Utafiti: Kulala bila nguo kunapunguza uwezekeno wa kupata kisukari

Utafiti mpya uliotolewa nchini Marekani, umebainisha kuwa watu wanaopenda kulala bila nguo wanapata faida nyingi ikiwamo ya kuwa na uwezekano mdogo wa kupata ugonjwa wa kisukari.

Ripoti hiyo ya utafiti iliyotolewa na Taasisi ya Kitaifa ya Usingizi (NSF), inaeleza umuhimu wa watu kulala bila nguo kuwa ni kuimarisha uhusiano kwenye ndoa na kupunguza kalori nyingi.

Wataalamu wa usingizi wanasema kwamba ni vizuri mtu akawa katika hali ya utulivu wakati wa usiku kwa kuwa joto la mwili linahitaji kuteremka hadi nyuzi 50 za kipimo cha Fahrenheart ili mtu aweze kulala.

"Joto la mwili huwa juu saa 5 usiku na kuwa chini saa 10 asubihi," anasema Mkurugeni wa Edinburg Sleep Centre, ambaye pia ni mwandishi wa Kitabu cha Sound Asleep, Dk Chris Idzikowski.

"Kama kitu chochote kitazuia joto lisishuke, ubongo utahakikisha unajua kinachoendelea, hii inamaanisha, utahangaika kupata usingizi au utakuwa na usingizi wa mang'amunga'amu," anasema mtaalamu huyo.

Ripoti hiyo inasema kuwa mtu anapolala bila nguo inakuwa rahisi kwa mwili kupoa na kuwezesha upatikanaji wa kiwango sahihi kinachohitajiwa na ubongo kufanya kazi.

Profesa Russell Foster, mtaalamu wa circadian neuroscience katika Chuo Kikuu cha Oxford, anathibitisha kuwa kulala bila nguo kunaboresha usingizi.

"Kama ulikuwa unavaa nguo nyingi za kulalalia, itakuwa vigumu kwako kupunguza joto. Kwa hiyo, punguza nguo unavyoweza," anasema.

Anasema kuwa ikiwa usingizi umekatishwa kwa sababu ya joto kali, haimaanishi kwamba utapata usingizi mdogo wakati wote, bali unaweza kupata usingizi wa kushtuka shtuka.

Usingizi mzuri ndiyo unaofaa kwa ajili ya kuimarisha mfumo wa kumbukumbu na uzalishaji wa homoni, kitendo ambacho ni muhimu kwa ukuaji wa seli na kuzifanyia marekebisho.

Kwa nini mwili unapoa wakati umelala?

Utafiti unasema kuwa siyo vizuri kuoga maji ya moto jioni wakati wa kwenda kulala, badala yake mtu anapaswa kupasha moto kigodo mikono na miguu yake. Hiyo ni kwa sababu ili joto la mwili lishuke hadi kufikia kiwango cha chini kinachochochea usingizi, mwili unatakiwa utoe jasho.

"Jambo hili linafanyika kwa kutuma damu kwenye mishipa karibu na ngozi- hasa kwenye mikono na miguu, ambako joto linapotea kwa njia ya ngozi," inasema ripoti hiyo.

Hata hivyo, kama Profesa Foster alivyoeleza, kama mikono na miguu yako ni baridi, mishipa ya damu karibu na ngozi itapunguza kasi ya damu kutembea katika harakati za kutafuta joto na kuzuia lisipotee.

"Hii ina maanisha kuwa joto lako la kawaida haliwezi kushuka kirahisi," inasema ripoti.

Taarifa hiyo inasema kwamba ndiyo maana watu wenye ugonjwa wa kuwa na mikono na miguu ya baridi sana (ugonjwa huo unawaathiri zaidi ya watu milioni 10 Uingereza, asilimia 10 wakiwa ni wanawake), ambao ndiyo wenye hatari zaidi ya kupata ugonjwa wa kukosa usingizi, ‘insomnia'.

Hali hiyo husababisha mishipa ya damu kusinyaa, kupunguza kasi ya damu kutembea, kwa hiyo ingawa watu wanaosikia mikono yao ni ya baridi sana, joto lao huwa juu sana.

Ripoti hiyo inaendelea kufafanua kuwa wazee wana kawaida ya kujisikia baridi usiku, labla kwa sababu matatizo ya mzunguko wa damu kwao ni kawaida.

