Dar port cannot determine the insurance premium charged on shipping line (and later passed on to customers) by insurance companies nor can it force the shipping company not to pass through Somalia's seas in order to reduce the insurance surcharges.


Tanzania also cannot force Maersk or COSCO to use or NOT to use Lamu port as a transshipment hub for Tanzanian bound containers. Shipping charges r set my shipliner based on distance but though port call charges r set by respective countries u can not completely discard the fact that shipping liners set their charges based on port charges!

Yeah. Of course you are correct about that. Port call charges are also part of the overall cost of shipping and shipping lines have to take that into consideration. But when it comes to those charges I am not sure which country between Kenya and Tanzania charges more when it comes to port call charges. I wouldn't be suprised if TZ is the one which charges more.

When it comes to Lamu port I have said several times that GoK has lowered port charges and storage costs. For examples shippers can store their containers in Lamu port for free for I think 1 month or 2 months, I can't remember very well. Those promotional offers were released I think two years ago by KPA. So Maersk will store its containers at Lamu port for free without paying storage charges for 1 or 2 months. Which shipping line will refuse such a beautiful offer?
