Fake hip hop is not when rappers rap about girls, money, cars, gangsta life and shooting people. Fake hip hop is when people that have never actually been through that kind of thing are rapping about it. But personally I can't think of any examples of that unless the rapper is KNOWN to be from the suburbs, which the only people that come to mind on that one is Bow Wow and Kanye. If rappers traditionally rap about girls and shooting people etc, that is because they are from the hood and those are actually things that you AT LEAST see and may even possibly DO. I think people think this kind of thing is fake because they're not from the hood so they don't believe that this kind of stuff can actually go on. They also don't understand that rappers (just like any type of artist) are going to exaggerate things for storytelling purposes. But that's rap, and people focus way too much on how the bamma is simply exaggerating things to make a better story! And actually, if you have seen these documentaries about Biggie, he wasn't really that kind of vicious guy. He was more of like a tamer dude and he really didn't get into the whole hustling thing, he just loved to rap. That doesn't make him fake though - I'm sure he's seen all types of stuff in his lifetime. Same for the other rappers. EVEN if they suck, that doesn't NECISSARILY mean they're fake. You actually have to look into their story to find out if they're fake. But just remember, it's not the music that is fake, it's the person. And there's no way Lil Wayne fits into that category (and I am NOT a Wayne fan so I don't even need people complaining..) . Lil Wayne, first of all, people don't give him credit for his first two albums (when he was with Cash Money) because THEY'RE the fake ones - they probably have only been listening to rap for only a couple of years and therefore don't remember when he rapped about struggling, hard times, hood girls, his baby mama, etc. They ONLY can think of songs like Lollipop because they have only been rap fans for a short time. But that's B.S. because even with Lollipop, it's like - he's rich and famous now - obviously women everywhere want him BAD and so he basically made a song about those kinds of women. Can anyone tell me what's fake about that? Didn't think so. He's actually having these kind of experiences. So it's not fake. Granted, Lollipop is one of the worst songs I can think of, it isn't really fake. Rappers BLOW UP and these skanks out here hop on it like flies on shyt. Then the rappers rap about all the women they're getting and people have the nerve to call THAT fake?! I think that sounds like jealousy. I think people are pointing the finger in the wrong direction a lot. Just because a song makes you DANCE, that is not a reason to call it FAKE. That's just lame. In REALITY, people need to dance, so a song about dancing is real.
It's things like rapping about being rich before you're really rich, that makes them sound fake and they just sound and look dumb doing it. It's rappers that are BRAND NEW on the scene rapping about all the women they get but the rapper is ugly and unheard of - that's fake. I would also say that the overusage of the word BRICKS makes people sound fake too. Obviously, the majority of our rappers have never even seen a brick. But you really have to look into their hood story before you call it fake.
Besides, you're right - Tupac, Biggie, Eazy and all of them rapped about the same damn things. I think what people have totally twisted is that it's not that the TOPIC of the lyrics sucks, it's that the rappers aren't very TALENTED and they didn't really earn their spot on the charts, they were just given it because mass media dictates what we listen to, etc. But I wouldn't worry about the topics of rap being about girls, money, cars, gangsta life and shooting people because that shyt it very much still happening today. I would call the softer rappers fake for even thinking they're above people that rap about struggling.