"Wanawake ndiyo wenye hatari zaidi ya kupatwa na matatizo ya baridi mikononi na miguuni, hasa wakati fulani wanapokuwa kwenye hedhi.

Utafiti mwingine uliofanywa mwaka 2008 na Taasisi ya Netherland inayojishughulisha na Sayansi ya Neva, pia unaeleza uhusiano wa joto la mwili na kulala.

Kuna baadhi ya watu walijitolea kuvaa nguo zinazozuia mabadiliko ya joto la mwili, ili kuwaruhusu watafiti kuchunguza joto kwenye ngozi bila kuathiri kiwango cha kawaida cha joto mwilini.

Timu ya watafiti hao waligundua kuwa wakati joto kwenye ngozi linapopanda kwa nyuzi 0.4, watu waliokuwa wanafanyiwa utafiti walikuwa na uwezekano mdogo wa kuamka wakati wa usiku. Lilipojitokeza kundi la wazee kufanya majaribio kama hayo, matokeo yalishangaza. Joto lilipofikia nyuzi 0.4, lilikaribia kuwa mara mbili ya hali ya kawaida ya kulala, pia lilipunguza uwezekano wa kuamka mapema kwa asilimia 50 hadi nne.

"Joto kwenye ngozi lilipoongezeka lilisababisha mirija ya damu kupanuka, hivyo joto kupotea kwa urahisi zaidi. Waliongeza uwezo wa kulala kwa kuongeza joto na kuruhusu kasi yake kutembea kutoka katikati ya mwili," anasema Profesa Foster.

Kwa maneno mengine, ukitaka kulala kirahisi unahitaji kuwa na joto kali kiasi cha ambacho mishipa ya damu haiwezi kusinyaa, lakini siyo kuwa na joto kali mpaka mwili wako ukashindwa kupoa.

Namna ya kufanya

"Kuhakikisha kuwa joto lako la mwili linashuka vizuri, badala ya kuvaa soksi unapolala weka miguuni dumu la maji ya moto," anasema Dk Idzikowski.

"Soksi haziruhusu joto kupungua miguuni, badala yake utaishia tu kuungua. Chupa ya maji ya moto inafanya miguu yako kuwa ya moto, lakini itapoa au unaweza kuondoa," anasema.

Kisukari

Kwa mujibu wa utafiti kuhusu kisukari uliofanyika Marekani, wataalamu waligundua kuwa mtu akilala kwenye chumba chenye baridi anaweza kuongeza mafuta (brown fat) kwa watu wazima.

Vijana watano wenye afya nzuri walilala kwenye chumba chenye joto maalumu kwa miezi minne. Mwezi wa kwanza chumba kilikuwa na joto la nyuzi 24, baadaye lilishushwa hadi nyuzi 19, kisha likapandishwa hadi nyuzi 24 na mwezi wa mwisho ilipandishwa hadi nyuzi 27.

Vijana hao walikuwa wakila viwango sawa vya kalori na kuangalia namna insulini inavyofanya, kiasi gani kinahitajika ili kiwango cha sukari mwilini kiwe sawa, vyote vilikuwa vinapimwa kila siku.

Matokeo yalikuwa ya kushangaza. Baada ya wiki nne za kulala kwenye chumba chenye nyuzi joto 19, vijana hao walikuwa wameongeza mara mbili kiwango chao cha mafuta ya kahawia mwilini. Matokeo yalionyesha kuwa waliunguza kalori nyingi zaidi mchana wakati chumba chao cha kulala kilikuwa na baridi kali (ingawa si kiasi cha kupunguza uzito) na utendaji wa insulini nao uliimarika.

Mwandishi mkuu wa ripoti hiyo, Francesco Celi anasema kuwa utafiti umebainisha kuwa kutumia muda mrefu kulala kwenye chumba cha baridi kuwaweza kupunguza hatari ya kupata ugonjwa wa kisukari.

Profesa wa maendeleo ya saikolojia katika Chuo Kikuu cha Nattingham na mtaalamu wa mafuta ya kahawia, Michael Symonds, anasema kulala bila nguo kuna faida kubwa.

"Mafuta ya kahawia yanaweza kuzalisha joto mwilini mara 300 kuliko kuliko kiungo kingine chochote mwilini, inamaanisha kama ukiacha iendelee hivyo kwa muda mrefu ungeweza kupunguza nguvu ya ziada," alisema.

