Hiddink: "Nothing new" on Chelsea role

Guus Hiddink has refused to be drawn on reports he will take on a permanent role as Chelsea boss while Dutch compatriot Dick Advocaat steps into his role as Russia coach.

Yet the 62-year-old boss, currently set to do both roles until the end of the current season, hardly closed the door on the speculation either by saying: "If there is something new I will announce it."

Stopping short of denying the morning's run of rumours in the British press, he continued in a press conference held at Chelsea's Cobhahm training ground: "There is nothing new. It is not an everyday issue and we stick to what we have said recently.

"I have settled in quickly. But I knew a bit of Premier League, English football and this club, and I am the kind of person who tries to adapt as soon as possible.

"This is high-level football and we have to keep up with the demands for this. I was very well received and have been backed up by all the departments assisting the first team. I am also very happy with the contribution of Ray Wilkins."

"So far I am very happy with the way we are working," added the Dutchman. "In my previous club, players were fined for being late for training and at the end of the season, we donated that money to a charity.

"It is standard to a club, especially a big club, that everyone is living up to a normal discipline. It is a normal discipline when you work at a big club and also a small club. It is nothing I have invented."

Hiddink's post-match assessment of Chelsea after their 1-0 victory over Juventus was that they tired quickly in the second half. However, after studying data from their wins over Aston Villa and Juventus, the Dutchman has been forced into a re-think.

"We like to control the whole game," he added. "The first reaction is that the physical part is not at the required level. That is the easiest thing to look for. But I am backed up by data that this is not totally true.

"I have studied the last two games and when we have gone 1-0 up we have a tendency to drop back as a team and the gap between the defence, midfield and attack is too big.

"I have seen the figures and we ran more in the second half than in the first against Juve, but tactically we can improve and play a little bit more as a whole and reduce the spaces in between.

"That is more or less the conclusion I have made after these two games." Hiddink, whose side face Wigan at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, was typically precise when it came to the question of the title run-in.

Chelsea are 10 points behind leaders Manchester United and - as well as hoping that Sir Alex Ferguson's side drop points - Hiddink conceded that to cash in on any slip-up, the Blues must win all their remaining league games.

"If we are focusing on the title then we have to win everything that is true," said Hiddink. "But Manchester United have to drop points as well and they are a very stable squad. It is difficult. But, yes, we have to win everything."

Kama ni kweli Guus anataka kubaki klabuni itakuwa ni vizuri, kwa kiasi kikubwa atakuwa ametusaidia kuachanan na mawazo ya kutafuta mbadala wake mwishoni mwa msimu huu.

CHELSEA vs WIGAN

All the best vijana, hasa tukizingatia leo tupo ktk dimba la nyumbani ninahakika tutaibuka na ushindi mnono.

Chelsea 2 - Wigan Athletic 1

John Terry became the highest scoring defender in Chelsea history and Frank Lampard joined him as a hero with a 90th minute winner.

A superbly taken first-half strike by the captain for long looked to be enough for three points but then with dark shades of last season's damaging home draw against Steve Bruce's side, Wigan equalised late in the game.

Again Chelsea appeared to be paying a big price for many missed opportunities, combined with a resolute defensive display by the oft-maligned Titus Bramble, but Lampard and colleagues were not to be denied as he headed in his own milestone goal, joining 1930s centre-forward George Mills as our sixth all-time scorer with 125 goals.

On a day when Terry added another page to his epic Chelsea story, surpassing the 34 goals of 1950s right-back Peter Sillett, Guus Hiddink had shown faith in a new homegrown young defender in his team selection, giving 21-year-old Michael Mancienne the nod over Paulo Ferreira, Branislav Ivanovic and Juliano Belletti as suspended José Bosingwa's replacement at right-back.

That was the one change to the chosen 11 from the Champions League selection on Wednesday. Ricardo Quaresma, who had been Euro-tied versus Juventus, was back on the bench.

When action commenced, Anelka and Drogba almost combined to good effect in the sixth minute, an outstretched leg from Boyce preventing the Ivorian's shot.

Two minutes later, Alex was booked for a late lunge on Scharner, the Wigan player who was positioned in behind lone striker Zaki with instructions to make life difficult for Mikel.

Wigan were by no means bound to their own half in these early stages and won three corners by the 15 minute mark, one after Alex had been nutmegged by Melchiot.

