1. The FBI or Federal Bureau of
Investigation is the main federal
law enforcement agency in the
United States. They have the
largest jurisdiction of any federal
law enforcement agency. They
operate under the U.S.
Department of Justice and are
responsible for enforcing Federal
law. Their main priorities are
prevention of terrorism within the
US, and domestic law
enforcement. They often provide
assistance for state and local
criminal investigations where
their expertise or resources are
needed. They have an
international presence and often
cooperate with law enforcement
agencies of other countries. They
are also a member of the United
States' Intelligence Community
due to their close monitoring of
organized criminal activity within
the United States.
2. The CIA or Central Intelligence
Agency is also a member of the
U.S. Intelligence Community.
They are NOT a law enforcement
agency and they only operate
outside of the United States.
They work closely with the U.S.
State Department to gather
intelligence(significant
information) about international
events. Their main focus is
identifying terror groups and
threats before an attack is made.
It's common for intelligence
agencies to share information
with intelligence and law
enforcement agencies in allied
nations. Ie: Intelligence from the
CIA indicates a terrorist attack in
London. The CIA shares that intel
with MI-5 (British version of
FBI). The CIA does have a
paramilitary branch called the
Special Operations Group or SOG.
They support intelligence
operations through covert
military actions. IE: arming
rebels, Operation Geronimo (seal
team 6 killing Osama Bin Laden),
etc. They're basically reporters
with guns and drones.
