AC Milan directors Paolo Maldini and Zvonomir Boban deserve a lot of credit for what they managed to do in January, but only if it is a precursor to something bigger.

The Rossoneri leadership managed to ship out six players, including a number of high earners, and brought in five players to essentially plug the gaps until the end of the season.

As is well documented, through operations they hope will end favourably it is possible that Maldini, Boban and sporting director Ricky Massara could have built up a kitty of up to €80million for the summer.

Fabio Borini’s €4.3m gross salary is off the books, as is half of Pepe Reina’s €2.6m and Mattia Caldara has joined Atalanta for 18 months, which will save around €6m – and there is an option to buy.

Ricardo Rodriguez left for PSV Eindhoven until the end of the season, saving half of his €3.7m salary, but perhaps most importantly Suso and Krzysztof Piatek have departed for Sevilla and Hertha Berlin respectively. An almost pure capital gain on the Spaniard is added to by the €22m base fee received for the Pole.

Replacements did arrive in some forms. Alexis Saelemaekers was signed as cover for Samu Castillejo on the right but it now seems like the management have realised he is a better right-back. Diego Laxalt was recalled, Simon Kjaer will replace Caldara until at least the summer and the same with Begovic in goal covering Reina.

However, something that Maldini and Boban must be pulled up on is the fact that they failed to address a critical lack of depth in two positions, which perhaps they thought they could get away with until June. They couldn’t, and it was exposed after one game.

As news filtered out that Zlatan Ibrahimovic would miss Sunday’s game against Hellas Verona with a combination of flu and muscle fatigue, the prospect of a strike pairing of Rafael Leao and Ante Rebic seemed to slip under the radar as a formality.

What we saw was what should have been obvious: the 4-4-2 does not work without a target man and/or a natural No.9 – both of which Milan do not possess when Ibrahimovic doesn’t play.

So much of the emphasis is on getting the ball out wide and putting it into dangerous areas and hoping the overload will generate scoring chances, and with two players up front in Leao and Rebic would could be described as support strikers at best, Stefano Pioli’s side looked toothless and pedestrian. It took a deflected free-kick to earn an undeserved point, after all, but Verona are a good side it must be said.

Had Piatek stayed he would have played and, who knows, Milan may have won, but he was allowed to leave so close to the deadline with no replacement ready. The situation is so desperate that journalist Carlo Pellegatti even called on the club to re-sign free agent Alessandro Matri.

Barring the surprise signing of any free agent target men, the situation is unsalvageable. We just have to hope that Ibrahimovic’s 38-year-old body holds up under the ever-increasing pressure and responsibility.

The only other solution is to reinvent the way the team plays; to have a back up plan, perhaps the 4-3-3 with a false nine as last seen when Jeremy Menez donned the Rossonero back in 2014-15. Given the pace and technical quality the team possesses, it might just work.

That would however throw up a question regarding another area criminally ignored by the Milan hierarchy in January: the midfield.
The switch to a 4-4-2 formation over the last few weeks has been a positive one in terms of the creation of chances and increase in goals, and the two banks of four actually appear to have had a positive impact on the defensive record too. However, there is reason to believe that was due to simply – with respect – the quality of opponents faced so far with the new system rather than a magical fix.

With Ismael Bennacer suspended for last weekend’s game and Rade Krunic supposedly injury, Hakan Calhanoglu was asked to occupy an unfamiliar role by anchoring the midfield alongside the inconsistent Franck Kessie. It didn’t work: Verona overran Milan in most departments, and it exposed a fundamental flaw in squad depth.

A central midfielder was needed even before swapping to a 4-4-2 where the middle duo are so important, but none arrived. There were talks with Florentino Luis, but Benfica took him off the market. That’s the nature of the beast in the final few days of the window, and maybe it would be naive to assume a 19-year-old from a different league without much game time this season would have done a better job on Sunday.

The main point is about preparation though. Cutting salary and clearing the decks is ok as long as you can name a functional squad on a matchday. On Sunday, Milan couldn’t. With players returning for the Derby della Madonnina this coming weekend things look healthier, but knowing we are only an injury or suspension away from being plunged into another crisis – one that this time may fall against Lazio, Roma or Juventus – is inexcusable.

If top four has been given up on, as the lack of investment suggests, then that’s fair enough – but it really should not end up costing Milan a Europa League place. Although a competition that divides opinion, it is important for attracting players, and in 2018-19 it earned the club almost €15million – that from a campaign that resulted in group stage elimination.

