Sergi Roberto had shown in previous seasons an ability to adapt to several different positions in midfield. However, this season the man from Reus in the south of Catalonia has taken it up a notch with his versatility, having played in seven different positions this season for Luis Enrique’s team. In 25 appearances he has played a total of 1,666, finding the net once.
The Barça number 20 began the season with a new challenge – adapting to the position of right back with
Douglas injured during the Club’s pre-season tour. At the start of the season he performed admirably at full back both in the league and in the Champions League given
Dani Alves’absence due to injury.
When the Brazilian returned to fitness, Sergi Roberto returned to his natural position on the right hand side of midfield. However, his adaptability lead to him featuring on the left wing at home to
BATE Borisov in the Champions League.
Just a few days later
Luis Enrique sprung a surprise by including Roberto on the right wing in the ‘Clásico’ against
Real Madrid. The man from Reus responded with an excellent performance in the 4-0 victory in the Santiago Bernabéu, including an assist for one of the goals.
Against
Granada in the league the midfielder performed in the defensive position normally occupied by
Sergio Busquets. In the recent Copa del Rey game against Espanyol away from home, Roberto occupied a place in central midfield alongside
Ivan Rakitic.
His most recent display of versatility came in the game against Athletic Club last Sunday. With
Jordi Alba injured, the number 20 filled in admirably at left back. Luis Enrique was not shy with praise for his go to player: “In a team like ours, except in goa, he could play in any position…It’s no surprise. The most difficult thing is doing it well all over the field and Sergi Roberto does that.”
