who lied to you that your SGR will be cheaper for UG trades?? lol! it will be cheaper for Rwanda and Burundi yes...but not for Uganda...do you know the distance between Kampala and Dar?? now compare it to Kampala and Mombasa distance...then do the math...your SGR is a white elephant...Rwanda and Burundi cannot even amass a quarter of the cargo that Kenya transports to Uganda...DRC is out of the question since it does not have the money to build an SGR for now....but Kenya has Uganda, South Sudan and parts of Ethiopia, Rwanda and Burundi
If u r keen observant then u should be worried by now! Think of Tanga-Dodoma-Mwanza-Kampala route or Tanga-Arusha- Musoma-Port Bell route. First, be it on transfer of cargo or running costs, Tanzania has immense advantages on both routes as first regardless the distance, the Tanga-Dodoma-Mwanza-Kampala will beat Mombasa-Nairobi-Malaba-Kampala route on speed.
Be informed our SGR will be cruising at more than 120 km/h (some sections like flat central plateau to Victoria basin cargo will be 160 km/h will passengers 200 km/h as Prof. Mbarawa explained) as urs will be snailing at 80 km/h whereas aside that speed of over 120 km/hour, the Tanga-Arusha- Musoma-Port Bell route is shorter than Mombasa-Nairobi-Malaba-Kampala route. Even if the speed of ferries across Lake Victoria is to be factored, goods will get get to Kampala faster via central corridor in comparison to Northern corridor! Reason being the ferries speed will also to be in the range of 30 to 40 nautical miles.
Second, based on the cost of construction that is influenced by competitive procurement and constructor costs, plus interest rates on the loan accrued by the respective governments, the two routes in Tanzania have a bigger room to be operated at a very cheaper fare compared to ur SGR as Chinese have made a kill on interest rate that u r to pay (I hear a double figure). Also not to forget the operation running costs of ur SGR will be much influenced by the diesel global price.
Third, with discovery of massive proven oil reserves in Western Uganda, that advantage is even more visible as it is pretty obvious Hoima will grow to be a J'burg of East Africa in the near future Magufuli knows that a reason he mentioned of Mwanza Bukoba-Hoima/Kampala route during pipeline launch at Chogoleani Tanga.
Just to let u know, a guy that drew Tanzanian map gave a of a more virtually most comparative advantage to the country over most of her neighbors as far as access of the great lakes countries is concerned take that to the bank and if u don't believe, then make use of scales n see how the alignment of our shared border gives Tanzania a more comparative advantage over Kenya as far as reaching any country in the great lakes including South Sudan with Uganda being squeezed at the middle.
BTW, this weekend Hoima-Tanga pipeline will be launched for the 2nd leg in Hoima n Magufuli that is busy assembling train wagons carriers (two already in works while a third contracted to Koreans) to link Uganda n Tanzania across Lake Victoria being a more pragmatic n economic fiercely competitor; will be signing an attendance book plus receiving a special honor to unveil a "project launch placard" with H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Sit back n watch enviously while corruption is being protected via tribalism in that Mumbi country of urs!
