Lamu port is a deep sea port that will be receiving bigger post-panamax vessels that currently cannot dock at Kilindini harbour in Mombasa. Since these vessels cannot dock at the beach, the berth are constructed in a deeper part of the bay.
Hence they need to create piles that are dug deep into the bay. Behind the piles, they will need to draw out the water and backfill with massive rocks/stones/sand etc. In a sense they are reclaiming land from the sea just like what happened with the SGR terminal where cargo is offloaded directly to the rail tracks.
