Stop unfair labels, warns team:

By BERNARDINE MUTANU mutanu06@yahoo.com

The Ministry of Justice has decried the blanket condemnation of some Kenyans as sympathisers of Al-Shabaab militia.

He said by the fact that people are either Muslims or Somalis, it does not mean that they belong to Al-Shabaab. "Anybody can be Al-Shabaab, we have people like Ndung'u, Mwangi, Wanyonyi and Bwire.

"Some sections of Kenyans feel that a certain religion is being subjected to uncomfortable situations, they think that it is Somalis involved in these activities, which is not the case," he said in Nyeri during a public forum on the policy.

He implored on the government to ensure that the operation in Eastleigh, Nairobi, does not target people from a specific ethnic group.

"People who are closing their businesses in Eastleigh for fear of being attacked on suspicion they could be members of the group should not do so because up to now there is no one who has been threatened.

The government is interested in Al-Shabaab adherents and not Somalis or anyone doing genuine business," he said.

November 15, 2011: About 2,000 Kenyan troops have been in southern Somalia for a month now, and recent operations have been delayed by heavy rains. Even without that, the operation has been characterized by precise and deliberate movements and efforts to minimize Kenyan and Somali civilian casualties. Al Shabaab has been skirmishing with Kenyan troops, but not doing much damage (five dead so far). Kenyan troops go where they want and are frequently patrolling the area up to a hundred kilometers from the border. Most al Shabaab gunmen appear to have withdrawn to the towns of Kismayu (their major port) and Afmadow (a major trading center inland). Kenyan troops are moving to surround Kismayu, or at least control all the roads. Same with Afmadow, which is at the center of the local road network. Kenya is apparently reluctant to attack these two towns, and suffer heavy casualties.

The Kenyans have gained much support in southern Somalia by bringing with them food and other aid for locals. The troops reduced the widespread banditry, and the locals have been reciprocating by discreetly (to avoid al Shabaab retaliation) providing information. There are pro-Kenyan forces in the border area. These include troops working for the TNG (Transitional National Government) and the local Ras Kamboni militia (which has been fighting al Shabaab for years.) Kenya has offered to support an autonomous territory along the border (called Jubaland), if the Somalis in charge can keep al Shabaab out of Kenya.

Al Shabaab efforts to retaliate with terror attacks inside Kenya have not been very successful
. In response, the Kenyans offered an amnesty to pro-terrorist Somalis in Kenya. Over 30 people in Kenya have accepted the amnesty and provided information on al Shabaab operations (mainly fund raising and recruiting) in Kenya.

In Mogadishu, the AU (African Union) peacekeepers believe that al Shabaab has been forced out of 98 percent of the city. There are still a hundred or more al Shabaab men operating in the city.

Somali pirates are running into more resistance, but are still getting large ransoms (over $100 million so far this year). The warship patrols are more effective, partly because of increased air reconnaissance. Merchant ships are more frequently protected by armed guards, and are more alert to approaching pirates. As a result, only about 12 percent of pirate attacks have succeeded this year. While many nations with large merchant marine fleets want to attack the pirate bases, no one has stepped up to do the deed. Meanwhile, about a thousand pirates and supporters (financiers, ransom negotiators) are in custody around the world.

November 14, 2011: In Mogadishu, gunfire again broke out during food distribution at a refugee camp. TNG soldiers returned fire and at least two people were killed.

November 13, 2011: A large explosion in the town of Afgoye (40 kilometers northwest of Mogadishu) was believed to have been caused by UAVs firing missiles at an al Shabaab base there. There were secondary explosions from what was apparently an ammunition storage site. The town is currently a major al Shabaab base, and locals believed that al Shabaab leaders were holding a meeting when the attack took place. In the aftermath of all the explosions, hundreds of civilians fled the town, fearing more violence.

November 12, 2011: In the south, a Kenyan Army patrol found an al Shabaab camps, attacked, and killed nine of the Islamic terrorists, and wounding many more as the al Shabaab men fled. Four Kenyan soldiers were wounded.