Then on 17 minutes they broke clear through Scharner after a pass that had found a way through a gap between Mikel and Alex. The shot was low and tipped past the post by Cech at full stretch.

A minute later Zaki manoeuvred past Terry 10 yards inside the Chelsea half and was pulled down. A booking for the skipper. The centre-backs were having a difficult start to this match.

Full-back Ashley Cole acquitted himself rather better soon after, clearing Bramble's header from a corner off the line with fast reactions. A follow-up shot was initially saved by Cech and then blocked on the line by the back of Terry.

Chelsea had suffered enough of this pressure! In the space of a minute Drogba and Mikel had fierce shots, one deflected behind by Bramble, the other well-saved by Kirkland.

N'Zogbia became Wigan's first booking for a late lunge on Mikel.

On 24 minutes came Terry's historic goal. The captain was up from a set-piece which in the breakdown found its way to Lampard. Out on the left, the vice-captain chipped into a packed box and Boyce cleared, but only as far as the captain who with all the skill of a leading striker, volleyed left-footed into the back of the net via a slight touch off Boyce.

The first left-footed volleyed goal of his career? The celebration that followed suggested so!

Alex could have made it a double of centre-back goals to add to the pair of bookings as the ball made its way through a gap but his far-post shot was saved by the keeper.

Seconds later, Cattermole earned Wigan's second booking for a sliding foul on Mikel.

Anelka headed a 30th minute Lampard corner over before Chelsea deserved to have doubled the lead after a swift break in what was becoming an entertaining game.

Anelka initially whipped the ball away from Cattermole and when it was worked out to Lampard, he cut inside the retreating Wigan midfielder and was denied by a very good one-handed stop by Kirkland.

The ball was still loose and was headed on-target by Ballack, only for Bramble to block on the line. However the flag was up and Ballack would have been denied his goal by an offside ruling anyway.

Terry had the chance of a second goal on 40 minutes, a tough chance with a crowd in front of him, and he curled his shot over.

Drogba smashed a free-kick well off-target to complete a half that had started with some concern for the Blues, but was now progressing well.

John Terry was enjoying himself this afternoon. Soon after the restart he found himself cordoned off by Wigan bodies near the touchline and salvaged the situation by backheeling to Lampard through the legs of Melchiot.

On 49 minutes, it was a Wigan player's turn to excel - Bramble pulling off an acrobatic goal line clearance after Drogba had left Kirkland for dead.

Anelka then did well to spark an attack that ended with Lampard's squared pass just in front of a sliding Kalou.

The younger of our Ivorians was having one of his quieter games of late, the same couldn't be said for his elder. One Drogba rampage shrugged off two defenders before a third's desperate tackle blocked the shot.

Kalou came off to applause on 75 minutes, his replacement Belletti who stayed wide but played a little deeper.

Mancienne, whose full home debut had been unspectacular but safe, did err a minute later in bringing down N'Zogbia in a dangerous position to earn a booking. Chelsea survived the free-kick, as they did Scharner heading a presentable chance wide and Zaki shooting wide after he was gifted possession as the final 10 minutes approached.

Last season's late equaliser here by Wigan must have been crossing a few supporters' minds.

Mancienne was replaced by Quaresma on 81 minutes, Belletti now moving to right-back, but before the change could settle down, Wigan equalised with an attack down our right.

It was full-back Figueroa who played the ball across low and Kapo, at the near-post, slid to reach it ahead of Alex and turn it past Cech at the near post.

The game drifted on, Chelsea began to play hopeful high balls, and the only person laughing was Alex Ferguson with Liverpool losing at Middlesbrough while his team were out of Premier League action.

However on the occasion Chelsea had something in reserve. The stoppage time board had just gone up as Belletti's lofted ball into the box was nodded on by Ballack and Lampard, marked by former Blue Mario Melchiot, was able to loop his header over Kirkland and into the Matthew Harding End net.

Stamford Bridge was smiling once again as Chelsea went second on goal difference thanks to a fourth straight win since the decision to change manager.

Portsmouth 0 - 1 Chelsea

Drogba leaves it late

Didier Drogba kept Chelsea's faint title hopes alive with a late winner to secure a 1-0 victory against Portsmouth at a rain-soaked Fratton Park.