Aliongeza: "Kwa hiyo chochote unachoweza kufanya kuchochea, kama vile kupunguza ‘thermostat' na kulala kwenye baridi, linaweza kuwa jambo la faida sana."

Hata hivyo, mtaalamu huyo anaonya kuwa joto kwenye chumba lisiwe chini ya kiwango ambalo hutajisikia huru, vinginevyo utashindwa kulala.

Anaendelea kusema kuwa watu wanaosikia joto kali usiku na wanapenda kulala bila nguo, wanaweza kuwa na kiwango kikubwa cha mafuta ya kahawia, ambayo yanasababisha mtu ajisikie joto.

When it comes to our bed and being naked, most of us will only slip out of our pajamas and into our birthday suit when were turning up the heat in the bedroom. After a bit of getting down under the sheets, followed by canoodling, we grab the closest clothes and cover up, but experts say this is a bad habit. Although several scientific studies stress our sleepwear can negatively affect our quality of sleep, and overall health, only 10 percent of Americans make it a habit to sleep nude. Sleeping naked provides several health benefits for our body, ranging from an improved hormonal balance and mood to better sex.

1. Better and Deeper Sleep
Getting a good nights sleep is easier said than done for most of us who are light sleepers, toss and turn throughout the night, or are simply too busy that we barely sleep. Achieving the optimal amount of sleep is contingent on the room temperature and overall sleeping environment. Optimal temperature for restorative sleep is between 60 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

A 2008 study published in the journal Brain found when the sleeping environment has a temperature that fits this parameter, it helps the bodys core temperature to drop in preparation for sleep. If were too hot, this will prevent the bodys core temperature to reach the optimal parameters, which can lead to restlessness, and even insomnia. Sleeping naked will prevent the body from overheating, and will therefore lead to a better nights sleep.


2. Look Forever Young
The term beauty rest, is not just a myth. Maintaining a room temperature that is no higher than 70 degrees while we sleep allows the anti-aging hormones melatonin and the growth hormone to function properly. A sleep environment that is too hot will not allow the body to naturally cool itself and disrupts the release of these hormones. Sleeping in complete darkness stimulates the release of melatonin, which cools the body, and then the growth hormone is released. Hormones will work better at lower temperatures and will allow the body to regenerate resulting better hair and skin. A 2012 study published in the journal Sleep found getting deep, restorative sleep can improve athletic performance with the release of the growth hormone.

3. Lose Weight
A good nights sleep is the best way to fight stress, which causes belly fat. At night, the production of the growth hormone increases while cortisol the stress hormone decreases. It is during 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. when our body is resting, which means cortisol should be at its lowest. In the morning, cortisol levels reach their highest point to get us energized by the time we get out of bed. If we dont get a good nights rest, we tend to wake up with abnormally high cortisol levels that can trigger our appetite for comfort foods and lead to overeating.

4. Better Sex
Sleeping in the nude with your partner can help stimulate the release of the love hormone oxytocin. The skin-to-skin touching will increase a sexual responsiveness and orgasm, while counteracting stress and depression through fighting off the effects of cortisol and blood pressure. "When you and your partner both sleep naked, the skin-to-skin contact will release the feel-good hormone," Dr. Fran Walfish, psychotherapist and author, The Self-Aware Parent, told Medical Daily. "Even further, you may have more sex and we all know orgasms are Mother Nature's best answer to insomnia...better than bottled milk and Ambien!" A recent study conducted by Cotton USA found sleeping naked actually encourages physical and emotional intimacy between couples, leading to happier relationships.


5. Protects Your Vagina
Ladies, when it comes to our lady parts, its always best to be safe than sorry. Many women express fear over sleeping naked and its effect on the vagina, deeming it unsanitary. Bacteria thrive in moist, warm environments, especially in women prone to vaginal infections. Nicole Prause, an Associate Research Scientist at the University of California Los Angeles, told Medical Daily, leeping naked would reduce the ability of those (always-present) bacteria to overwhelm the normal healthy vaginal flora.

The vagina will get more ventilation, increasing its ability to stay dry and reducing the probability of fungal infection. For men, sleeping naked has been found to increase fertility by keeping the testes at a reasonable temperature. It can also retain the sperm quality, too.

Its time to slip into your birthday suit and sleep your way to good health.