November 8, 2011: In Mogadishu, a TNG legislator was shot and killed, apparently by al Shabaab.

November 7, 2011: In Mogadishu, two people were killed by a grenade tossed into a crowd. Al Shabaab took credit for this.

November 6, 2011: In the northern statelet of Somaliland, government troops clashed with a rebel militia, leaving four dead.

November 5, 2011: In northern Kenya, two people were killed by a grenade tossed into a crowd. Al Shabaab was believed responsible for this. Elsewhere in the area, a UN aid truck hit a landmine (which did not explode) and a bomb was found, and disabled, in an army camp. A roadside bomb did go off on a road to a refugee camp, but no one was injured.

Kenya has warned aircraft to stay away from al Shabaab controlled areas in southern Somalia. This is because of continued arms shipments being flown in from Eritrea. Kenya implies that such aircraft would be shot down.

In central Somalia, al Shabaab and local militias have been fighting for the last few days, leaving dozens dead or wounded.

The U.S. has warned its citizens to avoid Kenya until the al Shabaab terrorist threat subsides.

Somalia: Terrorists Fall Back

I'd put this on a different thread but it applies here so;

KDF could very easily put together an armoured column and smash everything between Garissa and Kismayu. The fact that they don't behave like a dictator's army does not mean that they are militarily incapable. By this stage of their operation, Ethiopia had already lost several hundred men (and had killed several thousand Somalis, not all of them combatants) but because it's a dictatorship, they could afford to expend the lives of their men like chicken without fearing a domestic backlash. Kenya is operating in a completely different political environment. That supposedly intelligent people here cannot even see this very simple thing is endlessly frustrating.

Where i will fault GoK is in their political planning because it's now emerging that there are several factions each hoping to benefit from Kenya's incursion and it is looking likely that once A.S falls, as they will, these factions may end up going at each other. Just the other day, one faction (a briefcase government if you've never seen one) was giving a press conference in Nairobi but Madoobe's militia are the one's on the ground which makes it easier for them to influence events. then you have prof. Gandi's faction and ASWJ (who're against Gandi) and all this before you even factor in the TFG. Managing these fractious Somalis is proving a fulltime job in itself and is partly why KDF has held off from taking Kismayu because it's likely that that's when the clan madness will resume.

Having said all the above, one of the objectives (buffer zone) has already been achieved and is now a fact on the ground. If you've been following closely, you'll have deduced that KDF is now "sanitising" the area.

The KDF are really helping us to secure our borders.whoever says that we could have used the GSU should be informed that sections of kenyan police(GSU and AP) who are mainly helping to police the areas under our control.you have noted that we have minimized our forward attacks because we are pacifying our territories to flush out alshabab militias while at the same time our army is sinking boreholes, building bridges by army engineering battalions. This is to win the support of locals and dislodging the fact that we are an occupying force.Information reaching me from men in the front says Raila has secured kenya a number of deadly weapons from Israel.will keep you posted.good day.

Israel increase in support for Kenya's al-Shabaab battle draws fresh threats

Israel will increase its support for Kenya's battle against Somalia's Islamist insurgents, officials said, in a move which drew threats of fresh attacks from the militants' al-Qaeda-linked leader

By Mike Pflanz, Nairobi. 3:36PM GMT 15 Nov 2011

Because "Christian" Kenya was reaching out to "Jews", Muslims had "a responsibility" to act, said a spokesman for al-Shabaab, the Somali jihadist group.

Shimon Peres, Israel's president, said his country would "make everything available" for Kenya to secure its borders and boost internal security as it continues its incursion into its anarchic neighbour.

There were few details of the surprise deal, which came a month after Kenya's invasion of Somalia to hunt down the Islamists.

But Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, said: "Kenya's enemies are Israel's enemies".