As mentioned at the very start, it could be that the plan is to clear the decks ahead of the summer, but that is putting a lot of eggs in a basket that may not be big enough to hold them.

Inter Midfielder Stefano Sensi: “We Must Be Careful & Concentrated Against AC Milan, It’ll Be Tough”
February 6, 2020

In an interview with Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset, Inter central midfielder Stefano Sensi has shared his thoughts ahead of this weekend’s Derby della Madonnina between Inter and AC Milan.

The Italian international has been missing for the past few weeks due to a calf problem but reports state that he is working hard to be back available to Inter manager Antonio Conte for selection.

Despite the fact 19 points currently separate Inter in second place from AC Milan who are currently in eighth place in the Serie A table, Sensi, who joined Inter in a season long loan with option to buy deal from fellow Serie A club Sassuolo this past Summer, admitted he knows that the match against the Rossoneri will be far from easy.

He said: “We must be careful and concentrated throughout the game because it will be tough.”Sensi also spoke on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is largely expected to play a big role for AC Milan on Sunday night at San Siro.“A champion has arrived at AC Milan, he has shown it throughout his career. He has raised the attention, concentration and also lifted a little pressure off of his teammates.”

Report: Thiago Silva set to leave PSG on a free – Milan idea ‘could come back into fashion’
By Oliver Fisher - 7 February 2020,

AC Milan could make a move to re-sign former defender Thiago Silva if he does not agree a renewal with Paris Saint-Germain, a report claims.

According to Calciomercato.it – who cite French outlet L’Equipe – there is a big chance that Silva will leave the French capital at the end of the season as sporting director Leonardo is not keen on the idea of offering his compatriot a new deal.

The 35-year-old – who played at Milan from 2009-2012 before his move to Paris – has a European passport having obtained French citizenship, but this is not enough to convince Leonardo as the centre-back earns €1.5m per month in gross wages.

The report adds that if the renewal does not arrive, the idea of a return to Milan may come back into fashion, eight years after he departed along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Elliott Management – as evidenced by the return of the Swede in January – have opened to the idea of buying players over 30. Thiago Silva could be another exception, and one which would bring experience and an ideal companion for Alessio Romagnoli.

The Brazilian meanwhile still wants to play for his country at the 2022 World Cup, when he will be 37, so playing at a high level is still very much an objective.

🎙️ Matteo Musacchio : "I've been playing with Alessio Romagnoli for so many years and we really understand each other without even looking at each other."

Ricardo Kaká for La Gazzetta dello Sport:

About Lucas Paqueta's adaptation problems:

In my time there were 7 Brazilians in the team. There were many other people who helped me, for example Galliani, Braida and Berlusconi. Costacurta helped me learn Italian. Borriello was my contemporary, so it was easier for me to share certain things with someone. I could learn something from everyone. Lucas needs to find confidence. He was doing well last season. In the second season he is struggling with some problems. I know from my own experience that such things can happen. Lucas must be aware of his qualities and skills. In a strong team this can be important.

Is Lucas too Brazilian?

If someone decides to transfer a Brazilian, they must know what players are Brazilians. Lucas must understand Italian football, but he can't lose his own identity. He must remain creative because it is our national trait, but at the same time he must be practical. If he decides to do a trick or dribble, he must do it towards the goal.

What is his role on the pitch?

I believe he can be a good mezzala.

What are your expectations of derbys?

It is always said that derby is a special match. The Champions League is even more special.

I expect the upcoming derby to let Milan really change. Such a match can give a great impulse. San Siro is a great stadium.

How will this match end?

I count on Ibra, so I hope this match will end well for us.

About the future of San Siro:

I hope that some architectural elements will be preserved. I understand that football is a business and that you cannot live in the past, but something must remain from this stadium. Maracana has changed its face many times and is no longer the same, but it still has a great history.

About Ibrahimović:

It's great to see him in the team. Despite his age, he still enjoys the game. Ibra is a year older than me, but with the right tools and physiotherapy that are currently available, he can continue his career. Motivation is his the strongest feature.

Is the current Milan very different from yours?

Times changes. There were many economic and management problems. I noticed that the team's situation in the table improved. I hope that both Milan and Inter will start investing again and return to their former glory. Milan and Inter are historical teams. Milan is a beautiful city and Italy is a wonderful country. It saddened me that no team from Milan advanced to the next round of the Champions League or even to the quarter-finals. You need to go back to a certain tradition. Thanks to the money from the Champions League, you can bring great players and get back to the top.

