AC Milan have an agreement with former Valencia boss Marcelino to take over as the club’s new head coach at the end of the season, a report claims.

Stefano Pioli’s future as manager of the Rossoneri appears to be under serious threat as failure to qualify for European competition for 2020-21 would mean his contract is not renewed.

Despite an improvement in performances, an improvement in results has not followed as he has won just eight of 18 games in charge, including damaging defeats to the likes of Juventus, Roma, Lazio, Atalanta and – most recently – Inter.

According to the latest from Mundo Deportivo though, Milan have already lined up their successor. They claim that Paolo Maldini contacted Marcelino around a month and a half ago to present his project.

He obtained the commitment from the Asturian coach to become the new boss once this season has finished, and the 54-year-old has even refused offers from other clubs to respect his agreement.
The decision to bet on Marcelino is also backed by Zvonimir Boban, the report adds.
His record as a manager in LaLiga is as follows: 318 games, 135 wins, 86 draws and 97 defeats

AC Milan are continuing to press for the signing of Matias Zaracho from Racing Club in Argentina, according to the latest reports.

Gianluca Di Marzio reported towards the end of the January window that Zaracho was offered to Milan by his agent Augustin Jimenez, with the playmaker having been repeatedly linked with a move to Milan since the summer.

Argentine journalist Julian Mazzara also reported that Paolo Maldini spoke with the 21-year-old’s entourage and made an offer of €15m plus bonuses to sign Zaracho.

According to Wednesday’s edition of Tuttosport – as cited by MilanNews.it – Milan are refusing to give up on Zaracho and have, as Mazzara reported, tabled a bid of €15million to try and land him.

However, the Argentine side are playing hard ball over their prized young asset and are asking for €20million to get the deal done.

Zaracho has three goals and added one assist in 15 league games this season.

Stefano Pioli for Milan TV and Rai Sport:

Are you upset about the rumors about your future?

No. I don't care about such things. There are still many matches ahead of us and many goals to be achieved. The future is not my priority.

About the importance of the Italian Cup:

The Italian Cup is becoming important for all prestigious clubs in Italy. All clubs want to do well in this competition. We managed to reach the semi-finals, but it is not enough. We want to go all the way through this competition.

About the first half of the match against Inter:

During the first half we showed many positive things. We showed that we can play with very strong teams. This half must give us confidence and awareness of our capabilities. We also need to understand that in some games we cannot go back and give initiative to our rivals. Unfortunately, we ended this match with broken bones. We all wanted to end this match differently. We must draw conclusions from this match and be able to present the right determination and continuity for a full 95 minutes in tomorrow's match in the Italian Cup.

About mistakes:

There are situations in which attention and intensity must be at the highest level. Our problem was that we presented too much intensity when the ball was far away from us, and too small when we had it in our possession. We paid a high price for these errors. We must learn from this and try to do our best. We still have many goals to achieve this season. Tomorrow's match will be one of them. We have to play well in this match.

About fans:

We are very sorry about our recent defeat. We must draw conclusions from this and show that what happened in the first half was not an accident. We must prove that we can still develop and we can do well. A promotion to the Italian Cup final would be an important achievement. I think we are well prepared for tomorrow's meeting.

About Juventus:

Tomorrow we will face the best team in Italy and one of the best in Europe. It is an opportunity to show that we are not inferior to them and we can compete with them equally.

About the match against Juventus in Serie A:

A lot has changed since then. We are doing better both on and off the pitch. We played a great match then and we even had the opportunity to take the lead. We must be aware that each match should be approached with great determination and conviction. We have our advantages, thanks to which we can do well on the pitch.

About semifinals:

The first match will be very important. The rematch will also have its meaning. Getting a positive result in tomorrow's match would mean a certain advantage in the next match. We need to stay focused, work as a team and present the best performance opportunity.

AC Milan could make an attempt to hire Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi this summer if Stefano Pioli leaves, a report claims.

Every since Sunday’s 4-2 Derby della Madonnina defeat to Inter, speculation appears to have ramped up regarding who could take over from Pioli, who will leave at the end of the season if a top six finish is not achieved.

The newspaper Tuttosport (via MilanLive) are reporting on Thursday that Luciano Spalletti and Simone Inzaghi are credible options to become the Rossoneri’s new head coach this summer.

