When people are suffering from iron-deficiency anaemia, the tongue can take on an abnormally pale, smooth look. It may come as a surprise, but your tongue can give pretty much information about your overall health and well-being, if you know what to look for.

White coating

When the tongue looks sort of white and pasty it may be an indication that there's some sort of infection present on the tongue. One possible cause also can be thrush, which is an overgrowth of candida bacteria.

Too dark

A healthy tongue should have a warm, pinkish colour, so when it looks dark brown or black, you need to wonder why. Chances are, the answer will be in your diet, lifestyle or medicine cabinet.

In fact, the filiform papillae on the top of the tongue can easily take on stains or various colours from the foods, drinks, antibiotics, lozenges, etc. that you consume.

Pale and smooth

When people are suffering from iron-deficiency anaemia, the tongue can take on an abnormally pale, smooth look. That happens when your body is dealing with a lack of iron, your blood doesn't have the necessary oxygen-carrying capacity to keep the tissues red.

Red and painful

When the tongue is healthy, pink colour mutates to bright or dark red, that can be a clue to certain nutritional deficiencies-especially a lack of vitamin B3, a condition known as pellagra. Anaemia or a diet lacking in folic acid and vitamin B-12 may also be to blame.

At the same time a temporary redness and pain in the tongue is most likely caused by something you ate or drank before. Sensitivity to certain flavours of toothpaste, mouthwash or gum, acidic foods like pineapple are potential culprits.

Turning yellow

A yellowish tint on the tongue is probably a clue that there is some sort of fungal or bacterial infection in the mouth. Another possible cause of tongue yellowing is gastric reflux.

Pain and burning sensation can affect just the tongue or the entire mouth; the sensation may be constant or it may come and go throughout the day. For reasons that are not definitely clear, this condition most commonly afflicts post-menopausal women.

Possible explanation is that there could be some damage to the nerves of the tongue that are somehow related to the hormonal changes of menopause. Other possible causes include bacterial infections, dry mouth (a side effect of some medications) or nutritional deficiencies.

Quivery tongue with a red tip

Both, a quivery tongue or a red-tipped tongue, are symptoms associated with stress, adrenal fatigue, depression and insomnia. If this is what your tongue looks like you need to take extra time to take care of yourself.

Relaxing practices such as yoga can be helpful. Average shape, pink body, thin white coating: This tongue is considered normal. Congratulations! Keep doing what you're doing.
