Tanesco, Kibo to meet over coal power deal
The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) will convene a work session for the power purchase agreement (PPA) task team for Kibo Mining’s Mbeya coalto- power project (MCPP) tomorrow.

The mining company said in a statement last week that it has received confirmation from TANESCO that a work session for the full PPA task team has been scheduled for Tuesday this week to finalise work on key deliverables stipulated under the MoU.
Representatives from Kibo and Tanesco will attend the session, which is aimed at finalising work on the various key deliverables stipulated under the MCPP memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The meeting will also be used to review the overall progress and remaining deliverables and milestones stipulated in the MCPP MoU and discuss and agree steps and measures, where necessary, to ensure that the MoU timeline and action plan are executed in accordance with what has been agreed.
“We are very pleased with the cooperation and commitment from Tanesco in advancing the PPA process since signing the MoU, despite extraordinary challenges experienced by Tanesco over the past three months, in particular,” Kibo CEO Louis Coetzee is quoted as saying in a statement.
Kibo Mining PLC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company, TANESCO, in February this year with regards to a Power Purchase Agreement for power that will be produced from Kibo’s 300MW Mbeya coalto- power project.
Kibo said the meeting will also review the overall progress and remaining deliverables under the MoU and discuss measures to ensure that the timeline and action plan is executed in line with what has been agreed.
“This work session of the full PPA task team follows a period of work by the task team that commenced immediately after signing of the MoU and during which we expect to bring their efforts together in positive and productive results in respect of the agreed deliverables stated in the PPA MoU.”

Thats what it means to have an online presence, a website can be accessrd from anywhere there is internet. But I've been seeing this news circulate since last week like its a new invension or something, its just a website connected to a marchant paying API I.e Visa, MasterCard, PayPal. ... Any airline flying beyond its borders is required to have online booking

Dangote Cement switching to run on Tanzanian gas

Tanzania’s largest cement producer, Dangote Cement Industries, has announced it is poised to switch its factory in Mtwara from diesel to gas.
The move is a result of talks in early 2016 with Tanzania’s president, John Magufuli, to source gas from local fields.
The 3 mtpa plant has recently suspended operations for two weeks to allow for the conversion to take place.
The company is also set to open a $90 million gas-fired power station that will use local supplies, Agence Ecofin has reported.

Siemens seeks to invest in power sector
- • A Siemens’s senior official revealed the investment plan mid last month during a strategic partnership meeting the Executive Director of Tanzania Investment Centre in Dar es Salaam
The South Africa based did not make known the value of the investment but said it was prepared for the grand capital project, which will be a huge boost to the fifth government’s endeavour to diversify the country’s energy mix.
The commitment is also a big shot in the arm of the administration’s industrialization agenda, which is pivotal to the aspiration to make Tanzania a middle-income economy by mid next decade. It equally augurs well for efforts to increase access to electricity, which despite rising by 21 per cent during 2006 – 2016 remains low at 30 per cent.
A Siemens’s senior official revealed the investment plan mid last month during a strategic partnership meeting the Executive Director of Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), Geoffrey Mwambe, in Dar es Salaam. Mwambe (pictured) said TIC will soon sit down with the company to map out the strategy to assist facilitation and implementation of the project.
“Siemens is prepared for this initiative and we can structure any type of proposal, including 100 per cent financing of the project,” Stephan Luyt, the South Africa Regional Account Manager of the company said without giving the timeline for implementing the project.
Excited by the Siemens news, Mwambe said the initiative will be supported by the government and the investment fast tracked because of its importance in industrializing the economy. According to him, an extensive power supply system is a fundamental pre-requisite for economic growth and overall national development.
“We believe that this project will be very crucial in improving sectors like energy and manufacturing which will automatically support our industrialization agenda and modernization of the agricultural sector,” he noted.
Currently the country's installed electric power capacity from all sources stands at 1,585MW against the demand of about 1,400MW. Tanzania’s demand for energy is growing by 10 per cent every year because of accelerating investments in mining and industry, and an increase in consumption by connected users and newly connected households.
Energy Sector Reform Strategy and Roadmap covering 2014–2025 aims to increase the country’s installed power capacity from current levels to at least 10, 000 MW by 2025 with a gas and renewable sources playing a decisive role.
The African Development Bank says opportunities for new power generation are abundant: generation potential from hydro (4.7 GW), coal (1.9 billion tonnes), geothermal (650 MW), gas (55 trillion cubic feet) and renewables (wind and solar).

WB backs up railway, ports projects
THE World Bank has expressed its intention to assist Tanzania in the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Isaka- Rusumo section and Rwanda’s section from Rusumo border to Kigali, along with other transport infrastructure such as roads to help promote business and social welfare as a whole.

This was revealed in Washington DC by Minister for Finance and Planning, Dr Philip Mpango, after discussions with the institution’s experts. Dr Mpango said other regional projects that the institution had shown interest to support include environment and rehabilitation of Lake Victoria ports of Mwanza, Musoma, as well as the ones in Lake Tanganyika, to facilitate transportation to Burundi and Congo.
“These regional and national projects that the World Bank plans to implement with the government of Tanzania in the next financial year will ensure that they are sustainable as they affect all countries surrounding the two lakes,” he said. He further explained that it was similarly important to effect environmental pollution control for the people in the region as well as Tanzania to continue to benefit from the major lakes.
In addition, he said the World Bank had also expressed its intention to finance the Ruhuji power project in the Rufiji River, which is expected to produce 300 megawatts. “Electricity is very important for industrial development because an industrial economy cannot grow without reliable power supply,” the minister said. Furthermore, the institution had agreed to assist Tanzania to provide training on project analysis to spare the government getting into more big debts.
The minister explained that lack of effectiveness in analysing projects financed by mortgage loans would lead to a debt burden for the country, and so, Tanzania would ensure all projects were analysed properly.