What do you think about Financial Fair Play?

This is a vicious circle. I understand some rules, but if you don't invest enough money you won't be able to build a good team and you won't advance to the most important tournaments. This creates a vicious circle. In this way the dog bites its own tail.

What are your plans for the future?

I don't want to be a coach. I finished the course in Brazil and now I am trying to deepen my knowledge. In the future I would like to be a manager or maybe a president of a club for many years, but not a coach or sports director. The life of a coach is too complicated. Being close to my children is the most important thing right now. Maybe in 5 or 10 years I will change my mind.

Will your future be related to Milan?

I would love to come back, but this is not the right time. I would like to work with Maldini and Boban and help the club, but it is not a good time to leave Brazil.

*Pioli: 'Milan inspired by Ibrahimovic'*

Stefano Pioli wants Milan to “take inspiration” from Zlatan Ibrahimovic when they face Inter in the Derby della Madonnina. “Some matches are worth more than others.”

It kicks off on Sunday at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“There is a gap in the table because Inter did much better at the start of the season, but we are trying to recover lost ground and arrive at this appointment in good shape,” said the coach in his press conference.

Marco Giampaolo was still at the helm when these sides played in September, Marcelo Brozovic and Romelu Lukaku sealing a 2-0 Inter result.

“All games are played to win, but there are some matches that are worth more than others. A derby is there to be won. The best part of preparing for a derby is working out the strategy of the match, taking into account the characteristics of the opposition.”

It’s reported Inter could use Christian Eriksen as a trequartista behind lone striker Romelu Lukaku, with Milan considering something similar for Hakan Calhanoglu supporting Ibrahimovic.

“I am not worried, as Inter are always recognisable in their tactics. We want to be solid and very dangerous, so it’s all about grasping those opportunities when they present themselves.

“We respect our opponents, they are a strong side and we’ll run into difficulties, but must maintain our self-belief throughout the match, rely on our clear ideas.

“Inter are unbeaten in Serie A for a very long time, but we must take inspiration from Ibra and all take on his face, that fired up, determined and hungry face.”

Ibrahimovic missed last week’s 1-1 draw with Verona after coming down with flu, but Pioli assures he’ll be ready to play this huge fixture.

“He spent the week with a specifically planned exercise regime, once he has a full training session with the squad, then we can say he is available,” continued Pioli.

“The only player who might have some fitness issues is Rade Krunic, but we await the medical report on him.

“Victory would mean climbing the table, boosting confidence, positivity and having the right attitude. The derby is worth more than three points, my team has shown courage and we have another opportunity to do that tomorrow."

Ibrahimović to Sky ~

“It’s hard to explain, at half time we told ourselves the first 15 will be decisive but we conceded 2 goals, we stopped playing & we stopped pressing, after the 2nd we collapsed, a lot of it is due to inexperience. you must know how to control a 2-0 lead”

Pioli on #derby: "I am angry with my players, we did one of the best performances but our carelessness was too much. I have to be bitter, I have to make it clear that if we want to stay at a certain level, attention and lucidity are too much important "

Just as in the first derby where Romelu Lukaku got the better of him for the second goal, Alessio Romagnoli made another costly error on Sunday night.

The Milan captain allowed Stefan De Vrij to beat him to a corner which put the Nerazzurri 3-2 up and completed the comeback after a dream first half for the Rossoneri.

As Calciomercato.com note, it is often the big games against the best opponents that determine the absolute value of any player, and Romagnoli stumbled once again.

Even before the poor marking on De Vrij, during the first half he was left helplessly chasing Romelu Lukaku to the byline after he misjudged the run of the Belgian, and Matias Vecino should have done better from the pull-back.

Errors in evaluation, of reading the game, struggles during one-on-one battles against top players (remember Dybala’s goal in the match with Juventus?): these are situations that are beginning to repeat themselves over time and that sow more than a few doubts.

The best of Romagnoli came out with a leader next to him, ushc Alex at the beginning of his Milan adventure, Leonardo Bonucci two seasons ago and even Gabriel Paletta at times.

Looking at his long-term Milan future, Romagnoli’s contract expires in June 2022, and he changed his agent to become represented by Mino Raiola earlier this season.

Atletico Madrid have asked for information on the 25-year-old, while Barcelona itself carried out surveys during the talks over Jean-Clair Todibo.

The Rossoneri have been left to reflect, the report concludes, because in the current squad there is nobody considered unsellable.

