In those years the family has been able to it through narration by Kleist Sykes who learned most of the history of the tribe from his guardian, Effendi Plantan. Plantan raised Kleist in his own household after the death of his father Sykes Mbuwane.

[TD="width: 601"] The Mbuwane clan has its origin in South Africa. The clan was under the rule of Chaka the famous King of the Zulu people. The tribe had trekked north from South Africa to Mozambique running away from tribal wars. In Mozambique the Zulu chiefdom of Inhambane did not find lasting peace and was engaged in a war with the Portuguese which lasted many years. Eventually the Zulu were defeated because of an agreement which one of the chief's sons signed with the Portuguese.

It is believed there were treachery in the agreement and because the Portuguese did not keep their part of the bargain, the Zulu were therefore disadvantaged. This caused their downfall and eventual defeat. It has not been possible to get information as to what kind of a bargain was struck between the two warring nations, but it is sufficient to note that the Zulu defeat was not as a result of military strength of the Portuguese over the Zulu... seminar paper at the University of Dar es Salaam in 1968. Daisy wrote this paper with
the assistance of her father Abdulwahid Sykes, from an original manuscript written by Kleist
Sykes. Other information on Al Jamiatul Islamiyya fi Tanganyika is from Tewa Said Tewa's
unpublished manuscript, ‘A Probe In the History of Islam in Tanganyika'. Other information
is from Ali Mwinyi Tambwe, secretary Al Jamiatul Islamiyya in the early 1940s.

[TD="width: 601"] One person who inspired Kleist into politics was Dr James Kwegyir, a Ghanaian. Dr Aggrey came to Tanganyika in 1924. Dr Aggrey served on the Phelps-Stokes Commissions which were appointed to enquire into African education. It was while serving in this Commission that he visited Tanganyika.

Dr Aggrey was refused accommodation at the New Africa Hotel, Dar es Salaam, for being black. An alternative accommodation was found for him by Governor Donald Cameron in the Government House. It was while he was in Dar es Salaam that Dr Aggrey came into contact with Kleist. Dr Aggrey presented Kleist with one of his own published books which he autographed. None of his sons can remember the title of the book. Kleist cherished this book and it decorated Kleist's bookshelf for many years. Dr Aggrey inspired Kleist with what he was able to accomplish as a blackman.[1]

[1] Dr James Kwegyir Aggrey was born in 1875 and was educated in Cape Coastal Methodist
School. He became a teacher and headmaster and was an interpreter for the 1896 Ashanti
Expedition. He went to America and graduated from Livingstone College and Hood Theological
Seminary where he was ordained. He later gained his doctorate from Columbia University.
Dr Aggrey served on Phelps -Stokes Commissions of 1920 and 1924, which were appointed
to inquire into African education. It was while serving in this Commission that he visited Tanganyika.
He was appointed Vice-Principal of Achimota College in 1924 and died three years later in 1927.

Ikiwa sasa nitaanza na Cameron kuna Kleist Sykes World War I Diaries wasomaji watakosa kuzisoma
na hivi ni muhimu kwa kuwa zinaeleza vita vilikuwaje kati ya 1914 - 1918.

Nakuonjesha hapa chini kidogo upate ladha ya diary za Kleist za Vita vya Kwanza Vya Dunia:

Arabs in Tanganyika seized the opportunity to have their own back against the Germans. They still
remembered what the Germans did to their hero Abushiri whom they hanged in 1889. In 1915 they
joined forces with the British to drive the Germans from Tanganyika. History repeated itself; Kleist
and Schneider took part in a battle against theirs father's and the Germans' old enemies, the Arabs,
at Mwele Ndogo.

The battle took place on Christmas Eve of 1915 in the same area where Sykes Mbuwane and Affendi
Plantan, the Zulu mercenaries, landed at the turn of the century to support Germans against the Arabs
and locals. For ten hours from sunrise to just before sunset German forces were engaged by Arabs in a
fierce battle.

Kleist was promoted to Lance-Corporal for his part in that battle. Two days after the battle with Arabs
Kleist's company was ordered to proceed to Kahe. He remained in Kahe for a month and then they recieved
order to march towards Voi, a border town in Kenya. On the way to Voi Kleist fell sick and had to be returned
to Mombo, a mosquito-infested area because of the river which passed the town.

Kleist remained Mombo recuperating in a hospital for two months. From Mombo he was sent to Handeni. In April,
1916 news reached him while he was still on the battlefield that his mother had passed away.

Abdulwahid had met the Indian High Commissioner to East Africa in Nairobi in 1950 in his official capacity as secretary of TAA.

The colonial government was probably aware that since 1950 Abdulwahid and Ally were in constant contact with the Asia Socialist Conference and its Anti-Colonial Bureau.

This behaviour by the Association and its leadership had transformed it into a de facto political party.