The first was heavily linked after the sacking of Marco Giampaolo, but the contractual problems between him and Inter did not allow for his arrival at Milanello. The latter is doing very well at Lazio, who will not want to allow him to leave given the fact they are in a Scudetto race and he is contracted until 2021.

Another name that Tuttosport mentions is that of Andriy Shevchenko, currently the manager of the Ukrainian national team. It seems unlikely however that Milan would want to put another legend on the bench, given how the experiments with Clarence Seedorf, Pippo Inzaghi and Gennaro Gattuso turned out.

It is not excluded that the club makes an approach for Marcelino, too. He too was considered after Giampaolo’s sacking, but made it clear that he did not want to take over the current season. He would like to coach Milan, but we will have to see if something concrete will develop.

Although Juventus equalised in the final stages of the game, AC Milan put in a strong performance as a team this evening. There were few standouts, but together the display was encouraging. Down below are the player ratings.

Starting XI

Donnarumma (6.5): Didn’t have much to do, but got the job done when he was called into action. Of course, it’s never easy for a goalkeeper to save a penalty, especially when Ronaldo is the penalty taker.

Calabria (6): Did well throughout the game, keeping Ronaldo at bay for most of the game. Displayed that he has some pace which came in handy both in the defensive and attacking phase. Unlucky on the penalty incident, you can certainly say.

Kjaer (6.5): The Dane did a lot better than in the derby, keeping his calm for the entire game. Didn’t look as slow this evening, as he managed to recoup on several occasions after seemingly losing control.

Romagnoli (7): Just like his partner, much better than the derby. The defence was unlucky to concede the lead goal, really, and deserved to get more out of the game after splendid defending at times.

Hernandez (6): As always, the Frenchman did well on both ends of the pitch. However, although the first yellow card was cheap, he did risk a lot by making the second challenge. He will miss the second leg, of course, which is a blow for Milan. Too rash.

Kessie (7): The Ivorian did really well in midfield this evening, especially in the defensive phase. He often dropped down to offer support, while also making a few powerful runs up the pitch. His stamina was needed in the final stages of the game.

Bennacer (7): Once again, the former Empoli man performed to his level in the middle of the pitch. The partnership with Kessie is flourishing and this really reflects on both players. Overall, no complaints.

Castillejo (7): The Spaniard kept running up and down the right flank. Although you can’t always see it, his presence in attack certainly helps the Rossoneri. Got the assist for Rebic with his weak foot.

Calhanoglu (6.5): Another good performance by the Turkish midfielder. In his new role, he continued to link up well with Ibrahimovic. An important player for Milan, that’s for sure, although there were no fireworks about his outing today.

Rebic (7.5 – MOTM): Strong, powerful and concrete. The Croatian has really become a crucial player for the Rossoneri, with his sharp turns and strong runs. Did well to offer support to Ibrahimovic in the box, opening the scoring with a nice volley.

Ibrahimovic (7): Just like against Inter, the Swede was the focal point of Milan. Won a lot of duels and also did well to set up his teammates in attack. Positive sign ahead of the clash with Torino on Monday.

Substitutes

Laxalt (6): Did well the little time we got to see him. Although Milan defended for most of the time he was on, his side wasn’t exposed. Hence the low rating, simply for the little we saw.
Saelemaekers (6):
Got 16 minutes including added time, and looked promising it must be said. Added energy to the team and when he got on the ball, he seemed comfortable. Can use his left foot which is a big plus.

Paqueta (N/A): Came on for Calhanoglu and did well in the defensive phase, but we didn’t get to see much.

Rocco Commisso, President of Florentina:
ā€œI want to be very respectful of Italian football, I want to carry it forward. Last night it was clear what happened to Milan.
Not just me to talk about injustice, also other teams.
I believe that making progress with the VAR is a very good thing for footballā€

AC Milan are interested in a move for Lazio defender Luiz Felipe, a report claims, along with as their rivals Juventus and Inter.

According to Friday’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport – as cited by Calciomercato.com – Lazio are ready to get to work on tying down the Italian-Brazilian centre-back to a new deal.

The Biancoceleste have already put on their agenda the negotiation for the renewal of Felipe’s contract, which is currently set to expire in 2022.

