Kenya's AU Campaign: Deputy President William Ruto leads Kenya team on tour of several West African States

The government has stepped up the campaign to have CS Amina Mohamed to elected chairperson of the AU commission. Deputy President William Ruto is leading a government delegation to 7 West African Countries which includes Sierra Leone, Liberia , Cote d'Ivore , Chad seeking support for ambassador Amina Mohammed.

AU Commission chairperson election delayed for Senegalese diplomat

DAKAR – Senegalese diplomat Professor Abdoulaye Bathily has revealed that the president of his country, Macky Sall, intervened on his behalf to delay the election of a new chair for the AU Commission so that he could participate
Speaking at the launch in Dakar, Bathily said: “My candidacy is the culmination of an entire academic, political and diplomatic life at the service of pan-Africanism”.

Among the guests were various personalities from all parts of Africa. They included top-level political figures, academics and civil society members in Africa and Senegal.

Franco-Egyptian economist, Professor Samir Amin; Dr Patricia McFadden of South Africa; Cape Verde’s former minister of foreign afairs Dr Jose Brito; Dr Hesphina Rukato, a Pan African activist from Zimbabwe; Dr Conmany Wesseh, Liberian senator; Marie-Madeleine Kalala of the Democratic Republic of Congo; Dr Agostino Zacarias, Accord, South Africa; and Patricia McFadden of the Thabo Mbeki Institute for African leadership were among the guests.

Former Senegalese ministers and diplomats Amadou Kane, Ndioro Ndiaye and General Mansour Seck Ndiaye also attended the launch.

Throwing his weight behind Bathily, Amin said: “The task of the African Union is difficult and we need a candidate who will be able of rallying all countries of the continent.”

Commenting on the 69-year-old Senegalese diplomat’s candidature, McFadden said Africa “needs bold and innovative ideas from someone who knows its past and who contributed to its wealth to break the continent’s political path”. She added “it was time to push the door and create a different future for Africa”.

Cape Verde’s former minister of foreign affairs Brito said: “Bathily should be the bearer of this major break by positioning himself as an intellectual and man of the people who supports effective and efficient reform in the African Union.”

Bathily expressed “all my gratitude to the Senegalese President Macky Sall for endorsing me but also all my gratitude to the entire region in support of a single candidate for Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas)”.

Bathily said that his candidacy is the result of “almost 40 years in the service of Africa, for independence, stability and prosperity.”

Aminata Touré, Sall's Special Envoy, said: “President Macky Sall is your campaign manager.”

She added: “The president will bring all his weight to bear so that the candidate Abdoulaye Bathily can win the election.”

Other candidates for the position of chair of AU Commission include Kenyan Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, Agapito Mba Mokuy from Equatorial Guinea, Botswana Foreign Minister Pelonomi Venson Moitoi and Moussa Faki Mahamat from Chad.

Amina gets EAC backing for AU post


East African Foreign Affairs Ministers have endorsed their Kenyan counterpart Amina Mohamed’s bid to chair the African Union Commission.
The ministers; Uganda’s Sam Kutesa, Aimable Otis of Burundi and Rwanda’s Louise Mushikiwabo vowed to lobby other African heads of state to back Ambassador Mohamed’s candidature.
The Tanzanian Foreign Affairs minister Augustine Mahiga, who chairs the community council of foreign ministers, was represented by the country’s head of chancery at its High commission in Nairobi, Talha Mohamed.
The meeting held at the Villa Rosa Kempinsiki in Nairobi on Saturday, resolved that Ms Mohammed was the best for the job.
The Nairobi meeting comes just a day after Ms Mohammed accompanied Deputy President William Ruto in a campaign blitz in ten West and Central African countries to ask for their support in the January 2017 elections.
Ms Mohamed wants to replace South Africa’s Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma who has finished her four-year-term and did not seek a second term.

Candidates for African Union chairperson post to face off in a debate

Five aspirants of the African Union Chairperson position will face off in a debate on December 9 ahead of their election in January 2017.

The African Union Commission sent out invitation on Tuesday for the debate which will be in the town hall format at the Union’s headquarters in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. The Commission currently chaired by Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said the debate is meant to transform the union by giving “the broad African public an opportunity to be informed and participate in the work of the commission.”

The five candidates for the African Union Commission Chairperson position include: Botswana’s foreign minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, Chad’s foreign minister Moussa Faki Mahamat, Equatorial Guinea’s foreign minister Agapito Mba Mokuy, Kenya’s foreign minister Amina Mohamed and Senegal’s Bathily Abdoulaye who is the special UN envoy for Central Africa.

The South African Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has been the AU chairperson since 2012 and did not apply for a second term during the earlier nomination process. The new elections will be held during the 28th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government from January 30 to 31 at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

African Union to hold debate for candidates for the post of Chairperson of the African Union Commission

Debate will give candidates an opportunity to speak to African citizens, popularize the AU and give their vision for an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.

Addis Ababa, 1 December 2016: The African Union, through its African Union Leadership Academy (AULA) will convene the first ever leadership debate for candidates contesting for the position of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on 9 December 2016.

The debate, to be held at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia will be conducted before a live audience comprising members of the African Union Executive Council; members of Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), African Union Commissioners; media personnel and invited guests. It aims at popularizing the African Union and giving the candidates an opportunity to speak to African citizens and present their vision for the fulfilment of the AU vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.

Candidates contesting to replace outgoing Chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma of South Africa are Hon Pelonomi Venson- Moitoi of Botswana, Hon Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad, Hon Mba Mokuy of Equatorial Guinea, Hon Dr Amina C Mohamed of Kenya, and Dr Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal.
