According to @CorSport Milan has asked for more clarity and uniformity of judgment by the refereeing class, after the controversies that emerged following the first leg of the the Italian Cup against Juventus.

The Milan club is wondering about the meter taken by referee Valeri on Davide Calabria's handball whistled in the 91st minute, and to fully understand the discriminants of a rule that is creating confusion even among the players themselves.

*Napoli president threatens to sue referees over poor VAR calls*

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has said that he is prepared to take referees to court over damages in future if they do not consult VAR.

The Serie A side feel that they have been on the wrong end of numerous decisions this season, with the latest controversial incident cropping up during their 3-2 loss to Lecce last weekend as Arkadiusz Milik was booked for a dive in the box.

Referee Antonio Giua refused to review the call on the monitor, despite replays showing that the Poland international had his ankle clipped.

With this in mind, De Laurentiis lashed out at the official when speaking to Corriere dello Sport.

“I always maintained that any system of assistance that is intermittent or optional is inconceivable. It must be obligatory. If a referee, either through incompetence or arrogance, does not use VAR, he is committing a sporting crime, because he compromises the result,” he fumed.

“Football is not just a game. It is also an industry that produces very significant economic results.”

He believes that poor calls should be made punishable in courts.

“Why not? The principle of ‘you pay for mistakes’ aids all democratic processes and football is no different. If a judge emits the wrong sentence, he can be called to repay damages. Should a referee not be held to the same rules?” he said.

“Napoli have been denied numerous penalties this season. It’s not just me saying that, but recognised throughout the media. If this chain reaction of errors should turn into a financial loss of €200m, who would pay us back for that?

“I think top level lawyers would enjoy taking this on. Never say never. Plus, if five, six or seven clubs who were damaged by serious refereeing errors were to decide to stop the Serie A season?

“It would perhaps be traumatic, but still an efficient way of breaking the back of this laissez-faire attitude and carelessness.”

As a potential solution, he suggested that a tennis-style challenge system be launched.

“The challenge is the very least they could do and is probably already too late,” he argued.

“I think two challenges per game, one in each half, would suffice. The coaches have the right to demand verification in the most dubious cases and can also step in front of the monitor with the referee to get a clear explanation for the decision that has been made. That is a sacrosanct right of the coach.”

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini agreed when speaking to Sportsweek magazine, stating: “In my view, the technology has totally failed. The objective was to provide justice in incidents of clear and obvious error, but instead it is doing the contrary. VAR ended up creating even bigger doubts.

“When you are faced with footage that is so obvious and still make a mistake, that turns into a very dangerous boomerang.”

Agent of Allegri responds directly to Milan speculation and rumours of agreement with Man Utd

The agent of Massimiliano Allegri has responded directly to speculation linking his client with a return to AC Milan this summer.

As qualifying for the Champions League is getting more difficult by the week, the rumours of which manager will replace Stefano Pioli at Milan have started.

According to reports from SportMediaset over the weekend, Milan are working on bringing Allegri back to the San Siro, but the club’s project doesn’t seem to convince the former Juventus boss. Instead, he wants a team capable of competing at the highest level.

Their report added that Manchester United or PSG could be potential options as Allegri is likely to move abroad, which stacks up with il Corriere dello Sport’s report last week claiming that the ex-Juve boss already has a deal with an ‘important English club’.

Giovanni Branchini – the representative of Allegri – spoke to La Politica nel Pallone, and his words were transcribed by MilanNews.it.

“Allegri is recharging his batteries and preparing for new adventures,” he said.

“Where will we see him? It is difficult to evaluate, sure there is a predilection for a solution abroad but at the moment there are no negotiations or agreements.

“Milan hypothesis? At the moment it is just one of the many press speculations but there is nothing. I don’t think they will change manager.”

Milan boss Stefano Pioli has named his 21-man squad against Torino in Serie A on Monday night. Calhanoglu is not included due to injury.

Calhanoglu was not called up for Milan-Torino due to an injury to the right iliopsoas muscle. The Turkey international was expected to start in behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a 4-2-3-1, meaning the Rossoneri manager now has an important tactical decision to make regarding that particular role.

Meanwhile, midfield duo Lucas Biglia (out for the season) and Rade Krunic plus defender Leo Duarte are all out through injury. Andrea Conti is suspended too, meaning that Davide Calabria is almost certain to start at right-back.

