"The first to arrive were French
Holy Ghost Fathers. They settled in Zanzibar in 1863, moved their headquarters to Bagamoyo in 1868, and in 1877 built their first inland station at Mhonda
in Ungulu, later establishing themselves also in Uluguru.
The next group were
Anglicans of the Universities Mission to Central Africa,
who also settled first in Zanzibar, in 1864, and shortly afterwards began work on the mainland at Magila, on the border between Bonde and Usambara, and at Masasi, in the extreme south.
Another Anglican body, the Church Missionary Society, established a station at Mpwapwa
on the road to Uganda in 1876.
The
London Missionary Society - a British Non-Conformist organisation - began work at Mirambo’s capital in 1878 and was also active along Lake Tanganyika.
Finally, the
White Fathers, members of a largely French society formed explicitly for work in Africa, reached Ujiji in 1879, and later established bases at Unyanyembe in 1881 and at Karema, on the south-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, in 1885"
