuters news agency reports that the country's former leader has died of wounds suffered during his capture.

"He's captured. He's wounded in both legs ... He's been taken away by ambulance," the senior NTC military official told Reuters by telephone.

It is thought Gaddafi was trying to flee in a convoy that was attacked by NATO when he was captured by the NTC.

The senior NTC military official told Reuters by telephone that the head of Gaddafi's armed forces Abu Bakr Younus Jabr had been killed during the capture of the Libyan ex-leader.

A member of Libya's NTC told Sky News that he was wearing a khaki uniform and wearing a turban.

A conflicting report from an NTC fighter claims that Gaddafi was found hiding in a hole in Sirte, shouting "don't shoot, don't shoot".

In yet another account of events Al Jazeera TV claim Colonel Gaddafi has been killed.

The US state department says it cannot confirm media reports of Gaddafi's capture.

SIRTE, Libya (Reuters) - Deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was captured and wounded in both legs near his hometown of Sirte at dawn on Thursday, National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid said.Majid reported the capture after Libyan interim government fighters took the town on Thursday, extinguishing the last significant resistance by forces loyal to the former leader and ending a two-month siege.
"He's captured. He's wounded in both legs ... He's been taken away by ambulance," the senior NTC military official told Reuters by telephone.
Gaddafi was trying to flee in a convoy which NATO warplanesattacked, Majid said. The head of Gaddafi's armed forces Abu Bakr Younus Jabr had been killed during the capture of the Libyan ex-leader, he added.
Majid said NATO warplanes struck the convoy and hit four cars as it headed west. Ahmed Ibrahim, a cousin and adviser of Gaddafi, was also captured.
In the capital Tripoli, sounds of gun shots were heard and people cheered in the street: "God is Great, God is Great, Gaddafi has been captured."

Pro-Gaddafi TV denies strongman dead or captured (AFP)

TRIPOLI — A pro-Gaddafi television website denied Thursday reports that the strongman had been killed or captured.

‘The reports peddled by the lackeys of NATO about the capture or death of the brother leader, Muammar Gaddafi, is baseless,’ said Al Libiya television.

Gaddafi ‘is in good health,’ it added.

Earlier National Transitional Council commander Mohammed Leith told AFP that Gaddafi was captured Thursday as his hometown Sirte was falling, adding that the ousted strongman was badly wounded.