Full List
GK: Begovic, A.Donnarumma, G.Donnarumma

DF: Calabria, Gabbia, Theo Hernandez, Kjaer, Laxalt, Musacchio, Romagnoli

MF: Bennacer, Bonaventura, Brescianini, Kessie, Paqueta, Saelemaekers

FW: Castillejo, Ibrahimovic, Leao, Daniel Maldini, Rebic

#ACMilan have only lost one Monday night Serie A home game in their history (12P, 6W, 5D).

The defeat came back in 1934 against Triestina as Nereo Rocco scored the winner. He would go on to become a Milan Hall of Fame member.

Player Ratings: AC Milan 1-0 Torino – Rebic decisive, Paqueta disappointing

By Fred Ilondo - 17 February 2020, 22:56

AC Milan successfully bounced back from their derby defeat in the league, beating Torino at the San Siro thanks to another goal from Ante Rebic. Down below are the player ratings.
STARTING XI

Donnarumma (6.5 ): Didn’t have to make too many saves as the defence was mostly impeccable. However, as always, he did his job when he was called upon.

Calabria (6): Though he has had better performances in the past, the right-back is slowly improving and should definitely build on this positive performance.

Kjaer (6): Despite being forced to come out early due to an injury, Kjaer offered a lot in defence, keeping Torino’s attack quiet when he was still on the pitch.

Romagnoli (6.5): Confident, focused and imposing. The Milan captain delivered another impressive performance to prove once again that he’s one of the most consistent players in this team.

Hernandez (6): Even though he has delivered way better performances this season, the Frenchman continues to be a reliable asset for the Rossoneri. There is a lot to improve but this was another solid display.

Castillejo (6.5): Another incredible performance from the Spaniard who delivered an assist for Ante Rebic’s goal, cementing himself as one of the most crucial players in this team.

Kessie (6): Playing in a more defensive role has benefited the Ivorian massively, as he keeps improving every week. He was once again a very tough opponent, dominating the midfield and recovering every ball.

Bennacer (6.5): Another solid display by Bennacer, though, his habit of collecting yellows in every game is becoming a problem for his team. Then again, he continued to be a leader of the play.

Rebic (7 – MOTM): With yet another goal, Ante Rebic proved once again how reliable he is this season. Despite disappearing a couple of times in the second half, the Croatian was mostly outstanding.

Paqueta (5.5): Though he wasn’t exactly bad, as he helped set up Rebic’s goal and pressed the opponents well, the Brazilian was sloppy with his decisions and his passing at times was embarrassingly poor.

Ibrahimovic (6): Far from perfect performance by the Swede, considering what the fans expect. Despite missing a crucial chance in the second half, Zlatan was quite useful in the build-up, which is always a welcome addition in these type of games.

SUBSTITUTES
Gabbia (6): A positive debut from the young centre-back who did enough to cover for Simon Kjaer after an early injury.

Bonaventura (6): Brought new life to the midfield in the second half, despite coming on in a difficult time in the game when Torino were pushing for an equalizer. He pressed well and help his teammates circulate the ball quickly from the defence to the attack.

🗣 Pioli offers key fitness update on Calhanoglu and Musacchio; gives Bennacer area to improve.

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has offered an update on the fitness of two key players after Monday night’s win over Torino.

It wasn’t a vintage performance from the Rossoneri at San Siro, however they obtained a 1-0 victory thanks to a first half effort from Ante Rebic.

Pioli was forced into a change on the day of the game as Hakan Calhanoglu missed out with a muscle problem; Lucas Paqueta coming in to replace him as the trequartista in the only change from Thursday’s draw with Juventus.

Then, in the 44th minute Pioli was forced into an early change though as young centre-back Matteo Gabbia came on for his Serie A debut, replacing Simon Kjaer who landed awkwardly when clearing a ball for a corner.
Pioli spoke to the media after the game in his press conference, and his words were transcribed by MilanNews.it.

“Calhanoglu had a problem against Juventus. He shouldn’t be long, there is a chance he will play on Saturday. Kjaer had something during the stretch, he says it shouldn’t be anything serious. Hopefully he will be alright, because we are facing an important period,” Pioli said.

“Musacchio was about to enter and he told me that in the warm-ups he had a problem in his calf. Hopefully it is nothing serious. He is certainly not happy yes, like all the team members who are on the bench.”

If there is room to dream of a top four finishes: “There is only room to prepare well for the next match in 5 days. It is a difficult match against a strong Fiorentina, then we will think about the standings from Saturday evening.”

