We created the first EAC in 1967.
We've heard a longer time to rethink, improve and perfect.

If you are waiting for countries to have an equal amount of wealth, you will wait forever because the gap between Kenya and Tazania GDP widens every year.
The only way European countries are able to compete in the world today, with big blocks like USA and China is because of the EU.

They have a greater leverage negotiating and protecting themselves from cheap imports. They have a bigger vehicle for their exports.

Right now for individual African countries to trade with other countries, you need individual deals. How is it possible for any African country to make deals individually with almost all other countries on earth?
Even UK is struggling with this post-brexit.

Europe is now Europe's biggest trade partner. In that EU member countries export more to the EU than to the rest of the world.

Here in Africa and particularly East Africa, you hear us boasting of how much Netherlands or Pakistan is our largest trading partner.

Also, in terms of border controls, don't deceive yourself that Tanzania is very desirable for greener pastures. If we were bordering South Africa, I would understand why they don't want open borders.
Open borders work in the UK because the member countries are all rich in the own way. The GDP per capitas may be different, but they are all high.
Here in EAC, they are all low.

The problem is your supreme leader's thinking, similar to Trump's, that all problems arise from immigrants. While the truth is anything but.
USA spends billions fighting terrorism, yet terrorism deaths in the US are almost zero. Gun violence on the other hand claim more than 10,000 lives a year.

First of all, EU was not created in 1993. EU was created by treaty signed in 1951 after two major wars they decided to hold on peace by creating union of likely minded and was aimed at six countries aligned with US. East Europe was not part of this for good reason because they were aligned themselves with Russia. EU has been adding layers after layers on cooperation even inviting East European countries to join the union. This has created tension on the union because Western countries has been bailing-out Eastern European countries because East Europe has been under develops for years. Western are subsidized life style of the east in return they are taking jobs from the west and exporting law skilled labour to the west. The west are hurting with pressures being felt on public services, school, hospital, housing, security etc.

It seems to me you've no knowledge how EU works, EU doesn't go out to negotiate trade deals without concession of every member state and every region within individual state. I'll give an example, 2016 little region in Belgium blocked huge trade deal between EU and Canada, why? Because they could and they have interest with their products. UK has to satisfy the whole 27 members state in EU plus their regions to get a deal. Union doesn't guarantee you a good deal, I mean we are in union today (EAC), and we still can't get a good deal with EU, the deal that will protect jobs here in EAC. Remember even though you on the union, you're still an individual country with individual interests. Not all states in USA agree with external trade deal, and they are not binded by it if they didn't sign for.
When it comes to border control, I didn't say that Tanzania border are secured, but at least you don't get mass illegal migrate going to Kenya originating from Tanzania.