"We have similar forces planning to bring us down," he said after meeting Raila Odinga, Kenya's prime minister, who was visiting Jerusalem. "I see it as an opportunity to strengthen our ties."

News of the agreement immediately drew fresh threats from al-Shabaab, which has been fighting Somalia's Western-backed government since 2007.

"We want to tell the Muslim world that we have the same religion, the same faith and the same god," Mohammed Ali Rage, al-Shabaab's spokesman, said in a message broadcast on jihadist radio stations.

"It is their responsibility to support their Muslim brothers in Somalia because the Kenyan Christians are seeking support from the Jews in Israel." Analysts warned that publicly linking Israel to the Kenyan mission threatened to "erode" the broad backing for the offensive among moderate Somalis.

"This move will give [al-Shabaab] room to push the perception that this is not just Kenya fighting for itself, but that it is a coalition of Christian or non-Muslims fighting against Muslims," said Andrews Atta-Asamoah of the Institute for Security Studies in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.

"It would have been preferable to delay this, or to accept help covertly.

"Now al-Shabaab will be the beneficiary, it will get more funding, more recruits, and the support that Kenya was getting on the ground will be eroded."

The deal could also backfire within Kenya, said another Somalia expert in Nairobi.

"There are large numbers of radicalised Muslim youth in Kenya already, and this kind of thing, using megaphone diplomacy to boast that Israel's behind you, will do no end of harm to trying to contain them," he said.

Spokesman for al-Shabab militant group says Kenyan PM recently visited Israel to seek aid in 'destroying Muslim people and their religion.'
By The Associated Press

A spokesman for the Somali militant group al-Shabab said that Kenya's prime minister recently visited Israel to seek assistance in "destroying Muslim people and their religion."

Sheik Ali Mohamud Rage on Tuesday also warned Kenya that it still has a chance to withdraw its forces from neighboring Somalia because "things have not begun in earnest," a likely reference to threats to carry out terror attacks in Nairobi, Kenya's capital.

The office of Kenya's prime minister said Monday that Kenya received the backing of Israeli leaders to help Kenya fight what it called "fundamentalist elements." Kenyan Prime Minster Raila Odinga visited Israel Sunday and Monday and sought help building the capacity of his country's security forces.
Kenyan troops last month moved into Somalia to fight al-Shabab militants who in turn promised reprisal terror attacks in Nairobi.
"We tell Kenya that things have not began in earnest yet and it is now a month on. You still have a chance to go back to your border," Rage said.
Kenya said in a statement that President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised the East African nation help in securing its borders with Somalia.
A statement from the Odinga's office said Netanyahu promised to help build "a coalition against fundamentalism," bringing together the countries Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Tanzania. Kenya said that Peres said Israel was ready to make "everything available to Kenya" for internal security.
The Israeli government did not confirm any of statements made by Odinga's office. Israel said the meetings were a continuation of the deepening of Israel's relations with African countries.
Israeli security forces are among the best in the world in dealing with terror threats, making it logical for Kenya to seek security assistance. But al-Shabab could view Kenya's request as a provocation.
In 2002 militants bombed an Israeli-owned luxury hotel on Kenya's coast near the city of Mombasa, killing 13 people. The militants also tried to shoot down an Israeli airliner at the same time.

Bomb destroys Kenya police car in refugee camp
Daud Yussuf and Noor Ali. GARISSA, Kenya | Tue Nov 15, 2011 12:31pm EST

GARISSA, Kenya (Reuters) - A remote-controlled bomb blew up a police vehicle escorting a U.N. convoy in Kenya's Dadaab refugee camp near the border with Somalia on Tuesday, the second such incident in the camp this month.

A U.N. driver said the blast ripped through the back of the police jeep moments after the column of ten vehicles had left Hagadera, one of three camps in the sprawling complex, wounding two private security guards and two police officers.

Two refugees from the camp were arrested in connection with the attack, police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said in a statement.

Kenya has been plagued by a wave of attacks since it sent hundreds of soldiers into neighboring Somalia last month to crush the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militant group.

