Ujamaa wa Tanzania meant everything to everybody depending on one's position in the society.
Tatizo kubwa la ujamaa wa Tanzania ni kwamba it was not supported by any explicit social theory, badala yake it was an amalgam of a glorious description of the past (very flawed historically), a powerful statement of an idealist policy (without a political programme) and a grandiose vision of the future without a grand theory of society.
No wonder ukaitwa ujamaa wa kiafrika ie "African Socialism", kwa sababu Lengo kuu lilikuwa ni political attempt ya kurudisha wananchi katika relations of production walizokuwa nazo kabla ya ujio wa the exploiter - kwanza beberu (imperialist) wakati wa primitive accumulation and eventually bepari (capitalist) mkazi, mkoloni.
Swali linalofuata ni je is it true kwamba before colonialism tuliishi chini ya mfumo wa ujamaa wa kiafrika?
Sio kweli.
Ujio wa ukoloni ulikoleza that integration na ujamaa didnt do anything to alter it. We will discuss that it a second...
Throughout uhuru pamoja na kile kipindi cha the so called Ujamaa, the state and the ruling class were OBJECTIVELY serving the "international capitalist system". The integration to this system was not as deep wakati wa ukoloni lakini it was deepened and strengthened zaidi after independence. Measures were taken baada ya uhuru irrespective of the rationalization OBJECTIVELY na kupelekea further integration within the capitalist system.
Wakati wa ujamaa (1967-1985), there was no attempt to change the colonial structure of the economy. The Tanzanian state continued to increase the production of cash crops for exports which deepened the country's external integration and dependency.
Attempts zote za 1967-1985 didnt mean to skip or jump the capitalist stage, for we were and still are very much part of the capitalist relations and capitalist milieu.
Tanzania inaendelea kuwa "An Underveloped Capitalist Society". Tanzania is a country dominated by small peasants. It is also one of the poorest countries on earth. These conditions provided (still do) excellent material and the social basis for various petty bourgeois ideology.
Ideas kuhusu usawa, social concordance...and the absence of conflict (amani, umoja na utulivu) emphasized by Ujamaa ideology was (still is) an idealisation of the life situation of peasants and the rationalization ya ndoto na matamanio ya poor peasants, ambao still constitute sehemu kubwa ya watanzania. Ikumbukwe kwamba chini ya Ujamaa wa Mwalimu (na to an extent 2015 to date), the rich and wealthy were/are portrayed as capitalist and imperialist (mabeberu) na MAADUI WAKUBWA WA UJAMAA....