On the 45,000+ crowd at San Siro: “The fans are fantastic, they encourage us every Sunday. They are only to thank, today we were eleventh in the standings before the game and we entered a passionate stadium that incited us. The results became positive thanks to the environment.”

Ismael Bennacer produced another excellent performance in the midfield alongside Franck Kessie, and the Algeria international is fast becoming on of the first names on the team-sheet.

“He is doing well and is growing. In my opinion he holds the ball too much in certain situations, but he is growing. He is a player of excellent temperament,” Pioli said.

“I don’t think he takes yellow cards because the others don’t work. We are working well in the defensive phase. His generosity every now and then leads him to be less lucid. It is a growth that will come, because he is a boy willing and convinced. To play there you have to play simpler, touching the ball less.”

Milan defender Matteo Gabbia enjoyed his Serie A debut in the 1-0 win against Torino on Monday night and thanked his teammates for the support.

The 20-year-old defender came on when Simon Kjaer had to be substituted before the break, but claimed he remained “calm” when called upon by coach Stefano Pioli.

Gabbia had only played eight minutes in the Coppa Italia previously, but now he is looking ahead and hopes to be involved against Fiorentina at the weekend.

“My grandparents, who have a subscription at the Milanello to watch me train, will surely be happy,” Gabbia told Sky Sport Italia. “I tried to do my best.

“The club decided to take this path with me. I thank my teammates a lot. They helped me grow.

“Let’s see if I will play against Fiorentina. I try to improve every day; I do what the coach asks of me. The training helped me a lot. Now, let’s see what happens.

“I will enjoy tonight, but then I will go back to the hard work tomorrow.”

“I try to learn from Kjaer and Romagnoli. They can teach me a lot. Seein [Paolo] Maldini, [Alessandro] Nesta and Thiago Silva helped me. When Pioli called me, I was calm.”

He continued to thank his teammates and pointed out how important the first-team coach Filippo Galli had been to help him develop.

“I had worked well during all these months. When you enter the pitch, it all depends on you,” he added. “I have to thank my teammates.

“[Zlatan] Ibrahimovic congratulated me. It’s not a lot of words, but the compliments given are enough for me,

“Filippo Galli was important for me, to help me change from midfield to defence. When you make such a transition at a young age, it’s difficult to interpret, but now you can see the results.”

5 talking points from AC Milan vs Torino

*Rebic continuing impressive form*
That’s now five goals in his last five Serie A games, while he’s also bagged a goal and an assist in two Coppa Italia outings since the turn of the year.

He looks a real threat in the final third when he’s in possession, but it’s his killer instinct in the box which is making him pivotal for us right now.

His finish to break the deadlock was a composed, controlled effort into the back of the net to show the level of confidence he has in front of goal now and he’s firmly established himself as a decisive figure in the side who simply can’t be left out.

*Castillejo adding quality to work ethic*
That’s now four assists this season for the Spaniard, and similarly to Rebic, his upturn in form has come in 2020 as three of those have been delivered in the last few weeks.

Castillejo offers a superb work ethic as displayed in his defensive work off the ball, but the big test was always going to be if he could couple that with quality in the final third.

He’s starting to show more positive signs, and although there is still plenty of room for improvement, as seen with the second-half chance he squandered, he’s moving in the right direction. Having snapped up the chance to cement his place in the side on the right flank, he’s starting to deliver consistently.

*Paqueta struggles to take chance*
It was a big night for the Brazilian as he got his chance to play off Zlatan Ibrahimovic with Hakan Calhanoglu ruled out due to injury.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a particularly positive performance as there were too many sloppy moments and misplaced places which outweighed the positive bits of play that he was involved in.

It remains to be seen when he’ll next get a chance in the starting XI, or perhaps in the line up at all, as he simply wasn’t able to grab his opportunity and prove his worth with a much-needed big performance and that is a real disappointment given I was rooting for him to produce.

*Bennacer could be dominant with right midfield partner*
The bookings are an ongoing concern and he does need to tidy up that aspect of his game, as that’s now 11 cautions for the season.

However, his positive play in possession coupled with his combative work off the ball continue to see him shine in our midfield, and it could be argued that if he gets the right partner in the heart of the side, he could be even more dominant.

Tiemoue Bakayoko’s name has been mentioned a lot on social media as an ideal midfield partner for Bennacer, but whether it’s a return for the Frenchman or the arrival of a player with similar characteristics, Milan will perhaps be considering a signing in that department to really allow the Algerian international to fulfil his full potential.