"The police car was at the front of the convoy. As we drove out of Hagadera we saw an explosion at the rear end of the landcruiser," said the driver who declined to be named.

"My car was third in the convoy," he said.

Abukar Mohamed, a local bus driver, said the blast took place a few hundred meters from the bus park where he was at the time, and sent people scrambling for shelter.

"I then ran to the site of the blast. The two G4S security guards were seriously wounded, they were bleeding all over. The two policemen had minor injuries," he said.

Witnesses said the attack left a two-meter crater in the sand track.

Unpacking the Israel-Kenya deal to help wage war in Somalia
by Alex Kane on November 16, 2011 4

kenyaBIG.jpgKenya's Prime Minister Raila Odinga met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on November 14 in Jerusalem (Photo: Israeli Government Press Office)

There's an important set of factors driving this deal, and it's worth unpacking some of them to explain why Israel is assisting Kenya.

First, Israel's massive war industry will benefit from Kenyan requests to "help Kenya's police force detect and destroy al-Shabab's networks...[and] provide vehicles for border patrols and equipment for sea surveillance to curb piracy off the East African coast." Israel has sold Kenya military equipment in the past, as ICAHD researcher and independent journalist Jimmy Johnson documents on his new website, but this deal will significantly expand that cooperation. Israeli arms companies will be profiting off a month-long war that has reportedly killed innocent civilians in Somalia.

Second, the deal is another opportunity for Israel to claim that its "enemies" are fundamentalist Islamists akin to al-Qaeda, as Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed. Netanyahu's claim is wrong (Hamas has actually cracked down on Islamist fundamentalists in Gaza) but it's a common trope pushed by the Israeli establishment and U.S. supporters of Israel in order to tie resistance to Israeli occupation to jihadist terrorism.

Third, the help is in line with broader Israeli attempts to "boost military sales in strife-torn Africa."

There is a history of Israel arming unsavory dictatorships and regimes around the world, from apartheid South Africa to countries in Latin America. As Phyllis Bennis writes in a chapter to Wrestling with Zion: Progressive Jewish-American responses to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Israel acted as a "surrogate" for the U.S. during the Cold War in Latin America, Asia and Africa, assisting brutal dictatorships in those regions. Kenya is no dictatorship, but the alleged killing of civilians in Somalia and ongoing investigations into post-election ethnic violence that Kenyan leaders allegedly fomented make clear that Israel has not changed its attitude towards countries that commit human rights abuses--a logical attitude considering Israel's own war crimes record.

Meanwhile, al Shabaab has slammed the Israel-Kenya deal, and the Associated Press is warning of the potential blow back to Israel Somali militants could inflict. As more innocent Somalis die as a result of Israeli-assisted Kenyan military action, the risk for more bloodshed on both sides increases.

Military cooperation ni kitu cha kawaida sababu its for the long term benefit. Kwenye vita vya dunia ya pili kulikuwa na cooperation ambayo iliitwa NATO kundi hili linaendelea kuexist na iliwajibika kumwondoa Hitler na makafara wake barani Uropa all because of military cooperation. Lakini kwa sababu watu hawakuwi objective katika hizi forums ndiposa naona this is just a waste of time. mambo ya kulinganisha KDF UPDF na wengine ni bure. referencing CIA world factbooks on military statistics si kitu chema because countries huwa na military budgets kila mwaka CIA factbooks do not have updated websites on africa military budgets. Ikiwa unataka real-time figure on kenyan military budgets and acquisations, tazama mtandao huu

http://www.armyrecognition.com/kenya_kenyan_army_land_ground_forces_uk/kenya_kenyan_army_land_ground_armed_defense_forces_military_equipment_armored_vehicles_intelligence_.html

There is much hype of kenya being "untested" sawa hatujakata lakini watanzania kitu ningewasihi musitamani vita hata hata siku moja na nchi yeyote.
