Ghana failed to take advantage of a fading, starless United States of America team last night. The Black Stars paid for their lapses in concentration, starting in the very first minute of the match, when Clint Dempsey taught the Africans effective skill and clinical shooting all in one, swift, deadly move. It was as devastating as a first round knockout punch in a heavyweight boxing fight. The USA couldn't wait any longer to gain revenge after Ghana had sent them home in the last two World Cups.

Then after Andre Ayew's late equaliser, the Africans were admirably looking for the winner, but had forgotten they also had to be extremely careful to man-mark John Brooks at the back. Even though the USA did very little in the second half, it's not the amount of times you huff and puff to blow the house down. It's your precision in finishing that counts, as the USA caught their opponents 'with their pants down'.

I've been very impressed with the United States preparation and progress over the years, but I felt that they played better in South Africa 2010. They were there for the taking last night. As I feared, Ghana and Nigeria were over-confident going into yesterday, looking at the names of their opponents, and expecting to beat what on paper looked like the easiest matches in their groups.

Unprepared Nigeria lacked ideas

Before the game I was shocked that Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi admitted that he knew nothing about Iran. This was evident the way the Super Eagles lacked ideas as to how to breakdown Iran's parked bus. With Keshi one of the leading candidates for the Bafana Bafana job, you have to question his preparation methods at the highest level.

So do you blame the coach or the player's for their poor decision making? Both. The players rushed into their attacks, but when faced with a packed defence you need to be patient and pass it around before working an opening. What was most disappointing is that the Super Eagles had repeatedly lost possession high up the field, before they could even ask questions at Iran.

Some might question the coach's team selection. Nevertheless Keshi's Nigeria lacks high individual quality, but makes up for that with an excellent team ethic. However, that attribute can be cancelled out when your opposition also plays as a strong unit. In this case the Super Eagles required pure quality to break down an organised Iran side, and the required quality was desperately lacking.

Ghana's square pegs in tight, round holes

As for Ghana, they played as well as they usually do, and finished as badly as they usually do. This is a team that believes they should do better than reaching the quarter-finals of South Africa 2010. Yet, they haven't solved their poor shooting skills for over a decade, which I've been writing home about from Germany 2006. The Black Stars should have realised that by 2010, when they failed to score a goal from open play during the entire group stage. Yet the likes of Asamoah Gyan carry themselves as if they are world stars.

Gyan is a real handful in an Andy Carroll type of way. Yes, they sometimes score stunners, but you can't always force your way into goal with power. You need finesse, and Ghana needs players who are able to open up the opposition with incisive moves between the lines with precision passes.

Kevin Prince Boateng would have improved the team in this department, while the injury of Majeed Waris was a sore blow upfront. One of the best, clinical finishers in the world, Mario Balotelli is proof that Ghanaians can do it, but with the right training. In the Black Stars midfield they boast top players in the best leagues, but not so in the striking department and it shows.

I'm not saying they can't progress without a sharp shooter now, but they're making the task that much harder by forcing square pegs into round holes. No matter how hard you try to smash it into that goal, you're not going to score enough against well organised, tight defenses.

This approach also leads to inaccuracy when you're under pressure. While chasing and dominating the game, Ghana senselessly wasted it with long range shots. That tactic is for teams who feed on scraps, but it was the USA who were happy to sit back and wait. They were even happier watching Ghana blast nearly all their opportunities high into the stands.

Their Brazilian dreams are not over yet, but it's only a matter of time. In reality Ghana and Nigeria should realise that they have much more work to do to become a real force on the world stage.
