SGR carried 20,952 TEUs of cargo in February 2022, up from 19,911 TEUs in February 2021.
In February this year, an average of 8.3 trains carried more than 698 TEUs per day, and 230 freight trains completed the journey in February 2021.
"This positive performance is also attributable to the ample daily supply of containerized and bulk cargo, with an average supply of 500-600 wagons," Kenya Railways director-general Philip Mainga said in a statement.
In conventional freight, standard gauge rail operator Africa Star Railway Operations delivered 478,719 tonnes of bulk cargo to Nairobi in February 2022, up from 404,928 tonnes in the same period last year.
Mr. Mainga further added that the new line at the Naivasha ICD has facilitated the transfer of goods from standard gauge railway wagons to meter gauge trains, with 14 trains heading to the Naivasha ICD this month, carrying 310 TEUs and with 6,202 tonnes of bulk cargo, the seamless connection of Naivasha inland container cargo from the standard gauge railway to the old meter gauge railway has begun.
