South Africa, Zimbabwe back Botswana's candidate for AU top job

There are several other candidates fielded for the position of AU chair - although at this stage it looks like Kenya’s Amina Mohamed is the favourite. That can change, depending on the lobbying done these next few months.

Kenya had earlier claimed that South Africa supports Mohamed's bid, but earlier this week President Jacob Zuma and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said they're supporting the SADC candidate, Botswana's Foreign Affairs Minister Pelonomi Venson Moitoi.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday night formally launched Kenya’s candidature for the African Union Commission Chairperson position.

Speaking at State House Nairobi when he hosted African Envoys accredited to Kenya and their Kenyan counterparts from various Africa’s capitals, President Kenyatta described the candidate, Amb. Amina Mohamed as an experienced consensus-builder.

“I believe that we have a lady of courage and valour. Mine is to request you to lend your support for the candidature of Amb. Amina Mohamed with a promise that you will get a servant who will work for each one of us,” the President said.

President Kenyatta said he accepted to forward the name of Amb. Mohamed after wide consultations with his colleagues from across the continent and COMESA member countries Burundi, Comoros, D.R. Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe . It was after he got across the board consensus that he forwarded the name of Amb. Amina Mohamed, arguably when one of the best performing Cabinet Secretaries in Jubilee Government.

“We submitting a name of an individual who is a consensus builder, an individual who brings people together. An individual who is organised and will help us organise the African Union,” he said the President.

Adding: “You know Amb Amina as a focused public servant who is known for the positions she has taken on issues affecting Africa and Kenya and has been vocal even in the global arena.”

CS Mohamed while accepting the nomination said she aims to bring to the African Union Commission experience acquired over the years in public service and at the United Nations.

“I will strive to ensure that Africa’s dignity is never tampered with if elected as the chairperson. I will ensure the African Union delivers a better life for Africans,” she said.

“We have been politically emancipated. We are working hard to ensure we are economically emancipated. We also need to ensure that our institutions, systems and mechanisms are emancipated and that is what I hope to work on,” said CS Mohamed.

If elected, Amina will be succeeding South Africa’s Madam Nkosozana Dlamini-Zuma, the first woman to lead the continental body. Kenya is leaving nothing to chance and is rolling out a campaign that will reach all the 54 AU member states

Kenya has launched a major diplomatic campaign aimed at getting votes for Foreign Affairs CS Amina Mohamed to become the next African Union Commission chairperson.

The post is currently held by South Africa’s Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, who was elected in July 2012 for a four-year term.

Deputy President William Ruto is on a whirlwind tour of seven countries in West Africa. Mohamed has accompanied the DP on the tour.

“He is travelling to West Africa to solidify votes for Foreign Affairs CS Mohamed after 19 Comesa countries endorsed her,” David Mugonyi, the Communication Secretary at the DP’s Office, said.

“We have no doubt that if elected to the post, Mohamed will serve both her country and the continent as she has always done, with the highest level of excellence, ethics, integrity, passion and commitment.”

Ruto is in Chad, and will thereafter travel to Mali, Eritrea, DRC, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Egypt.

He will meet Presidents Idriss Déby of Chad, Ibrahim Keïta (Mali), Isaias Afwerki (Eritrea), Joseph Kabila (DRC), Ivory Coast’s Alassane Ouattara, Ghana’s John Mahama and Egypt’s Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

President Déby is the current chairman of the African Union. His country, Chad, has nominated its long serving Minister for Foreign Affairs Moussa Faki Mahamat for AUC chairperson.

The elections are scheduled for January 2017. Kenya will seek to strike a compromise with Chad.

Kenya and Chad enjoy warm and cordial relations though trade between the two countries is minimal with Kenya’s exports to Chad valued at Sh81,812,459, against imports from Chad at Sh115,399 in 2015.

Analysts believe the election will pick up momentum in January next year.

Travelling as a high-level special envoy, Ruto is delivering a message directly to heads of state to vote for Mohamed in January.

MK254 hii news ya lini? AU chairman ni Kagame kama sikosei. Yaani gharama zote halafu mnakosa, DRC haiwezi ku-support Kenya, forget that..

1academ, JK was nominated as an alternative. As a President, he can't vie. This election is a supremacy battle btn COMESA n SADC, n if u see Tanzania refuse to endorse Amina then be worried.
