Watu tisa wamefariki dunia, wengine kadhaa kujeruhiwa katika mkanyagano uliotokea jana usiku nje ya Mall ya Freedom City mjini Kampala wakati wa kukaribisha mwaka mpya.

Jeshi la Polisi limesema watu hao wamepoteza maisha usiku wa kuamkia mwaka mpya 2023 baada ya Mshereheshaji kutangazia watu watoke nje ya Freedom City Mall kwenda kushuhudia milipuko ya #Fataki.

Msemaji wa Polisi #LukeOwoyesigyire amesema sababu ya vifo ni mkanyagano wa watu waliokuwa wakitaka kurejea ndani na wengine wakitoka nje ambapo Kati ya waliofariki yupo mtoto wa miaka 10.

Watu kadhaa wameripotiwa kujeruhiwa na wengine kulazwa Hospitali huku Jeshi la Polisi likifunga sehemu ya #FreedomCityMall kwaajili ya kuanza uchunguzi zaidi.

Police have closed part of Freedom City Mall after a new year stampede that left nine dead last night.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire on Sunday morning said the victims were crushed as hundreds of people tried to return to the hall after watching a fireworks display that ushered in the new year.

“It is alleged that the incident occurred at midnight when the event’s MC encouraged attendees to go outside and watch the fireworks display. After the display ended, a stampede ensued, resulting in the instant deaths of five people and injuries to several others,” Owoyesigyire said.

In a Sunday afternoon update, the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson said part of the mall has been closed to allow for investigations into last night’s incident that killed nine.

“Only the part where last night’s event happened has been closed to allow for investigations. That same area had another event scheduled for today but it cant happen since investigations are still ongoing on the crime scene,”Owoyesigyire told the Nile Post.

He however noted that other parts of the mall including the supermarket and other facilities are still open and business is still ongoing.

A visit at the mall on Sunday afternoon shows that some of the revelers including children who had come to the swimming pool have been refunded their money as the place is still a crime scene.

Takriban watu tisa akiwemo mvulana mmoja mwenye umri wa miaka 10 walikosa hewa hadi kufa huku umati wa watu waliokuwa wakikimbilia kuona fataki za Mwaka Mpya waliokwama kwenye njia nyembamba ndani ya eneo la maduka karibu na mji mkuu wa Uganda, polisi walisema.

Watu walianza kusukumana kwenye njia hiyo ya ndani ya eneo la maduka mengi la Freedom City mara tu baada ya kugonga saa sita usiku polisi walisema.

"Watu wengi walikwama walipokuwa wakiingia kwa wingi kuona fataki. Kwa kufanya hivyo, watu wengi walikosa hewa hadi kufa. Hadi sasa watu tisa wamethibitishwa kufariki," taarifa ya polisi ilisema.

Watu walikuwa wakisherehekea Mwaka Mpya kwenye eneo la maduka ambalo liko kwenye barabara kuu inayounganisha Kampala na uwanja wa ndege wa Entebbe.
