THE government yesterday signed a contract with Chinese company M/S China Civil Engineering Construction Cooperation (CCECC) to build the ‘Interchange’ at the junction between Morogoro, Sam Najoma and Mandela roads at Ubungo in Dar es Salaam.

Under the contract, CCECC will start construction as soon as possible and the project is expected to end within 30 months, which is equivalent to two years and a half.

Speaking soon after sealing the pact, chief executive officer of the Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads), Patrick Mfugale said that the project is expected to cost 177.4bn/ and the foundation stone for the project will take place next Month.

Eng Mfugale called upon builders to ensure that they start construction as soon as possible as the government had already made all the preparations including paying compensation amounting to 2.1bn/ to the people whose infrastructures had been demolished. The Ubongo interchange will be built from the World Bank loan, the official said.

He said that more than 65,000 vehicles go through the junction between Morogoro Sam Nujoma and Mandera roads every day, the situation that causes traffic jam. The area is the main gateway to the city of Dar es Salaam, hence the project will play an imperative role in improving transport in the city and stimulate economic growth, explained Eng. Mfugale.

For his part, managing director of CCECC, Jiang Yigao assured the government that construction in the area will start as soon as possible and completed on time.

So far the government is building a similar facility along the TAZARA junction in Dar es Salaam.
