Syria's Factions
Here's an overview of all the factions in this renewed Syrian conflict. As usual it is extremely confusing and complex. I've probably missed out some factions but these are the main ones you'll hear about in the latest conflict.
Simplified version is:
SAA - Bashars Army
SDF - Kudish Army
HTS - Idlib Rebels
SNA - All the rebels
Government Forces:
🇸🇾 Syrian Arab Army (SAA) – Main military force of the Syrian government.
🇸🇾 National Defense Forces (NDF) – Pro-government militias supporting the SAA.
🇱🇧 Hezbollah
🇦🇫 Fatimiyoun – Afghan Shia fighters.
🇵🇰 Zainebiyoun – Pakistani Shia fighters.
🇮🇷 Iranian IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps)
🇷🇺 Russia - Mainly air support, equipment and logistics.
Kurdish Forces:
🇸🇾 Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) – Kurdish-led coalition controlling northeast Syria.
🇹🇷 People’s Protection Units (YPG) – Kurdish militia, core component of the SDF.
🇸🇾 Women's Protection Units (YPJ) – All-female Kurdish militia unit within the YPG.
🇹🇷 Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) – Kurdish militant group mainly active in Turkey and Iraq but with influence in Syria.
Rebel Groups:
🇸🇾 Syrian National Army (SNA) – Turkish-backed coalition of various rebel groups, incorporating:
🇸🇾 Free Syrian Army (FSA) – The original umbrella term for opposition factions, now largely part of the SNA.
🇸🇾 Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) – Islamist group dominating northwestern Syria.
HTS is the collection and rebranding of originally Al-Qaeda affiliated groups:
🇸🇾 Jabhat al-Nusra
🇸🇾 Jund al-Aqsa
🇸🇾 Jabhat Fatah al-Sham
🇸🇾 Fatah al-Mubin Operations Room – A coalition of factions, including HTS, formed to coordinate military efforts in northwestern Syria, especially around Idlib.
🇨🇳 Turkistan Islamic Party in Syria (TIP)
🇹🇷 Turkey - Mainly air support, equipment and logistics.
