Gerry Cardinale is back in Milan to help see the team into the new season and his arrival could have a decisive impact on the pursuit of Youssouf Fofana.

As highlighted by Calciomercato.com, there is a lot on the agenda for the American-Italian businessman and the fans will be most intrigued to see if he can help to secure a deal for the AS Monaco midfielder.

The primary reason for the timing of this trip to Milan is the Silvio Berlusconi Trophy match against Monza on Tuesday night which Cardinale will be attending.

That is not all though, as he will also meet Paulo Fonseca and Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Milanello for an update on the general running of the team, as well as getting transfer updates from Casa Milan as the window moves into its final couple of weeks.

The club are expected to intensify their pursuit of the French midfielder in the coming days and having Cardinale in the building will speed up the process of launching a new bid.

Fofana has made it clear to Monaco that he would like to join Milan and the Ligue 1 side has left him out of the Joan Gamper Trophy team to face Barcelona.

The talks between AC Milan and Juventus have suddenly intensified in the last few hours, and it is not just Pierre Kalulu that the two clubs are discussing.

According to what is being reported by Tuttosport (via MilanNews), Juventus are considering proposing a swap deal involving Federico Chiesa and Alexis Saelemaekers in addition to trying to wrap up the signing of Kalulu.

Negotiations for the possible renewal of Chiesa’s contract with Juve have not got very far and Cristiano Giuntoli is looking for a solution. However, all the potential buyers for the forward are waiting either until the end of the mercato or even next summer to get him on a free transfer.

The Juventus sporting director has identified Saelemaekers as the perfect bargaining chip. Chiesa could go to Milan where he would be guaranteed the opportunity to play in the Champions League and would also find himself in a formation that suits him.

The problem is his salary: Chiesa would have to lower his pay to stay within the ceiling of €4.5m net per player per season set by the Rossoneri, an amount they have exceeded only for Rafael Leao. It is not a given that this will happen, given the Italian is entering his prime and wants a good contract.

Juve have ‘chosen’ Saelemaekers as a possible counterpart because he is coming off a great season with Thiago Motta at Bologna. At the same time, despite Paulo Fonseca’s words of appreciation and his intention to keep the Belgian player, it is not certain that he will remain.

Instead, if the right opportunity were to come along, he would be sold for a figure of around €15m, which is the same amount that Juve want for Chiesa. Something that started as a wild suggestion could become something more concrete, the paper concludes.

Both Ibrahimovic and Fonseca have confirmed in recent press conferences that Milan:
  • needs 1 more player according to Fonseca — a defensive midfielder (Fofana)
  • has all the players we need in other positions according to Fonseca
  • no more additions in attack expected according to Ibra
  • will assess if they need something extra in defense according to Ibra
  • will need to make decisions on departures (Kalulu for sure and at least 1 more) according to Fonseca and Ibra

Milan will still make at least 2 signings — Fofana and an Italy-raised player unless they plan to promote an eligible player from the Primavera for that spot like Nava, Bartesaghi or Zeroli who we all thought would be starting as Milan Futuro players

🚨🚨🌕 | BREAKING: AC Milan have submitted an improved bid to sign Youssouf Fofana: €20m fixed fee + difficult bonuses.

AS Monaco are now asking €25M + easy bonuses to let Fofana leave.

No agreement yet but talks ongoing.

❗Kalulu, before giving his final go ahead, wants to speak with Thiago Motta and the management to understand what his role will be in the squad and what the objectives are. He wants to be a starter at Juventus.

Pierre Kalulu could potentially be on the move shortly with Juventus looking to add the Frenchman to their defence, and Franco Ordine has offered his say about whether AC Milan should part with the defender.

It is difficult to evaluate Kalulu, a player who has been regularly troubled with injury, and a player who, seemingly, has no place within the current squad, and so this poses a difficult question.

Juventus have approached Milan with the idea of a loan, with an option to buy the Frenchman, and although the terms are still being finalised, there is a growing possibility that he will leave the club this summer.

Whilst he missed last night’s game against Monza, reports from this morning confirmed that the defender was back in training with the squad this morning, albeit with the fact that some ‘decisive hours’ were upcoming.

Ordine spoke to Derbyderby.it about the potential transfer and his words have been relayed by Milan News.

“Let’s line up the essential aspects. First: Milan solves a problem for Juve, a guaranteed rival in the championship. As Silvano Ramaccioni said in his time: “You can make a mistake buying a player, not selling him.

“Second: Kalulu is not a starter for Milan, a fifth central defender, he would not play much and he knows it. Third: he is coming back from a season full of injuries, the first of which -at Napoli- left some worrying marks. Fourth: the valuation of the Frenchman is correct and would allow a rich capital gain. Fifth: the chosen modalities [a loan with right of redemption] are the weak point of the deal.

“An obligation under certain conditions would be needed. A deal should be concluded but changes must be made.”

“*” = Players on the 17-man list reported to be available for transfer by the management — in decreasing order of likelihood to be sold:
  • Kalulu [ALMOST DONE]
  • Adli [VERY LIKELY]
  • Bennacer [LIKELY]
  • Saelemaekers [UNLIKELY]

Following Fofana’s arrival, Milan must now work to be in compliance with Serie A and Champions League squad rules.

They must offload 2 players from the squad’s 17-man list and bring in a player to fill the last Italy-raised spot either via a new signing or via promotion of an eligible Primavera player who has played at Milan/in Italy for at least 3 years between the ages of 15 and 21 such as:
  • Nava (GK)
  • Bartesaghi (DEF)
  • Zeroli (MID)
  • Traore (ATT)

For every further signing that is not Italy-raised and not under 22 that Milan makes (such as Samardzic), they must offload another player from the 17-man squad list to make space for the new signing.

Milan hope to sell Ismael Bennacer to the Saudi Pro League and Yacine Adli to Qatar, which would allow them to go for Manu Koné of Borussia Monchengladbach.

It has been known for some time that the two players were on the market this summer and that Koné was their first choice once there was room in the midfield.

Bennacer and Adli not in Milan plans
According to Sky Sport Italia, the first steps in that domino effect are starting to happen, with several Saudi Pro League teams in talks with Bennacer.

The favourites could well be Al-Qadsiah FC, the same club that is on the verge of signing Paulo Dybala from Roma.

Adli might be a little more difficult to place, as he has rejected some Premier League proposals already, but the Qatar Stars League might be able to change his mind.

Once Bennacer is out, then the Rossoneri can go in for Koné, who is also of interest to fellow Serie A side Roma and has a price-tag of around €20m.
