Kenya at 50 - Celebrating Kenya's 50th birthday and the many faces of Kenya

Hongera Kenya. Pamoja na shida mlizonazo mnajaribu kuonesha njia ya kupita East Africa.
Tupo pamoja.

And yet you boast of speaking better English than Tanzanians!
Obviously, we do, it's a superior language with many benefits. Its mastery eases comprehension of most of the world's dynamism. We don't have to be 100% fluent, but the fact that it's now widely spoken in the country, that alone puts us in the readiness for greater heights to come. Swahili (which is also foreign) is pathetic and lacks a lot, and yes even most Tanzanians speaks and write very broken Swahili, they only add flavor to it by using some common accent, but the grammar is normally pathetic.

At least in Kenya we have onyango Okello, Kamau Wambugu, Mutiso Kyalo on black skins. We do not Michael Jason, and David Hassan on black skins to hide where we were born , The Chagga in Tanzania do just that.

What constitutes tribalism? Is it bearing the name of your ancestors? It is speaking your native tongue? It is folly to think you are not tribal simply because your name is not 'African'. I tend to think tribalism is a state of the mind, manifested in your actions and no amount of Western, Arabic or Asian names will change that. It is our actions and thoughts that make us tribal, not the names we bear and the languages we speak. I could very well converse exclusively in English and Kiswahili and still be tribal in my thinking, politics and actions. I pity the African that thinks the panacea for tribalism is a simple change of label.
Is it possible to be nationalistic while belonging to a particular tribe? If can feel a sense of belonging to the schools we attend, the clubs we patronize, the football teams we support - all irrespective of our genetic make-up, doesn't it then prove that being tribal is a mental choice, that has no relation whatsoever to what we look like or what we are called? You can be as American and as Christian as you would like with a name such as Barrack (Baraka if you like) Hussein Obama. On the other hand you could be a tribal bigot masquerading as 'John Peter' or 'Dominicus Alphaxard'.
On a lighter note, since African traditions and customs are dynamic and we are constantly borrowing from other cultures, those Western names are now part of our history and therefore there should be no problem with being a Reginald(of course said with my grandmother's pronunciation!) and an African!

Well, that is mental slavery. With this kind of attitude you will always feel inferior to the white man.

Do you discuss anything else other than the perceived superiority of your kiswahili?

So you think by speaking Swahili (which came from Arabs) makes you superior to white man. Very funny coming across some Tanzanian sagging trouser and claiming to be free from Western culture. Actually, you should stop emulating the West by living like a typical African. Stop driving cars, go to the forest and dress in animal skin, in other words, get rid of anything and everything that was invented by the white man including internet and the smart phone you're using. Further more ask your government to stop borrowing from the West because you speak Swahili.
Read history and free yourself from ignorance, most of you embraced Swahili and Islam from Arabs while most of us espoused English and Christianity from the white man.

50 years of "independence" and you are still talking in broken English like a native in a British colony. What a waste!

Yeah I speak in English, it makes me feel more sophisticated, confident and enlightened. Grammar to me is not very important than being understood. Most European and Americans too have a problem with grammar, similarly, even most of you Bongos don't speak fluent Swahili. Anybody who has done Swahili literature can pick myriads of grammatical errors in what you write and speak. Yet you were given this language by Arabs centuries ago, should I consider it a waste too.
