The Barrick Gold Company and the Government of Tanzania today Wednesday, February 20 held talks on the implementation of the agreement that the two parties entered into in 2017.
The company which is the owner of the Acacia company entered into a dispute with the Tanzanian government over the transportation of mineral sand or concentrate and tax evasion.
Acacia has continued to deny all the accusations against it, but as the dispute continues, Barrick's leadership under its chairman, Prof. John Thornton, ventured into negotiations with the Tanzanian government.

In October 2017, the two parties agreed that the company would pay the Tanzanian Government a 16 percent share and a fifty percent share of the income from the sale of gold from the 3 mines it owns.
Barrick also agreed to provide 300 million US Dollars as a goodwill payment to compensate for the loss of income from the company's business.
The agreement, however, has not been implemented, and to deal with it, today Barrick's Chief Operating Officer, who deals with Africa and the Middle East, Dr. Willem Jacobs, met with President Magufuli at the White House in Dar es Salaam.
According to the information of the State House, the Minister of the Constitution of Tanzania Professor Palamagamba Kabudi who led the settlement negotiations said that they expect the implementation of the agreement by the end of March 2019.
"...now it is up to each side to go to their relevant agencies to make final decisions so that implementation can take place," Prof Kabudi was quoted as saying in the White House statement.
However, for its part, the Barrick company in their statement did not mention exactly when the agreement will be implemented.
In their statement, they have said that they will submit their agreement to the "independent directors" of Acacia soon so that they can work on it.
Barrick CEO Mark Bristow is quoted in the statement as saying that the dispute has had a significant commercial impact and they believe that the implementation of the agreement will be productive for all parties.

How much money has Tanzania lost?

Tanzania has lost approximately 188 trillion Tanzanian shillings (84 billion US dollars) in the period of 19 years between 1998 and 2017 through the transportation of gold and copper.
This is according to the Commission Report created in March this year by President Magufuli.
This report has come a few days after the first report focused on explaining the number of minerals and money that Tanzania loses due to the transportation of mineral sand.
President John Magufuli expressed his anger at the results of the commission: ''These people have no mercy, they take all this gold, but they also did not pay taxes,'' he explained when handing over the report, an event shown live on television.
What did the investigation report recommend?
The commission made 20 recommendations, all of which were accepted by President Magufuli. Among those recommendations are to:
  • continue to block the transportation of minerals until the back taxes have been paid
  • The government demands taxes and royalties from all mining companies that have evaded paying taxes and royalties as per the law.
  • The government should initiate a procedure that will facilitate the construction of a smelter, in order to control the loss of income and generate income for Tanzanians.
  • The government should investigate and take legal action against former ministers, attorney generals and their deputies, directors of contract departments and mining commissioners, lawyers of the Ministry of Mines, and all other employees involved in entering mining contracts.