The new agreement would allow the player to earn a higher salary than his current €1m net per season, but mainly Lazio do not want to run the risk of losing the 22-year-old, who they signed from Brazilian Serie D club Ituano.

The report adds that there is no shortage of admirers, both in Italy and abroad, with Milan as well as Juventus and Inter credited with interest in Felipe, who has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season so far and has become a mainstay in Simone Inzaghi’s starting XI.

Ismael Bennacer for Milan TV:

About his game:

I always try to do my best on the pitch. I feel the pleasure of playing. It's true that I've been doing better and better since the beginning of the season. I know this team better and the trainer trusted me more. Every day I learn and develop. Some things are going better for me than before.

Scorring a goal at San Siro is my dream, but I don't think about scoring. I'm just thinking about the band.

About San Siro:

When I play, I can't hear the fans singing. When I recover the ball and hear their voices, their support can be helpful.

About the derby:

I think that one should play until the very end and should never give up. We didn't play like in the first half and we lost. That's football now.

About Juventus:

We played a good game but didn't win. We can feel proud because we showed ourselves from one of the best teams in the world.

Revenge? We must believe that we can reach the final. Otherwise, further competition does not make sense. We will play in Turin without many important players. Juventus is not an insurmountable team.

About the new formation:

Compared to 2019, we are doing better and better. I'm getting along better with Franck.

About Torino:

We will be playing on Monday, so we need to regenerate properly. We must be properly prepared for this match.

Milan have it all to do in the second leg of our Coppa Italia semi-final tie with Juventus after a 1-1 draw in the first meeting on Thursday night.

Ante Rebic was on the mark again as we took the lead just after the hour mark, but Theo Hernandez saw red minutes later before Cristiano Ronaldo struck in injury time from the penalty spot.

It came after a controversial decision, but with an away goal and a string of suspensions to deal with, the odds will be stacked against Milan in the return leg in Turin on March 4.

Controversial decision

Sadly, the second Paolo Valeri went to check the incident again, it was obvious he was going to award the penalty. It was the expected outcome, and while we can all bemoan the decision, it was ultimately given and Juve have their away goal.

Given Davide Calabria’s proximity to the ball and the fact that he had his back to it at the time it struck his arm, there is surely no common sense in awarding the penalty. Perhaps that’s just a biased opinion.

Take away the fact that it was Juventus and strip it down to the incident in isolation, it’s baffling to understand the thought process of VAR and Valeri to change their mind and give the penalty, or perhaps it’s the rules that they’re following which need to be looked at again.

No Ibra, Samu or Theo for second leg

To make the challenge even more difficult next month, Milan will be without the suspended trio of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Samu Castillejo and Theo Hernandez.

Ultimately, it has to be seen as an opportunity for others to step in, and with quality on the bench waiting to be given a chance, this is their time to step up and deliver.

Our task has undoubtedly become more difficult with that influential trio unavailable, but we deserved a win on Thursday night and if we show the same determination, commitment and desire, we’ll give ourselves a chance of advancing.

Rebic continues to deliver

Few, if any, fans would have predicted Ante Rebic walking off to a standing ovation from the Milan faithful a few months ago.

The 26-year-old struggled through the opening months of the season, and it even raised question marks over whether or not he would last the duration of his loan spell.

He deserves an enormous amount of credit though for turning things around as that’s now five goals and an assist in 15 appearances for us, and it’s hoped that he can continue to show consistency and score vital goals.

Good reaction after derby defeat

There is little doubt that the dressing room would have been dejected and bereft of confidence after our second half performance against Inter.

A response was needed, and while we did allow Juventus to dictate the tempo and possession for too long at times, we showed the right spirit needed in a game like this to secure a positive result.

That arguably says a lot about the character in this squad, and it’s just a real shame and a huge disappointment that we couldn’t get the result that we deserved on the night.

Bennacer a rock in midfield

It seems like a very simple formula to success for Milan. When we play at a high tempo, play short and sharp passes and go more direct, we can cause teams problems.

We saw that in the first half against Inter and at the start of each respective half against Juventus before tailing off and letting both sides back into the game.

At the heart of that quick, penetrative football is Ismael Bennacer. While he did get sloppy in the latter stages, his defensive coverage in front of the backline coupled with his ability to just get on with things without slowing down our play is making him a stand-out performer every time he’s on the pitch.

