Mombasa port now has capacity of 2.1 million TEUs which is about 35 million tons and once berth 23 is completed by early next year the ports capacity will rise to 38 million tons.

Construction of the new Berth 22 is complete with the yards, office blocks and the gates undergoing final touches before the project is commissioned later this year. The new phase brings an additional 450,000 TEUs annually.

Capacity at the Port of Mombasa is set to increase to 2.1 million TEUs annually once phase two of the second container terminal becomes operational, increasing the port’s competitiveness in the region and along the northern transport corridor.

KPA has already procured new and modern equipment including the Ship-to Shore and Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes which are currently undergoing testing at the new berth.

This capacity expansion project will contribute to increased efficiency and fluidity at the port of Mombasa. Similarly, the new modern berth which has a quay length of 350m will be able to handle Panamax and post Panamax vessels of up 65 000 DWT.