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has revealed that he is ‘angry’ with his players for ignoring their defensive responsibilities during Sunday night’s defeat to Inter.

Milan let a two-goal half time lead slip in Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina against Inter, eventually losing 4-2 after a roaring comeback.

After 45 minutes it looked as though the Rossoneri were heading for a rare ‘away’ derby success as goals from Ante Rebic and Zlatan Ibrahimovic had put them in a commanding position.

However, Inter came out and drew themselves level soon after the break, scoring first through Marcelo Brozovic and then through Matias Vecino.

Stefan De Vrij made it 3-2 with a header from a corner before Romelu Lukaku added a fourth and final goal deep into injury time.

Pioli was interviewed by Sky Italia after the game, and his words were transcribed by MilanNews.it.

“The first half was born from the strategy studied during the week, in the second half there were two episodes where we had to do much better,” he said.

“We were strong in the game, the two goals changed the game. Then we had the chance to equalise, but in those first two goals our carelessness weighed. We penalised an important performance.

“The games change and we had to be much more careful, Inter are much more experienced than us and used to playing certain games. They also had a bit of luck, we hit two posts.

“I was angry with the players because we had defensive tasks. It was the best performance, we put a strong opponent under pressure who had 19 more points. With more attention we would now be here to talk about a different game.

“We had a great game, it is absolutely the best first half of the season. We lost badly in the second half but we have to start from the first half. The performance must be analysed well, I am absolutely convinced of the quality of my team, but we must insist about carelessness.

“We can’t leave Brozovic alone to shoot, not read Sanchez’s cut … It was a shame not to be able to equalise with Ibra’s chance.”

On pressing: “It is clear that you cannot always be aggressive in the opponent’s half. It was unthinkable to have Inter play the whole game in their own half, the team knew that the game was not over after the first half. Two carelessness they complicated the rest of the race.

“I have to be bitter, I have to make these players understand that if we want to stay at a certain level, attention and lucidity are too important.

#Ibrahimovic: "I showed that at 38 I can still make a difference." Not all "expert" purchases can have the value of Zlatan, but it is clear that only with young people some games are not won, it is urgent to change the market register in summer #Milan

*Gattuso to leave in June?*

Following Napoli’s 3-2 defeat to relegation battlers Lecce, there is a report suggesting that Rino Gattuso’s contract with the club won’t be extended beyond June.

Gattuso was hired by the club in the aftermath of Carlo Ancelotti’s sacking in mid December.

Despite victories against Lazio and Juventus, Gattuso has struggled to turn the Partenopei’s fortunes around.

Following their latest defeat, Calciomercato.it believe there is a chance that Gattuso’s time with the club won’t extend further than June, with President Aurelio De Laurentiis looking at alternatives.

The website states that under Gattuso’s tutelage, Napoli have earned fewer points, scored fewer goals, and conceded more than they did under Ancelotti at the beginning of the season.

According to the report, De Laurentiis could replace Gattuso with one of Ivan Juric, Gian Piero Gasperini or Luciano Spalletti for next season.

Pioli: “The first half saw our strategy work very well and perhaps we deserved to be more than 2-0 up.

“Unfortunately, those two incidents where we should’ve done much, much better changed the game on a level of mentality. Conceding two goals in three-four minutes made all the difference.

“I am angry with my players, because we had some defensive duties in those situations and the moment we let it go, we were punished.

“It’s a real pity, as we were in control and out-playing a strong team, making it look like there was never a 19-point gap between us. We had defensive duties and we did not perform them.

“It was absolutely our best first half of the season, but we lost a derby that we had been winning, and we must build on the qualities we showed in that first half. The match must be analysed on the whole.

“I have to be angry, I have to be upset, because I need to get it into the minds of these players that they are capable of great things if they avoid those errors.”

Former Milan and Inter defender Fulvio Collovati “certainly expected more” from Rossoneri captain Alessio Romagnoli.

The 62-year-old Italy legend watched two of his old clubs face off in an exhilarating Derby della Madonnina last night, Inter coming back from 2-0 down to win 4-2.

“I consider Romagnoli to be the best defender at Milan, so I certainly expected more from him,” Collovati told MilanNews.it.

“He had a good first half, but has to bear some responsibility also for Stefan de Vrij’s goal, even with the extraordinary twist the Dutchman got on that header.

“In a difficult moment that Milan were going through at the start of the second half, Romagnoli should’ve taken the situation in hand.

“He’s a very good player, but needs to improve in terms of character.”
