Facts
Dar Port:
i) Current capacity of Dar port is 450,000 teus but is handling about 670,00 teus annually
ii)Current expansion to 600,000 teus will still leave about 80,000 teus excess to handle, so it will still be small.
iii) Infrastructure surrounding the port is underdeveloped leading to inefficiencies bringing total throughput to less than global average.
iv) The clearing time for cargo is 82 hours due to paperwork and red tape.
v) The port is not ranked among the top 10.
vi) The port currently only handles less than 60% of what Mombasa port handles
Mombasa port:
i) Current capacity is 1.25 million teus but is handling 1.425 million teus annually with 7-10% growth annually
ii) Current construction of phase 1 second container terminal will increase capacity by 550,000 teus by end of 2020, phase 2 expansion of second container terminal will increase capacity by 600,000 teus by 2022.
iii) With a well developed surrounding infrastructure sgr, large highways and easy connectivity to the hinterland current throughput of the port is 2.5 million teus annually ie Port capacity is 1.25 million teus annually but can be able to output 2.5 million teus annually because of surrounding infrastructure. Currently 14 cargo trains a day with double stack wagons, trucks have the expanded dongo kundu highway that bypasses mombasa city reducing truck transit time.
iv) Investments in technology have reduced the number of days taken to clear cargo to 24 hours and 100% ex-hook railage has greatly improved turnaround time for mega ships to 1 day.
v) The port is currently ranked among the top 5 ports in africa and by 2022 will actually have a capacity of 2.5 million teus once all expansion is completed.
