British High Commissioner to Tanzania, Sarah Cooke said in Kilombero yesterday on a field visit to the factory that the anticipated expansion will allow cane farmers to increase their productions as more of the raw material will be needed to feed the expanded factory.

Cooke said the UK government is eager to see that investment at the factory stays intact while benefitting the majority of the people. “The UK government has participated in two projects in Kilombero district including the construction of a 67-kilometer road to Ifakara district, as well as the process of Certification of Customery Rights of Occupants concerning land ownership,” she noted.

She stressed that investments done to date at the Kilombero Sugar Company, which its partly owned by British investors, has already benefited the majority of Tanzanians in different ways including employment.
Briefing the British High Commissioner, Kilombero Sugar’s Managing Director, Guy Williams said the expansion project’s study is at a good stage and that they are expecting to sign a contract with a contractors after the government and the parent company of Kilombero Sugar, reach an agreement to proceed with the project.

“The total estimated Investment in such a project which will include expanding the sugar factory, new investment by surrounding small scale farmers in expanding their cane growing area and related infrastructure will amount to around U$300 million,” Williams said.

Williams further assured Kilombero cane farmers that if the project is approved by both the government and Illovo Sugar Africa on time, the expansion of the factory will be completed and start operations by June 2022.

“This will go hand in hand with President John Magufuli’s intention of having the country produce enough sugar for its own consumption requirements,” he added.
Presenting their challenges to HC Cooke, Kilombero cane farmers said among their major challenges include poor roads heading to farms but expressed their gratitude to Kilombero Sugar Company for increasing the number of agricultural extension officers who are helping to practice better crop husbandry practices.

The company’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Joseph Rugaimukamu said the expansion of the sugar factory will entice development in Kilombero district especially among cane farmers who include those from Kilosa as they will increase their earnings.

TARI eyeing increase of oil palm cultivation across the country

TANZANIA Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) plans to develop the oil palm crop in the areas it grows well – including Kyela District in Mbeya Region, Mkuranga and Bagamoyo districts in Coast Region, Tanga and Zanzibar so as to increase palm oil production in the country.

This was revealed by TARI director general, Dr Geoffrey Mkamilo during his visit in Kigoma Region to examine the production of better oil palm seeds following directives from the prime minister Kassim Majaliwa.
Dr Mkamilo said the regions in which researches were conducted have shown they are best suited for oil palm farming and therefore can help in palm oil production.

TARI - Kihinga director Dr Filson Kagimbo said they have come up with a strategy to revive the oil palm farming because the palms produce big quantity of oil per acre as compared to other oil producing crops such as sunflower.

He said Kigoma Region has huge opportunities in increasing palm oil production by using better seeds, adding that they are currently conducting research so that they scale up production of oil from 1.6 tonnes per hectare to 3 – 4 tonnes per hectare.

He said TARI’s three-year plan is to distribute 15 million seedlings, an average of five million seedlings per year, a step that will help reduce government’s cost to import palm oil.

Dr Mkamilo added: “If the plan works Tanzania can encourage neighbouring Kenya to import oil from us instead of importing 80 percent of its palm oil requirements from outside – including Rwanda and Sudan.

He said at present many oil palm trees are over 50 years old and others approaching 100 years, at this age their oil producing capacity goes down as compared to modern oil palm trees.

TARI Ag research manager - crops Dr Geoffrey Kajiru said what the institute is currently doing is to change farmers’ mindsets so that they abandon traditional seeds and use modern ‘tenera’ seeds with higher oil producing capacity.

Speaking in a special interview with this paper, TARI-Makutupora Director, Dr Corlen Massawe said the modern ant-pests seeds have been tried by farmers in various areas and showed promising results.

Massawe noted that some farmers have already started planting the modern seeds.
According to Dr Massawe, Dodoma Region is the country’s biggest producer of grapes cultivated in the districts of Bahi and Chamwino and Dodoma city. He said the institute has also distributed the seeds to farmers in other regions.

He said grapes production is fast growing – from 10,000 tonnes in 2016 to 15,000 tonnes in 2018, an average increase of 48 percent.
Dr Massawe said due to increasing grapes production in Dodoma Region some farmers have established small extraction plants, others are making wine and hard drinks.

The TARI-Makutupora Coordinator of Technology and Communications, Vidah Mahava said in the plan to develop grapes production in various areas of Dodoma region, they have been educating farmers including secondary and university students on the new technology of grapes seeds.

She said in collaboration with the Office of Dodoma Regional Commissioner they have mobilised farmers to start small extraction factories as well as assuring them of ready markets both locally and outside the country.
TARI Director General Dr Geoffrey Mkamilo said the aim of the institute is to develop and produce seeds for every crop grown in the country and already there are 18 centres that have been commissioned to produce seeds by using modern technology for better crop yields.

He said TARI has mobilised itself to ensure it implements President John Magufuli’s directives to produce seeds using modern technology so as to stop depending on foreign seeds that now stands at 70 percent.

JKT camp, two prisons focus on oil palm seeds
THREE public institutions have embarked in mass production of improved seedlings of oil palm, ‘Tenela’ in view of the government’s push to revive the palm oil crop for cooking oil production in Kigoma Region.

The public entities taking up massive production of the improved seedlings are the National Service Camp at Bulombora (JKT-Bulombora), Kwitanga and Ilagala prisons in Kigoma and Uvinza districts respectively.

“Tenela” seedlings produced by these institutions will be grown in their farms and distributed freely to residents in nearby villages to push up palm oil production following directives issued by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa during a tour of the region.
Speaking on the ongoing strategies, the Acting Commander of 821 JKT Bulombora, Capt Benitho Lubida said producing ‘Tenela’ seed is tied to its high oil yields that will reduce costs of importing cooking oil each year.

He said the production of seeds was being conducted in collaboration with the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), tasked by the government to oversee palm oil production.

Capt Lubida said for a start they have planted 19,600 seedlings while they continue to prepare more seedlings, with a 916 acre farm prepared for the purpose in response to the premier’s appeal.

In collaboration with TARI, Bulombora JKT are preparing 500,000 “Tenela” seedlings to cater for six districts and numerous villages close to the camp, he said.

The Chief Warden of Kwitanga Prison, Dominic Kazimile said the government wants to ensure that prisons become centres for production, and in this prison the focus is on growing high quality “Tenela” oil palm seedlings that yield big quantity of palm oil.

He said the prison aims to cultivate 6,000 acres and already they have prepared 400 acres in the first phase, while growing 10,795 seedlings and removing aged trees planted way back in 1968.

For his part, Chief Warden of Ilagala Prison in Uvinza District, ASP Mangole Mbaruk said they have received 10,000 seedlings from TARI and have prepared 200 acres for palm oil palm farming.

TARI Director Dr Geoffrey Mkamilo was pleased by Bulombora JKT and Prisons in responding the call from premier Majaliwa, and for keeping oil palm seedlings while preparing their farms for planting.

Speaking about JKT, Dr Mkamilo said there is a great opportunity due to proximity with Lake Tanganyika, noting that TARI was ready to keep the seedlings for other areas in need.

Research had already been conducted in other regions whose results show where oil palms can grow well, he stated.

TARI-Kihinga director Dr Filson Kagimbo, said they have come up with strategies to revive oil palm crop because oil palm yields more oil per acre compared to other oil yielding crops such as sunflower.

Speaking about oil palm production in Kigoma Region, the TARI director said research is being conducted to enhance palm oil production yields from 1.6 tons per hectare to 3 tons or up to 4 tons per hectare by using “Tenela” seeds.