Mino Raiola spoke about the 3 Milan players he represents šŸ—£
ZLATAN
ā€œThere is a half project at Milan, he will decide at the end of the year what he wants do to. What do I recommend? To go ahead if he wants to have fun, and to stop if he doesn’t anymore. For now it seems to me that he is having fun, it can be seen from his spirit, and how he’s helping his teammates. He’s given another type of mentality to the boys.ā€

BONAVENTURA
ā€œSome things come to an end. I don’t know, we are talking, but we will see. Who knows, maybe we are looking at other proposals. I think the club must know what they want to do with him, perhaps some within the club want him to stay, and others not so much. Let’s see if we can put them together and find out.ā€

DONNARUMMA
ā€œHe shouldn't have renewed, at that moment it wasn't the right moment. It was the choice of the heart. And if you make the heart choose, in that sense, it can also be the right choice. He is happy, and has chosen to do what he wants. But on Donnarumma I don't want to go further, because anything I say causes a fuss. He has a contract until 2021, there is plenty of time to evaluate things.ā€

As qualifying for the Champions League is getting harder by the week, the rumours of which manager will replace Stefano Pioli at AC Milan have started. By the looks of it, Max Allegri won’t be the one for the Rossoneri.

According to reports from SportMediaset, Milan are working on bringing the manager back to the San Siro, but the club’s project doesn’t seem to convince the former Juventus boss. Instead, he wants a team capable of competing at the highest level.

The same goes for Roma, who are also interested in Allegri. Most likely, the manager’s future will be abroad, as PSG and Man Utd are keeping tabs on the situation. In fact, the Red Devils are in pole position to sign him, per the report.

Solskjaer is destined to leave the club in the summer and this will allow Man Utd to make a move for Allegri. Therefore, the dream of seeing Allegri back at San Siro is vanishing, unfortunately.

Five goals in his last six games. Ante Rebic has stunned AC Milan since he started getting continuous playing time, quickly becoming a crucial player for the Rossoneri in the pursuit of a top-four finish.

After a slow start with the team, failing to climb the pecking order, everything suddenly clicked for the winger. His tiger eyes are back and what we are seeing is what made him so good at Eintracht Frankfurt: strength, pace, and concrete finishing.

Of course, this development has changed his future. Milan can no longer ignore the Croatian if they want to build something important. Therefore, work is now underway to turn the two-year loan into a permanent move.

According to Calciomercato.com, citing Eintracht Frankfurt’s director Oliver Frankenbach, the Andre Silva-Rebic loan swap negotiations were so rapid – due to mercato deadline – that the clubs were unable to reach an agreement on the buy-out clauses.

Zvone Boban and Paolo Maldini will soon meet with the player’s agent and the German side, per the report. Considering Rebic’s form as of late, the foundations for a permanent move must be laid.

Buffon left San Siro with Daniel Maldini’s shirt.....

He told reporters: ā€œIn my collection I have Chiesa and son, Thuram and son, Weah and son, and now Maldini and son. Now, I’m waiting for their grandchildren.ā€

The divide at AC Milan between those at the director level appears to be growing deeper, according to a report.

It was reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport on Wednesday that the January transfer window was heavily affected by one man – Ivan Gazidis – who blocked a number of operations that Zvone Boban and Paolo Maldini were keen to complete.

Now, according to Alberto Cerutti of Calciomercato.com, Boban and Maldini have tried their best to save the season – such as convincing Ibrahimovic to return – Gazidis continues to have a different vision.

Cerutti claims that the former Arsenal chief ā€˜leaked’ to German outlet Bild the news of the interest in Rangnick as a replacement for Pioli, in the week before the derby.

Gazidis himself has never publicly defender Pioli or his work, so it is clear that in Milan there are two parties with dangerous differences between them: one with the passion of Boban and Maldini, the other cold and invisible – without any technical experience – of Gazidis.

For this reason Maldini came out into the open not only to defend Pioli, but above all to distance himself from Gazidis’ wishes with a clear and sensational phrase: ā€œRangnick is not suitable for a club like ours.ā€

Rumours regarding Pioli’s exit are likely to filter through to the players, who will have even less incentive to fight and save the season after a disastrous start.

The report concludes with the statement: ā€œEven Boban and Maldini at the club are not enough if they are battling against equally overrated leaders, better at destroying than at building.ā€