*Serie A debut for Gabbia, bright future ahead*
There was a big moment for the 20-year-old as he made his Serie A debut, and judging from this performance, Stefano Pioli will surely have no concerns over showing faith in him again moving forward.

For those that followed our pre-season campaign, Gabbia already looked impressive and could arguably count himself a little unlucky not to have featured this year.

However, he slotted in really well after Simon Kjaer was forced off with an injury, as he showed good awareness, positioning and looked comfortable playing it out from the back too.

We’ve seen a number of our young talents come and go in recent years with Manuel Locatelli and Patrick Cutrone coming to mind. It’s hoped that Gabbia can carve himself out a permanent spot in the squad moving forward and if Kjaer and Mateo Musacchio are psidelined, he has a big chance of doing so in the coming weeks.

Rangnick wants Milan, the club is divided over the future. The problem is the rejection arrived by Paolo Maldini . The current manager of the technical area snubbed Rangnick's candidacy days ago, canceling all recent rumors about his future at Milan.
" It is not the right profile for Milan" - said Maldini , suggesting that he would consider a line different from that suggested by other members of the club.

Milan at the moment seems divided. The current technical area does not consider Rangnick an ideal character to lead the club in the future, but would even support the confirmation of Stefano Pioli . A 'normalizer' who at least restored the team's character and humility.

The Elliott estate instead seems to push for Rangnick . Engaging the German would mean focusing on a 360 ° man, useful both as a coach and as a sports director.

Rangnick is in a hurry: he would like more consideration and would be ready to say yes to Milan immediately. He even asks to be announced in the coming weeks, so he can start working on the new project. Now everything is possible, although the results will most likely make the difference on the field as usual.

Theo Hernandez has arguably been AC Milan's best players thus far this season, performing at a very high level ever since his arrival from Real Madrid in the summer. Certainly, he has revolutionized the Rossoneri's left side.

With six goals and two assists in 23 games, the numbers speak for themselves. This makes him Milan's joint-top goalscorer along with Ante Rebic, who has been another successful signing for the San Siro side (although it took him a few months).

On Twitter, Hernandez was asked by a fan about potentially captaining Milan in the future. The Frenchman, of course, expressed his enthusiasm about the idea: “Can you imagine it? It would be a dream”.

The Rossoneri managed to land him for just €20m in the summer (via Transfermarkt), which certainly was a bargain. In fact, he's most likely worth double that by now, as many big clubs are keeping their eyes on him. However, he could stay at Milan for long.

AC Milan legend Ruud Gullit – present at the Laureus ceremony of 2020 – spoke to SportMediaset about his former club’s situation, issuing a warning to the Rossoneri regarding Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Stefano Pioli’s side have only lost one game since the Swede arrived (the derby), turning things around after what was a miserable first half to the season. However, although the decision to bring him in has given immediate effect, Milan need more for the future.

This was something that Gullit made clear in the interview, stating that Ibrahimovic can’t be the one responsible for moving the club in the direction. Of course, though, he praised the 38-year-old in the process.

“Milan? They spent €200m on players who didn’t make expectations. Ibrahimovic? He’s fantastic, but he’s 38 years old. He can’t be responsible for changing the team.

“They should start again from Boban and Maldini, give them time to rebuild the Rossoneri identity,” he concluded.

It remains to be seen if Milan can make the Champions League cut, with just 14 games left of the season. Atalanta are currently 12 points ahead of the Rossoneri, which means that it will be a very tough mission to pull off.

*Eintracht open for Rebic to Milan*

Eintracht Frankfurt director Bruno Hubner assures Milan “can separate” the deals regarding Ante Rebic and Andre Silva. “We didn’t have time to set a purchase option.”

The two strikers swapped clubs on two-season loans on the final day of the summer transfer window and at first Rebic struggled to make an impact at San Siro.

The change of tactical system has brought the best out of him, scoring five goals in his last five Serie A appearances.

It’s reported the Rossoneri are now working on a permanent transfer for the Croatia international and Eintracht Frankfurt are open to negotiations.

“As the transfer was done minutes before the deadline, we didn’t have time to agree any kind of set purchase option or figures,” director of sport Hubner told Kicker.

“Both the deals were done very quickly. At the start, these were connected, but we can separate them.”

Andre Silva has scored five goals and provided two assists in 19 competitive games for Eintracht Frankfurt.