The Ivory Coast international pounced to convert a low cross from Jose Bosingwa to hand interim coach Guus Hiddink his fourth straight win as Chelsea boss.

It leaves them four points behind leaders Manchester United who still have two games in hand on the Blues.

But Chelsea were made to battle all the way by Pompey who remain just two points off the relegation places at the foot of the Barclays Premier League.

The home side had Chelsea rocking from the off when a free-kick from Glen Johnson provided Hermann Hreidarsson with a clear chance but his effort from eight yards was deflected wide.

The game was being played in atrocious conditions with rain sweeping down onto the Fratton Park playing surface.

The pitch was extremely slippery and made ball control difficult for both sets of players.

In the 16th minute, Chelsea should have taken the lead but Drogba was inches away from putting the finishing touches to a drilled cross from Ashley Cole.

The Ivorian flung himself at the ball but missed it by inches at the far post.

Moments later a clever ball by Frank Lampard put Drogba through but the Chelsea striker's shot was charged down by the onrushing David James.

Chelsea continued to have the better of the exchanges and in the 21st minute Florent Malouda flashed an angled 20-yard drive beyond the far upright.

Seconds later Chelsea were unable to take advantage of an error by James. The Pompey goalkeeper allowed a cross from Malouda to slip out of his grasp in the wet conditions but Pompey's Sean Davies cleared for a corner.

The Blues had goalkeeper Petr Cech to thank for keeping the scoreline level in the 28th minute when he dived to his right to keep out a powerful low drive from Davis.

A foul by John Terry on Peter Crouch on the edge of the penalty area brought Pompey a free-kick but Johnson smashed his effort straight into Chelsea's defensive wall.

James failed to hold Lampard's 20-yard drive in the 34th minute but again Chelsea were unable to make the most of it as the ball bounced out of his hands.

Chelsea were now beginning to assert some consistent pressure for the first time in the game but the conditions were preventing them from playing the neat passing game they rely on.

Long passes through the middle for Drogba to chase also had little effect with the ball skidding off the surface and out of play on numerous occasions.

Three minutes before the break a goalmouth scramble from a Pompey corner ended in relief for the visitors when Cech pounced to grab the ball inside the six-yard box.

Chelsea almost broke the deadlock in injury time but Michael Ballack's header was just over the bar.

In the 59th minute Chelsea had Cech to thank again as a header from Crouch put David Nugent clear but the Pompey striker's shot was pushed away by the Czech Republic keeper.

Chelsea made two quick changes with Ricardo Quaresma replacing Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel making way for Juliano Belletti.

Both sides had increased the tempo but had little luck in the worsening conditions.

A shot from Belletti was well-held by James as it skidded across the turf.

The Blues remained in overall control though and in the 66th minute a cross from Quaresma was headed just over by Drogba who managed to get ahead of Sol Campbell.

Quaresma was providing an excellent service from the right flank and another cross had to be cut-out by Campbell as Drogba lurked inside the six-yard box.

Portsmouth had become penned in their own half and Davis presented the Blues with a free-kick opportunity in the 68th minute when he brought down Lampard.

Lampard, normally deadly from 20 yards, sent the free-kick into the ball and Campbell's clearance sent Crouch racing clear into the Chelsea half.

The England striker crossed for Niko Kranjcar but the Pompey midfielder sent his effort just wide.

But Ivorian Drogba settled the contest when he drilled home a cross from Bosingwa with 11 minutes remaining.

# Guus pleased to see players have guts

Guus Hiddink celebrated his fourth straight win as Chelsea's interim coach by insisting that the desire for success within the squad is driving them on to try to catch Manchester United.

"What is good in this team, is that they react when there are difficulties,'' said Hiddink. "Many players react in a way I normally don't like but this team is not happy when things are not going well and they make an extra effort to get their rewards.

"I notice there is a desire to have success and we have some key players who are demanding a lot from themselves and also from the other ones, which is key for big players with a big status.

"They challenge each other and it is very open. It shows the team is not fed-up and has desire.

"In difficult circumstances we are satisfied with a win. It was a tough win. The first half was equal and we tried to push on in the second half because we have to win if we want to put pressure on the number one team in the league.

"It didn't happen until late in the game but we have to admit we are very happy. Petr Cech, at the end, when they played all or nothing, made one or two fine saves.

