Currency Volatility
Currency volatility poses a significant challenge for sustainable energy projects in Africa. The IEA report emphasizes that investing in foreign currency assets can result in a mismatch between the financing currency and the revenue-generating currency.

In Africa, most clean power projects primarily generate revenue in the local currency. As a result, the risk associated with fluctuations in currency is effectively transferred to utility companies and, in certain cases, even to end users.

When the local currency depreciates or foreign reserves become scarce, off-takers may face difficulties in servicing foreign currency debt. This situation adds strain to a nation's foreign currency reserves, particularly during periods of steep depreciation.

It's important to note that shortages of foreign currency or the enforcement of capital controls can significantly impact project developers.

These restrictions can impede their ability to access foreign exchange for crucial imports or, in extreme scenarios, halt the repatriation of profits. This not only affects ongoing projects but also undermines the viability of new ones.

Given these challenges, the IEA advocates for a forward-thinking strategy. It suggests that, in the long term, establishing robust local capital markets capable of providing financing in the local currency will be crucial for scaling up investments in clean energy projects across Africa.

This approach has the potential to strengthen the sustainability and resilience of clean energy initiatives on the continent, aligning with broader objectives of economic growth and environmental sustainability..
