Armed Goons Attempt To Attack IEBC Personnel Preparing Petition Responses, Commission Says

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) personnel preparing responses to the Presidential election petitions filed at the Supreme Court were nearly attacked on Monday night, the commission has reported.

According to IEBC, the goons that attempted to attack its personnel on Monday night were wielding crude weapons.

“Today, Monday, 22nd August, 2022 at around 8:30pm an organised group of goons wielding crude weapons attempted to attack IEBC personnel preparing responses to Presidential election petitions at a premise within Nairobi. However, they were repulsed by Security,” the commission alleged in a tweet on Monday night.

IEBC further called on the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to address the issue.

“The Commission condemns this act of hooliganism and intimidation, and calls upon the Inspector of Police (IG) to bring to an end this blatant abuse of the Rule of Law,” it said.

The alleged attack comes in the wake of 8 petitions filed at the Supreme Court, challenging the results of the 2022 Presidential Election.

In the petitions, IEBC, its Chairperson Wafula Chebukati and other commissioners have been widely named as respondents, and are facing accusations of electoral malpractice, irregularities and failure to uphold the constitution.

William Ruto, whom Chebukati declared President-elect on August 15 is also named as a respondent in the petitions.