"It was very important to get three points because if we want to keep up the pressure, we have to win. United have games in hand and they have a buffer. They are an experienced team but that is why it is good that we keep on winning.

"It keeps the pressure on. It is good for everyone in this championship to keep the pressure on the number one team.''

Drogba's season at Chelsea has been hampered by injury, suspension and a personality clash with former boss Luiz Felipe Scolari.

He was axed by the former coach after their 3-0 hammering at Old Trafford in January but Hiddink says he has seen nothing wrong with his attitude since taking charge.

Drogba ran to the bench to celebrate his goal and Hiddink added: "He is very happy with his goal. He knows he has not scored many goals this season.

"It gets rid of a bit of tension. When a player is playing in that position and not scoring, then it comes to such an emotional explosion.

"If you are a striker you like to score. They live to score and to assist.''

Portsmouth's caretaker boss Paul Hart lost his first game in charge since taking control from the sacked Tony Adams to leave Pompey still fighting to avoid relegation.

But his disappointment was tempered with knowledge that he has been appointed as manager until the end of the season.

Hart declared: "It is definitely a disappointing result but I thought it was a tremendous performance. We had a strategy and the boys kept to it. We created chances on the back of that but against the top teams you have to stick them away.

"I think we could have won but two saves by Cech were outstanding. I thought we deserved at least a point. There are a lot of disappointed players in the dressing room but they know they put in a performance that merited a little bit more.

"It is how we respond to that now. We have a difficult period of the season to come. We can take heart from the way we played.''

Hart admitted he was very pleased the board had given him the job until the end of the season as it means he and assistant Brian Kidd and focus even more on keeping them in the top flight.

"I am very pleased,'' said Hart. "I think it is good for all concerned the club and the players, because there has been a decision made and we can plan a little bit further on now.

"Hopefully we can do what the job is about and that is to stay in this division. It has only been three games but in those games the players have shown magnificent determination and response.

"If we maintain that spirit we will be a very difficult to beat.''

Ashley Cole in "drunk and disorderly" arrest

Chelsea and England footballer Ashley Cole was arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning for being drunk and disorderly following a Chelsea charity party at The Armani Store.

Reports claim the left-back swore at police after leaving the Collection nightclub on Brompton Road, South Kensington, leading to his arrest. He was issued with a fixed penalty notice of £80.

The 28-year-old, husband of Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole, was arrested on Brompton Road at about 2.15am on Thursday. Earlier that night he had been attending an event for Chelsea's charity partners CLIC Sargent and Right To Play at The Armani Store, also on Brompton Road.

While Cole was partying the night away, his wife was midway through a charity climb for Comic Relief which will see her scale the 15,000 feet to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro along with Chris Moyles, Alesha Dixon, Fearne Cotton, Kimberley Walsh, Denise Van Outen, Gary Barlow, Ben Shephard and Ronan Keating.

Cheryl was suffering from altitude sickness during the trek on Wedesday.A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We can confirm a 28-year-old man was arrested at approximately 2.15am in Brompton Road on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

"He was taken to a central London police station where he was issued with a fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly and released shortly after 5.30am."

A member of staff at the Collection nightclub in Brompton Road said she was not able to comment on reports Cole was arrested when he swore at police after emerging from the club.

The Collection, which opened in 1997, became a favourite on the west London celebrity scene after George Michael threw a birthday party there following his arrest in a Beverly Hills public toilet.

Before his arrest, Cole was pictured at a nearby charity event with former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips.

Cole joined Chelsea's first-team squad and more than 300 charity workers, celebrities and supporters for the second annual Chelsea Football Club and Armani charity fundraiser.

"Children from Chelsea's two official charity partners, Clic Sargent and Right To Play, joined the players at the Armani Store on Brompton Road where they pitted their talents against the team on Scalextric, computer games, table football and pool,'' according to a statement on the club's website.

"Funds were raised for the two charities via an auction that was auctioneered by Chelsea and England captain John Terry.

"Other guests included former Formula One supremo Eddie Jordan, Graeme Le Saux, TV presenter Alice Beer and Lady Helen Taylor.''

A spokesperson for Chelsea said: "We are aware that Ashley was detained last night. We will want to establish all the facts before commenting.''
