Former BOT Governors Termination Invalidates U.S. Visa
January 16, 2008
The Tanzanian government recently inquired about the visa status of Mr. Daudi Ballali, the former Bank of Tanzania governor, in light of his recent termination. The United States Government has informed the Tanzanian government that it is revoking Mr. Ballali's visa because he no longer represents Tanzania.
Mr. Ballali visa was issued in his capacity as a representative of the Tanzania government. Simply put, because of the termination of his service, he no longer represents the government and is no longer eligible for his current non-immigrant visa status.
Increasing transparency and fighting corruption are two principal values held dearly by both the United States of America and the United Republic of Tanzania. We support the Tanzanian governments decision to press forward with an investigation of irregularities at the Bank of Tanzania, and believe it shows President Kikwetes resolve to combat corruption. A prompt investigation and prosecution of those responsible in the Bank of Tanzania case is imperative.
There is a history of close cooperation between our two nations. Both countries are committed to working closely to root out corruption and bringing to justice any individual found culpable of engaging in corrupt activities.
